My partner, magic mushrooms and our holiday

Lm4065 · 10/12/2025 11:45

My partner micro doses magic mushrooms daily for mental health reasons (depression). I don’t have an issue with this.
however we are planning our first holiday. Nothing is booked yet but they have said they are planning to take some mushrooms for use there which makes sense but it hadn’t crossed my mind.
im not comfortable travelling with someone who is carrying something illegal. I don’t want to be implicated or get into trouble. I would lose my job.
my partner understands to a point but says this is not what the airport security are looking for and they won’t get caught.
I agree the risk is low however that’s not the point. They are asking me to take a big risk, and even if we don’t get caught I will be super stressed in the run up to the flight, during and whilst waiting for the case.
my partner is playing down the risk but this is not something I’m willing to compromise on.
I know my partner has travelled with friends when carrying these drugs in their bag and the friends have not had an issue with it.
does anyone have any advice Please .

Partner ..well at least your not married
What happens when you have children and he's of his face ,will he be able to care for them.
What happens when he no longer gets the hit from mushrooms and moves on to harder drugs .
But yeah ...I'd not be travelling with him

While I wouldn't want to be with someone who takes drugs at all let alone carries through the airport, you're being ridiculously OTT describing someone microdosing as "off their face".

Bloozie · 10/12/2025 15:01

I wouldn't travel with someone carrying Class A drugs. Not because I fear I'd lose my job - I don't think you would - but because the angst would be too much.

I don't judge anyone for microdosing mushrooms though - there's good evidence behind the efficacy.

Can they not purchase in whatever country you are going to?

How does a menopausal woman go about finding a drug dealer? Are there risks that what you get isn't safe? I wouldn't have the first clue how to find something like this out in middle age!

You don't need a dealer, you just need to learn where to pick them and how to ID them.

She grows her own shrooms now and dehydrates them but used to get it powdered from Amsterdam i believe.

Only thing stopping me is, similar to how I cant even smell Tequila without vomiting after a very drunken night in my youth, the last shroom trip I had wasn't particularly pleasant even though I know microdosing doesn't give any noticeable effect at all.

Thanks, are there different rules for different countries then?

In case it hasn’t been said before, some countries have incredibly harsh penalties for carrying drugs, up to and including the death penalty if carrying significant amounts. You are not being unreasonable to want him to take a holiday without carrying class A drugs with him.

BackToLurk · 10/12/2025 15:06

Could he check legislation for where he's going at them sent straight to the destination or buy over there?

Seriously?
Do you not think visiting Indonesia or Saudi Arabia might be somewhat different from visiting Finland or Iceland?

Gallowayan · 10/12/2025 15:09

Your partner is talking nonsense. You need to understand that magic mushrooms are a class A drug under UK law, with penalties of up to 7 years in prison

Whatever the laws are in the country you are going to, you as well as your partner, will still be smuggling a class A drug through UK customs.

3luckystars · 10/12/2025 13:59

I think ‘dried’ they are, but are ok if not dried.

You might need to check this, it’s a long time since I heard that.

NO! They have been Class A since the 60s, any processing of any kind makes them class A even picking them, the only time they are not class A is the spores or the unpicked mushroom,

SerendipityJane · 10/12/2025 15:12

Somnambule · 10/12/2025 15:01

You don't need a dealer, you just need to learn where to pick them and how to ID them.

In that case, given the number of non deaths from ingesting badly IDed fungi, the UK is hardly in the grip of a 'shroom epidemic.

They (apparently) grew in some woods opposite my 6th form.

I'll stick to home distilling for my edge of danger 😎

PInkyStarfish · 10/12/2025 15:20

Has he tried 5-htp which can be bought from places like Holland & Barrett, or high might be a better alternative in the week before and during the holiday, rather than risk the problem of getting caught with something illegal?

5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is a naturally occurring amino acid and a precursor to the neurotransmitter serotonin and the hormone melatonin, which help regulate mood, sleep, appetite, and pain sensation. It is commonly available as a dietary supplement derived from the seeds of the African plant Griffonia simplicifolia.
Potential Uses and Benefits
People use 5-HTP supplements to potentially increase serotonin levels in the brain, which may offer benefits for certain conditions.

  • Depression: Some studies suggest that 5-HTP may be as effective as some prescription antidepressants, especially when used in combination with other substances or for treatment-resistant cases. However, the evidence quality is limited, and more research is needed.
  • Sleep Disorders: By boosting melatonin production (the natural sleep hormone), 5-HTP may help improve sleep quality, reduce the time it takes to fall asleep, and increase REM sleep. This effect may be more prominent in poor sleepers.
  • Weight Management: 5-HTP may help with weight loss by increasing feelings of fullness and reducing appetite, leading to lower daily calorie and carbohydrate intake.
  • Fibromyalgia and Migraines: Low serotonin levels are associated with fibromyalgia and migraines. Early evidence suggests 5-HTP may help improve symptoms, including pain, morning stiffness, and the frequency/intensity of headaches.

I don't think you understand micro-dosing.

Where are you going?

Irrelevant. I wouldn't take anything illegal or dodgy through an airport. Doesn't your partner know how an airport works? Not just that OP but I would consider your life choices right now of dating someone who is risking a crimal record!.

Do you want kids with this man?

murasaki · 10/12/2025 15:23

Microdosing isn't going to get you out of your tree and make you a bad parent.

Being locked up for carrying class As through an airport would.

There is more than her anxiety to think about here. She would be implicated in smuggling a class A drug. She is aware of it so therefore it would be a joint enterprise.

rainbowsparkle28 · 10/12/2025 14:50

I am sorry but what are you doing with this absolute waste of space?! Grow some self respect and know your worth, end the relationship, and don’t even contemplate this in any way doing something so utterly stupid as bringing illegal substances into another country ffs. Anyone with even an ounce of common sense would tell you that.

Edited

What the actual gold plated fuck are you talking about

Aintgointogoa · 10/12/2025 15:25

@SpaceRaccoon ah yes we used to forage, there were plenty in my neck of the woods back then. Had some really lovely happy larks out in the country ! I wouldn't take them in an urban / city setting tho. Something about psilocybin absolutely impels you to be outdoors, grass beneath your feet etc. Well it does me anyway. Happy daze ! And oh my goodness, getting the giggles 🙃

Aintgointogoa · 10/12/2025 15:29

Oh and What's Up Docs on the Beeb covered this subject (microdosing) a while ago, it was interesting. Seemed to lean in more to the placebo effect. I haven't taken the supplements long enough to know if they do make a difference....

LittlePurpleTeapot · 10/12/2025 15:29

simplesimoneatspie · 10/12/2025 14:23

Well he is a druggy. Don’t pink it up any other way!

Get a grip, microdosing does not make someone a 'druggy' 😂

Weed and mushrooms, both natural and with many benefits are illegal because the Government can't patent them.

Nobody has ever died from either.

Meanwhile alcohol is available on any high street.
For an example in 2024 there were an estimated 21,971 deaths from alcohol.

whymadam · 10/12/2025 15:30

You'll be fine, unless there are drug sniffer dogs and then there could be issues. Travel separately maybe?

SerendipityJane · 10/12/2025 15:31

Microdosing was briefly a thing about 30 years ago. It was discussed in relation to schizophrena and alcoholism (DB subscribes to a lot of medical journals).

The thing that intrigued me most was the suggestion that a single dose can actually "cure" (or prevent from recurring) the condition. Like all you need is a slight "rewire" to set things straight.

However, as DB has said for years, it's a shame when cures are natural, as no one will spend money researching them.

JustMyView13 · 10/12/2025 15:31

Airport security absolutely look for this. That’s why they have sniffer dogs, here and abroad. A relative, who works with controlled drugs, always gets stopped & their phone swabbed because there’s traces from contact transfer at work on their device. Ofc the swabs show clear because it’s trace levels and it’s a legal drug, but you’re describing a whole different scenario.

OriginalUsername2 · 10/12/2025 15:32

You could both end up having your bums searched. A definite no from me!

beAsensible1 · 10/12/2025 15:33

Lm4065 · 10/12/2025 11:46

Thanks, are there different rules for different countries then?

yes. different countries have different level of severity.

some places its life in jail or death, some places its 5 - 10 years.

it could also depend on the amount and wether its trafficking with intent to supply.

i would book separately and with different bank accounts. different flights if you want the extra layer of safety.

no matter the country or its legality in the country, on all international flights it is illegal.

SerendipityJane · 10/12/2025 15:34

From memory, isn't the dose needed titrated in micrograms ? Or is that just LSD ?
