Husband doesn't want me to let my hair go grey when I'm older

I am in my 30s. I was commenting to my husband about some aunts, in their late 60s and early 70s, who have gone fully grey. I think their grey hair looks great on them and they look really stylish. They wear colourful clothes that go well with grey.

I told my husband this, and said 'i hope I look like that when I'm older'.

Then he said he doesn't want me to go grey in my 70s and thinks i should dye it. I said he can't stop me. Then he said if I went fully grey, he wouldn't be happy about it.

How many husbands would object to their wife going grey in her 70s?

Tough on him...

Lavenderosa · 25/01/2024 23:56

Is he going to dye his hair if he goes grey?

SnackyOnassis · 25/01/2024 23:56

What are his plans for his hair when he's in his 70s?!!

Grimchmas · 25/01/2024 23:56

That's fucking weird of him.

SamW98 · 25/01/2024 23:56

Maybe tell him he’s not allowed to go bald then

SwedishEdith · 25/01/2024 23:56

Tell him you don't want him to lose his.

vodkaredbullgirl · 25/01/2024 23:56

I'm not with anyone and can do what I want. You do what you want to do and if it's going grey go for it.

TheBeesKnee · 25/01/2024 23:57

Bold of him to presume he's going to live long enough to see that.

PickAChew · 25/01/2024 23:57

Tell him you'll colour your hair in your 70s if he also has a full head of coloured hair.

Mumoftwo1312 · 25/01/2024 23:57

He'll change his mind by then. We are mostly wired to find our current age group attractive. In his 30s, he doesn't find grey hair attractive but it'll make sense when he's 60/70

CreateHope · 25/01/2024 23:58

I want grey in my 40s 😄. Luckily my husband is not a prick and understands that this is completely normal and I’m still gorgeous, just a new look gorgeous 😄

CuriousityKilledThePussy · 25/01/2024 23:58

Im early 50s and letting my grey grow in. He would hate me. Luckily I don't care what men think women should do 😂

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 25/01/2024 23:58

Tell him you're going to dye it purple.

Or just tell him to stop being a twat.

PamelaParis · 25/01/2024 23:59

Mystic Pam says with that attitude you'll be divorced well before then so it's not something he'll have to worry about. Wink

NotMarriedToAHouse · 25/01/2024 23:59

As long as he is prepared to do the same, right? And he's not allowed to go bald or develop that middle age belly.

darkmodeera · 25/01/2024 23:59

Tell him you don't want him to turn into a grumpy, judgemental prick as he gets older.

Meanwhile, warn him that you may have gone off him by then, because controlling behaviour isn't attractive at any age.

thistimelastweek · 26/01/2024 00:00

Gosh, when we were in our 30s we were just hoping we'd live that long.

We did and we've got grey hair. Neither cares.

Throwawayaccountonaccountofthis · 26/01/2024 00:01

Is he controlling in other ways?
If this isn’t a wind up, then he sounds like an arse.

ComfortableAtLastTookLongEnough · 26/01/2024 00:02

I was fully grey by 52, I use purple shampoo every day so I always have a purple hue to it. I am now 59 have a funky haircut reminiscent of Phil Oakley.

If I want to make a statement I leave it in for ten minutes and everyone comments, even my butcher. 😂

Tell your DH you have full autonomy of your body and that the last you checked you were not living in the US under the tyranny of the republicans.

God that has made me so angry.

Oh give over, most 30 something's are past the point of having no concept of object permanence and understand the idea that their partner isn't going to look 30 forever.

iutiut · 26/01/2024 00:03

My DH is the opposite, he told me many times to stop dyeing my hair and let it go grey naturally.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 26/01/2024 00:07

I'm in my fifties and I do dye my hair because I'm not quite ready for the grey just yet. I presume my DH must have noticed but he has had the good sense not to pass comment.

Sedgwick · 26/01/2024 00:10

I am 56 and my dark brown hair has wiry white and grey hairs, maybe 10%, anyway it’s noticeable. I asked DH if he had any views on my dying it or not. I would rather not as I am low maintenance no makeup person mostly. I only asked him as the last 5 years have been tough (zero libido, flooding periods every two weeks etc). I am out of it now and feeling much better but he has been patient and supportive throughout so dying my hair if it matters to him seemed like a small thing. Anyway (sorry this is long), he said sweetheart I am mostly bald now, you do whatever you like you are gorgeous either way. I am not remotely gorgeous haha.

You are in your 30s, guessing your DH is same, probably when you are older this stuff really won’t be an issue as he will have matured. I wouldn’t worry about it. Probably my DH would have felt the same when we were in our 30s. If he is otherwise a considerate husband I wouldn’t give it another thought. Obviously it’s your choice what you do with your hair.

Passingthethyme · 26/01/2024 00:11

I'm sure most men wouldn't want their partners going grey ... or cutting their hair too short. They just don't tell you
