His bathroom was so disgusting, I can't believe he didn't clean it before either came round

I've been seeing this guy for a month, he seemed pretty sorted, good job, intelligent etc. BUT went round to his house last night for the first time and I was shocked at the state of his bathroom, he was off yesterday and knew I was coming round a few days in advance so he easily could have cleaned it. I don't want to go into detail as it's disgusting, but hair all over the floor, and the toilet was awful.
I feel a bit sick thinking about it and I didn't even want to go in there to use the toilet.
WTAF?
How could he go into his bathroom and think it was ok to let a potential date go into that, wasn't he embarrassed, obviously not!
He wants to meet again but it's kind of put me off and I definitely would dread using that bathroom again.
Would this put anyone else off?

'No thank you. I liked you but the state of your bathroom repulsed me and I realised we're not compatible. Take care'

And block.

Yes to this.

Should also say that one of my first boyfriends lived in an all male houseshare (6 of them)...I've never forgotten that bathroom!

Why are there so many men who seem to overlook this very necessary part of life i.e. cleaning their bottoms, cleaning the places their bottoms have been...toilets, pants, bed sheets etc...?

Because that's what women are for, duh.

I wouldn't stop dating him just because his bathroom was gross. If the whole house was gross and he was gross - that's another matter.
I'm not sure my DP would think to clean the bathroom for a date tbh... but he would make me dinner in a nice, clean kitchen!

It's quite likely he thinks the bathroom WAS clean and that it's sometimes even worse. But I think I agree that I would actually give him a chance to clean it.

Baconking · 06/02/2025 15:58

Did you go to his bedroom? Probably not changed the sheets in months either. 😷

I knew a {male} floor fitter and he said the amount of smelly pissy carpets he had to remove from bathrooms was immense.

Carpets in bathrooms and lavatories are such a no no.

From the sound of it you are probably right, sheets all stained and crusty where he has been dreaming of his date with the OP 😀

I had a house share once and one of the men had left his bedroom door ajar.. it was like a Turin Shroud of grease- really rank.

Brooomhilda · 06/02/2025 16:01

I had an ex who had a bathroom that was so awful. Mushrooms growing on shower basin. Blackened toilet bowl from compacted stains. I bleached the life out of the place before I used it and he was actually annoyed at me. That should have been a red flag.....

teentantrums · 06/02/2025 14:54

To be fair that might be water stains. We used to have a toilet with a slow leak from the cistern and it does leave brown stains - even if the toilet is cleaned regularly.

Yes agree with this. I’ve used very clean bathrooms in old houses where the bath has had rust staining from the taps, and the loo has been marked as well.

ginasevern · 06/02/2025 16:04

I hope you ate dinner before you saw the bathroom. I'd have been gagging on every mouthful.

He HAD a chance to clean it. He knew she was coming over.

Come on now! Any grown adult cleans gross mess before any guest visits. Let alone a potential partner!

Can we stop treating men like they don't know what to do. It's deliberate! He doesn't give a shit, at best. At worst it was to test to see if she would tolerate it.

Let's not baby men. It's misandrest to suggest they don't know basic hygiene or social norms without a woman explaining it to them. This guys just a prick.

I have a friend whose bathroom is immaculate, she scrubs the shower corners and runners with a toothbrush and viakal but the rest of her house is rather cluttered and un hoovered..I agree with you, a grotty bathroom is truly gross.

Hair all over the floor...Does he have a dog?

My house is cluttered and often unhoovered but my loo is always clean.

Oh my god, imagine having the job of pulling out piss (etc.) stained bathroom carpets! Noooooo!
(I've done it once, when we moved in here...it'd been around that loo for about 25 years 😭Was a very stinky van trip to the tip!)

GoldenLegend · 06/02/2025 16:08

maybe he was hoping you would feel sorry for him and clean it

😂

Allmarbleslost · 06/02/2025 16:09

That would be a hell no from me. Run a mile.

Wouldn't be the craziest bloody thing I've heard about a man's expectations!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/02/2025 16:10

I can just imagine him, a couple of years down the line. 'You want the toilet cleaned? Well, YOU clean it then!' If they don't notice how minging it is now, then they won't notice further into the relationship and all the scrubbing of his skids off the loo will be down to you...

KnottyKnitting · 06/02/2025 16:11

Bleugh! Perhaps he was hoping you might get the marigolds on seeing as he cooked you a meal?

Bin him- it won't get any better.

I'm not 'babying' men. I just know that some people don't see mess in the same way. And this can include women too. I did say in another post that this might actually be his slightly cleaned version and that it might be even worse when he's alone, but I'd still give him a chance to clean it up. I don't like dirty bathrooms, but I don't think it's what makes a person good or bad and if he can fix it, problem solved.

Total deal-breaker. Stop seeing him, and tell him why.

I agree.

We need to stop pussy-footing around manky men.

babasaclover · 06/02/2025 16:14

@oakleaffy oh hod so gross and so true!!!!

I just cannot imagine not washing my hands. So vile that people don't, was in work yesterday and woman came out of cubicle and straight out the door with her head in her own too. Professional office with thousands in and she and others just spreading the germs all around 🤮🤮🤮

Yes, you can usually recognise this though. Yellowed enamel, etc.

I also can't get my grout clean and there's an area between both shower doors that is disgusting. I'm not taking the doors off so I guess there's nothing I can do about it.

Maybe she was doing something like changing her clothes in the cubicle and no need to wash hands. Did you hear the flush?
