Which typically male interests/activities give you the ick?

Meant as a lighthearted thread, so hope nobody gets bent out of shape over this - also, I've added the disclaimer of 'typically' male to close off anyone taking umbrage with that... 😅

Dipped a toe back into OLD recently, and already feeling pretty exasperated with just how flipping dull a lot of men are. A lot of them that I've come across only seem to be interested in two things, football and going to the gym.

Maybe that's okay for some people, but these two things alone are enough to put me off. I hate football for a lot of reasons, namely the idiotic behaviour that a lot of football fans display, plus the fact that it's just so painfully boring to watch. I couldn't date a football fan, because being subjected to daily conversation about who was best at kicking a ball around would slowly drive me mad. Don't even get me started on fantasy football or 'accas'...

As for men who spend most their lives in the gym? Yawn. Nobody cares how many 'reps' you've done, or how tough 'leg day' was, Steve. Give me some proper intellectual stimulation, ffs!

Where are all the men who are interested in the arts, nature, books, photography, politics etc? Or even just sports that aren't as unbelievably boring as football? Or do they no longer exist?

So, tell me ladies. Am I alone here, or are there typical male interests that would really put you off a guy, no matter how attractive they might otherwise be?

'Or even knows what a heron is' 😂 that's my new bare minimum!

For me, motorsport is a no. Going to the gym is OK as long as they don't talk about it!

Edit: apologies I've lost the post that contained the amazing heron line

GingerPaste · 03/06/2025 21:46

50 year old blokes with their motorbikes. I can’t stand it!

Purplecatshopaholic · 03/06/2025 21:53

I would have said football, but my BF now loves it so I have got used to it being on the tv. Luckily he’s also very intelligent and talks about other things too!

Surely there can be no such man 😧how can anyone not know what a heron is? God I've just been put off dating even more

PorgyandBess · 03/06/2025 21:56

Gamers. Especially men that have a gaming chair. 🤡

I know someone who thought all waterfowl were ducks...geese, swans (they're just big white ducks aren't they?).

Don't underestimate people's lack of knowledge of nature!

Dontsayyouloveme · 03/06/2025 22:11

Guitar and singing esp when both together! Even more so when they think that by doing the odd local ’gig’ once every two or so months, that they’re going to be discovered and become famous…. At 56! 🤢

Ha! Gaming chairs say it all. Your view on them should be a first date question to save everyone time and expense

DontTouchRoach · 03/06/2025 22:20

My fanny clamps shut like a bulldog clip if a man is into rugby union. It’s unbelievably dull and its fan base in England is full of posh, ruddy-cheeked men with flabby lips and gilets.

A enthusiasm for Formula 1 is an instant turn-off. I just find everything associated with it tacky and naff.

I would also run a mile from any man who names Hunter S Thompson or Charles Bukowski as his favourite writer, or who says his favourite comedian is Bill Hicks. There’s nothing wrong with them, but men who wax lyrical about them are always dreadful.

Men whose favourite film is Goodfellas, anything by Tarantino or Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels. NO.

In stark contrast to the OP, I probably couldn’t have a relationship with a man who didn’t like football.

Ninkynonkpinkyponks · 03/06/2025 22:20

I don’t mind any sports really (except golf is bloody long!!) happy with a cyclist or running husband.

ICK for me is computer games. And spending every evening at the pub. Or gambling

Ifpicklesweretickles · 03/06/2025 22:22

Football is a major turn off, especially if not many other interests.

And although not stereotypically male that much gaming (shudders)

Oh god cryptocurrency, just shut up shut up before I get so bored my brain dribbles out of my ears. I don’t care, I don’t want to know, I will never understand it, and again I don’t care.

Definitely porn, bleugh. That’s most men though isn’t it.

No, probably not most

DontTouchRoach · 03/06/2025 22:36

Augarden · 03/06/2025 21:26

Interesting. I get that he might find those things boring but I can't imagine them taking over a woman's life like football sometimes does for men, but perhaps that's just my experience as a very casual basic yoga-enjoyer.

I don’t think it’s necessarily about it taking over someone’s life, though. Sometimes it’s just because people associate certain interests with certain types - obviously it’s stereotyping, but ‘icks’ are often irrational and just have to be accepted as something you can’t help.

DontTouchRoach · 03/06/2025 22:43

Ifpicklesweretickles · 03/06/2025 22:24

No, probably not most

Studies suggest that 75-90% of men and 55-60% of women use porn. So yes, most.

evtheria · 03/06/2025 22:45

As someone who grew up being really into comics and some anime, I’d be immediately, off the get-go, wary of a guy who was REALLY into anime/manga. An overwhelming amount of it is just gross… but you’d have to be hardcore to venture past the stuff that’s popular in the western world (eg Death Note).
Also: Anyone who spends time getting AI to generate imagery and believes they are an artist/creating art.

Other than that, flat-earthers (or is that more a belief than an interest?), and the “I’m-really-into-20th-century-memorabilia-and-by-that-I-mean-I’m-a-Neo-Nazi-look-at-my-collection-of-flags” I can’t think of many that would make me do an internal ugh…
We all have our dull or weird, or dull and weird interests. My DP loves listening to podcasts and audiobooks on modern history, I’d rather read a non-fiction book, pref over 300 pages long, based around ancient mythology. He loves football in that specific, very stereotypical blokey way, while I think the Premier League is a scam and can barely restrain myself from rolling my eyes whenever they’re discussing tactics on Talksport. He puts up with my unbridled, blind love for Tolkien’s work (the incessant quoting!), and inexplicable interest in watching Freedar.

I agree with every word. Maybe you and I should get married.

MidnightMeltdown · 03/06/2025 23:30

Marvel movies. I don’t understand why grown men in their 30s want to watch superhero films like teenage boys. What a load of rubbish. Sadly, every partner I’ve ever had has liked them 😬.

AsanteSana · 03/06/2025 23:53

Football, golf, rugby - in fact any sport
Gambling
Pub goers/drinkers
Gamers
Tattoo officianados - just yuck
Amateur radio hams
Cyclists
Sci fi fans
Car bores
Train spotters
Gym enthusiasts

Can think of many, many more, but that will do for now!

pinkglitter12 · 04/06/2025 00:01

Football, golf, pubs, gym, dogs

Oh this. Probably more than every sport because there's no upper limit on time- some men seem to stay up all night gaming- no way.

I dislike people who try to impose age restrictions on interests. If you enjoy marvel then why would you suddenly stop when you hit 30?

I’ve always loved fantasy (films and books). Are you suggesting I should have grown out of that now I’m in my 40s?

FlightCommanderPRJohnson · 04/06/2025 08:08

It's not the type of interest or hobby that would put me off, it's whether it dominates someone's life, interferes with doing things together and so on.

Cyclist hate makes me sad. Mountain biking is really really fun - if you like skiing or snowboarding, you’d probably enjoy. And road riding keeps you super fit (for longer mtb rides ). Cycling is way better than running for me (post pregnancy prolapses have ruled that out), plus it’s more interesting because you can go further and I love mountains! DH cycles too.

cycling is a great sport. There are some idiot cyclists just as there are idiot motorists. It’s not hard to be a considerate road user.

Yeah this, I don’t understand the cyclist hate we have in the U.K. when there’s a lot more idiot motorists. I never thought much about it till I met my now DH on OD and he enjoys it, not obsessively but likes getting out in the fresh air and good exercise and it’s not really any different from people who enjoy running and going to running clubs. I think it’s because there’s a lot of selfish car drivers who think the road belongs solely to them etc.

When I was online dating I was always turned off by the men holding up large fish, and yes probably painting warhammer figures! Also I do enjoy a bit of gaming but I wouldn’t have wanted to meet someone who was a huge gamer.

We're right here in the friend zone where you left us!

OK, I'll pass on the politics - winds me up too much - but, otherwise, I'm into all the calm, peaceful, gentle pursuits. My observation is that, while women like to complain about men being into football, gym, etc., they can't resist the (frankly, homogenised) tattooed, bearded, muscular, bombastic, over-confident alpha male types who are into those things.

I'd love to meet a woman who prefers early mornings to late nights, nature walks to nightclubs, art galleries to rugby matches, etc. Where are they?
