Which typically male interests/activities give you the ick?

Meant as a lighthearted thread, so hope nobody gets bent out of shape over this - also, I've added the disclaimer of 'typically' male to close off anyone taking umbrage with that... 😅

Dipped a toe back into OLD recently, and already feeling pretty exasperated with just how flipping dull a lot of men are. A lot of them that I've come across only seem to be interested in two things, football and going to the gym.

Maybe that's okay for some people, but these two things alone are enough to put me off. I hate football for a lot of reasons, namely the idiotic behaviour that a lot of football fans display, plus the fact that it's just so painfully boring to watch. I couldn't date a football fan, because being subjected to daily conversation about who was best at kicking a ball around would slowly drive me mad. Don't even get me started on fantasy football or 'accas'...

As for men who spend most their lives in the gym? Yawn. Nobody cares how many 'reps' you've done, or how tough 'leg day' was, Steve. Give me some proper intellectual stimulation, ffs!

Where are all the men who are interested in the arts, nature, books, photography, politics etc? Or even just sports that aren't as unbelievably boring as football? Or do they no longer exist?

So, tell me ladies. Am I alone here, or are there typical male interests that would really put you off a guy, no matter how attractive they might otherwise be?

How strange, my post was instantly hidden - not sure it was that controversial 😭

Did you mention certain types of financial transactions with a C? Presume they’re hidden in case its spam/scam.

Meadowfinch · 03/06/2025 19:01

I briefly dated someone whose main interest was vintage Porsches.

It took me two weeks to lose the will to live. 😁 Definitely not my thing.

Bimblebombles · 03/06/2025 19:01

Gaming and going to the pub regularly as a hobby,

Lifelover16 · 03/06/2025 19:01

Anything which involves killing animals for “sport” - eg hunting, shooting, fishing

NCtoavoidsniggering · 03/06/2025 19:01

Clearly I need to change my OLD profile to delete cycling 😪

Jux · 03/06/2025 19:02

The Biscuit Game is one of the most revolting ideas I have come across yet - I’m 67.🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

Yes! The C-word of bros
instant turn off 😁

Football
Cycling
Porn

The men in the family I was born into did none of those (well, if they like a bit of porn, I never found out). My partners have been into all of them.

Nothing gives me the ick faster than seeing scrawny, middle aged legs in lycra.

ObliviousCoalmine · 03/06/2025 19:07

Carp fishing.

WhatterySquash · 03/06/2025 19:11

Oh god cryptocurrency, just shut up shut up before I get so bored my brain dribbles out of my ears. I don’t care, I don’t want to know, I will never understand it, and again I don’t care.

Definitely porn, bleugh. That’s most men though isn’t it.

TheChosenTwo · 03/06/2025 19:12

I think the 2 things that stand out for me would be a gamer and a gambler.
I hate football but Dh and ds are into it, basically it means that pretty much every Saturday for months on end I have a whole day to myself and after 2 decades of child rearing it’s wonderfully freeing 😂
I also couldn’t date a man who wore any kind of novelty/cartoon/comic/band tshirt - instant no thanks for me.
I like going to the gym but not to the extent that anyone outside my family knows about it because it’s not a hobby for me, just something I know is good for me and keeps my body ticking over. I don’t think I’d be initially attracted to a man who was proud of spending hours a day in the gym 7 days a week unless it was for some kind of rehabilitation!

Blanca87 · 03/06/2025 19:18

I remember reading a thread last year where someone was moaning about their DH’s hobby and how much it took up of his time. She later revealed that he was a morris dancer. The thought of this women not only wanting to shag a morris dancer but married one lives rent free in my head. And will forever more.

RadiovTV · 03/06/2025 19:21

Discounting someone just because they’re a football fan might mean you’re missing out on someone who is also interested in all the other things you listed

I think, for me though, the football would cancel everything else out.

BlueEyedBogWitch · 03/06/2025 19:31

Am Dram.

I hate football obsessed men. Just something about a load of grown men chanting and acting like teenage thugs. Instant ick

BitOutOfPractice · 03/06/2025 19:37

I love football. I love the gym. Also love art, theatre, politics, film. It’s possible to have more than one side.

Having that, I agree most men I know are much more one dimensional than most of the women I know.

When I was doing OLD it seemed to be fishing and motorbikes. Yawn.

wheelwild · 03/06/2025 19:39

Grown men on skateboards doing flips and tricks….. gross

museumum · 03/06/2025 19:41

I don’t particularly like football or the gym but I wouldn’t mind a partner who liked them. But if it was the only hobbies mentioned on their OLD then that’s a definite no from me as they would not be a common interest or topic of conversation and really I’d expect a profile to at least try to list things we might connect over. I’d guess very few women would list football and the gym as their top two interests - even women who do enjoy both.

ChaToilLeam · 03/06/2025 19:41

Any kind of obsessive interest. I don't mind if a guy is into sports, or fishing, or whatever, as long as I'm not expected to watch or come along if I don't want to.

My DP likes military history, which is an interest of mine too, and rugby, which is not, and camping, which is absolute anathema and he gets sent off on his own to do that.

TheBlackfingernail · 03/06/2025 19:42

PLAYING THE GUITAR.

This maybe because of the type of man that gives me the ick rather than the actual acoustic guitar playing.I mean if someone could play like Pepe Romero it maybe different but this is just mediocre repulsion.

It's usually older middle class men with their stone washed jeans, suede shoes no socks, who think they are really something and want to play in the local pub, when friends are round, every opoportunity. No we don't want to hear it. No it's not as good as you think it is.

Usually accompannied by long dirty fingernails on one hand to pluck with. Just no.

Also any kind of computer gaming. Guitar worse though.

WonderingWanda · 03/06/2025 19:45

There is nothing that makes me want to drown myself more than when dh says "Let's make a spreadsheet".

Knew that cycling would be the no.1 hate here. Whereas I would be delighted to find myself a cyclist, if I was single and not married to a man who loves cricket, politics and nature, not so much the arts.

If I was to go OLD now, football would definitely be a turn off. Also military memorabilia and history. I am now bored of politics, so would scratch that too. And wine snobbery - I like a glass of two, but don't want to debate the merits of every sip.

I have a cyclist who is an amazing Dad and whilst he has cycled a lot his whole life (not a trendy newcomer) has not been able to ride his bike much since he's had kids because he is too busy looking after his toddler and pre-schooler. We used to cycle together a lot; at home and on holiday, up mountains etc. He also has great thighs.

I dated a French man once who sang to me (accompanied by himself on the guitar), I was 20 and he was beautiful but I couldn't get away fast enough.

MoominMai · 03/06/2025 19:56

Have to say, the primary thing that if this interest isn’t there that gives me the ick only really is an absence of interest in politics/understanding of basic economic terms and concepts including e.g. meaning of the price cap. So my ex was very handsome and made out he watched the news regularly but it was impossible to get any sort of debate going on topical issues or even his opinion eg the recently altered price cap. I broke up with over something more serious but when I thought he was the one I did wonder how much a pretty face could make up for zero engagement or interest in current affairs - and I’m not talking deep dives either just sort of a superficial awareness but enough to ensure you’re making relatively informed choices in your life!
