Just this, really, and why or why not?

I'm glad to see so many people saying they'd be put off. Saves all the nice guys that happens to have tattoos for the rest of us that don't have sticks up our bums. If all I've got to worry about when I'm old is that my boyfriend/husband's tattoos look a bit faded and distorted then I think I'll be doing okay 👍. But in all honesty have your preference but it's a bit close minded to call them chavvy/rough etc.

wizzywig · 13/10/2024 14:29

I'm not into tattoos at all, the ones that make me cringe inside are ones on the face, sayings like 'what doesn't kill you makes you stronger ' . You just know they are the kind of person who has catalogue shopping debts, and their holidays are about making memories

Eviebeans · 13/10/2024 14:30

In general I like them- good quality, thoughtful designs skilfully executed not those that look as if you’ve let your drunken friend loose with the felt tips

Day99 · 13/10/2024 14:31

Yes if they're on face, neck or fingers. Anywhere else, depends. I don't find them attractive as such.

Devilsmommy · 13/10/2024 14:31

TheCultureHusks · 13/10/2024 14:27

But I maintain that they are just so everywhere that you can’t associate them with any class or outlook or even style really any more.

I agree with your view. Its one homogeneous grouped thing now. Not like back in the day

Mirabai · 13/10/2024 14:34

Yes I hate them. They make people look skeezy.

KatieL5 · 13/10/2024 14:34

I absolutely loathe tattoos on men and women. I can’t understand what goes through people’s minds when they decide to have one.

Nothatgingerpirate · 13/10/2024 14:37

Probably not, there are other things that would.
Also, I would be looking for a bit of fun, not a long term/living together relationship.

It would entirely depend on the quality. Shitty Love Island type done to get max coverage ASAP cause it's "fashionable", done by your mate or the local place - yes that would put me off.

Beautifully created pieces of art, obtained by researching styles, artists, and potentially travelling to find the right artist for the style you want? That would float my boat.

Sadly round here it's predominantly the first type which is a good reason that I remain resolutely single.

What are love island type tattoos?

OP, wouldn't bother me. DH has just had his third and I've got 7 and getting my 8th next week.

SaltySeaMaiden · 13/10/2024 14:39

Yes. Just don't like them, whatever they are.

usernother · 13/10/2024 14:40

Lots of tattoos would put me off a bit. A face and or neck tattoo would totally put me off.

Hunnymonster1 · 13/10/2024 14:42

No because I am not judgemental and take people for who they are

Do you think it’s ‘a bit close-minded’ to refer to those who’d be put off by tattoos as having sticks up their bums?

Carouselfish · 13/10/2024 14:45

If he had rubbish ones that meant nothing and/or were badly done, yes. I'd consider that a sign of impulsively and bad prioritising. If you're getting tattoos to live with all your life, you dont get silly ones or be a cheapskate about it.

SwedishEdith · 13/10/2024 14:46

I'm not attracted to them all but if they had a small one somewhere discreet, I could cope. But if they had loads, I suspect they'd be attracted to a partner who looked the same. I hate all the language around tattoos - "ink" and "plain skin". They're so ubiquitous now but, fortunately, I'm old enough that I doubt I'll ever need to angst about this.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 13/10/2024 14:46

No I love to see fit men's forearms covered in detailed, colourful tattoos. Dh does have tattoos but they're not visible until he's undressed.

Heyyosu · 13/10/2024 14:47

Face - yes
Neck - yes
Hands - yes
legs - yes
Football teams - yes
mum and dad - Yes
ex - yes

Well done art on arms or Back - no

EducatingArti · 13/10/2024 14:47

I think for me it would totally depend on the style of tattoo, the placement and the amount of skin covered. I think that I'd be fine with well done designs that have been chosen to be really meaningful to the wearer, don't cover too much skin and can be covered by clothing for formal occasions.

Having said all of that, I'd be way more interested in a person's character and personality so could probably totally fall for the "right" person, even if they had full sleeve tatts.

TheHotelInspectorsPocket · 13/10/2024 14:51

Yes I detest tattoos and find them a real turn off. Not for me at all.

2Old2Tango · 13/10/2024 14:53

These types of tattoos I think are ingenious- where someone has had something done to complement a birthmark or disability.

Tattoos? As attractive as false teeth.

ByTealShaker · 13/10/2024 14:55

I don’t have any and won’t get any, but DH has a few large pieces. All pretty tasteful. All hidden under work clothes. I would not go in for facial or behind the ear tats, nor ones that are people names or portraits. Or poorly thought out ones.

Arlanymor · 13/10/2024 14:57

All of the comments on here about people being unintelligent/cheap/mentally unwell or challenged because they choose to have tattoos is mind blowing.

Tattoos have been a part of many cultures for literally thousands of years and are often indigenous. Take mine for example… I have one on my hand which apparently is a hanging offence according to some of you (photo attached of the day I had it done, hand poked by the way) which is the oldest Neolithic symbol ever found on earth, the triskele - a complex, ancient Celtic symbol. There is a gorgeous example in St Fagans (yes people with tattoos go to museums believe it or not) of an Iron Age plaque found Anglesey (also attached).

All of mine are connected to my cultural identity and none of mine are fading because most people with tattoos keep theirs topped up and maintained. I also speak four languages and have two degrees, but yes clearly I am stupid and chavvy. Honestly the judgement here is insane.

Still lots of jobs state no visible tattoos and it's perfectly legal to not employ someone with a tattoo. I wouldn't want to partner with someone who valued their appearance so highly that they would jeopardise their employment prospects

CMOTDibbler · 13/10/2024 15:00

I love tattoos and always have - but I hate badly done ones, ones with no story or just chosen off the wall, and where there is no cohesion or art to it. So its a yes and no for me
