Husband doesn't like touching a dish cloth

My husband doesn't like to use a dish cloth. He seems to find them gross.

I have bought good ones and have asked if he's happy to use them. He says yes, but then hardly ever does.

When it's my husband's turn to clear up after dinner, he uses kitchen roll and those disposable wipes from packets to clean surfaces.

We didn't live together before we got married and I never realised.

AIBU to find this a bit of a turn-off? I actually find it quite unattractive when I see him getting the disposable wipes out!

Get biodegradable wipes and don't worry about it

Spencer0220 · 17/11/2023 03:22

Are you sure he just doesn't know how to run a home?

DH (despite living alone for 3 years before meeting me) was absolutely fucking clueless about how to do things.

It's taken a lot of work from me (and some tips from my mum) and finally he can do anything needed.

Lizzieregina · 17/11/2023 03:23

He might have sensory issues.

I do use them, but I’m not a big fan of dish cloths myself. There are times when I hate touching them!

Mummymummy89 · 17/11/2023 03:28

He is NBU, dishcloths are unhygienic (unless you stick them in the wash after each use) and I find them so disgusting.

Get these instead, they can be washed in the dishwasher.

Is it microfiber? Some cloths will cling to the skin in the most disgusting way. It's just horrible. I can't touch those unless I'm wearing rubber gloves.

Are they any good compared to scrubby sponges?

CherryMyBrandy · 17/11/2023 03:38

I use dishcloths but change them daily. Some people's dishcloths are absolutely minging (I bleached my neighbour's when I had to go into to feed their cat, it was brown and absolutely stank 🤮. I didn't want to touch it let alone use it on their sides (presumabiy they do but couldn't bring myself to). Gross.

SirenSays · 17/11/2023 03:40

I'm with your DH I don't like them either.

Yeah way better at removing stuck on bits! And works out cheaper in the long run as you reuse them

Can you wipe down the work surfaces with this?

Ponderingwindow · 17/11/2023 04:05

I won’t reuse a dishcloth. I have to grab a fresh one every session and then they get washed on extra hot.

i spent my whole childhood being revolted by the dishcloth drying and being reused at the kitchen sink. That slimy rag just turns my stomach. The smell, the feel. It is not a way to get dishes clean.

now I am willing to admit that it’s possible there was nothing wrong with my parents dishcloth. I have ASD. It might be a sensory thing.

I still refuse to have one drying by my sink. I also won’t buy and throw away kitchen roll on principle so I own about 100 dish cloths and a giant hamper with big holes so they can dry as I throw them in. When I have a full laundry load I wash them on an extra hot cycle.

Copperoliverbear · 17/11/2023 04:24

He's probably got OCDs about certain things, I have lots of things I don't like.
I think it's great he gets the wipes and kitchen roll out, much more hygienic, than wiping the side with the dishcloth you've wiped everything else with.
There's probably things he doesn't like about you too.

GreyCarpet · 17/11/2023 04:25

Yeah, I'm with your husband. Dishcloths are vile.

I use those big flat sponges for doing the sides and they get put in the wash at the end of each day.

Copperoliverbear · 17/11/2023 04:29

Also he could be much worse, imagine if he was the sort of husband who sat on the sofa, while you tidied up every day

fridaynight1 · 17/11/2023 04:37

No I don’t like dishcloths either, they give me the ick. They are smelly, soggy germ incubators. Most pots and pans go in the dishwasher but for the rest , I use a thin sponge and throw it away after I’ve used it. Worktops get wiped with disposable antibacterial wipes.

DiscoBeat · 17/11/2023 04:41

Worktops get wiped with disposable antibacterial wipes.

You must get through a huge amount just in one day. Terrible for the environment.

Antibacterial anything is totally over the top in a normal household. Hot water and a few drops of dishwashing liquid is completely sufficient unless you're planning on breeding multi-resistant bacteria

Mummyoflittledragon · 17/11/2023 03:58

Can you wipe down the work surfaces with this?

You can but tbf as they leave the surface quite wet so you need to finish with a paper towel. My dh uses a paper towel. I mostly use these thingies for washing up or cleaning the hob. For wiping surfaces I will sometimes use a fresh cloth but ours are strictly single use before going in the washing machine, because I'm like op's dh, a used wet dishcloth gives me the shudders, even makes me gag

These are hopeless for wiping down and leaving surfaces clean, which is the only thing I use dishcloths for.

Aikko · 17/11/2023 08:10

Dishcloths are unhygienic, so I'm with your partner on this one.

Baconking · 17/11/2023 08:17

I don't like them either. We use kitchen towel & antibacterial spray.
Occasionally a scrubby sponge if needing to move a stubborn stain but there is rarely visual dirt on my surfaces

GreyCarpet · 17/11/2023 08:22

A rare, "Your husband is right!" fhread 😁

BooBooBaloo · 17/11/2023 08:26

Definitely team husband here. Dishcloths are gross

Tistheseasontobejollytrala · 17/11/2023 08:28

But they are not for doing the dishes! A scrubby sponge is needed for that. The dishcloth or Microfibre cloth is just for wiping down surfaces. I also get a fresh one out every day. They are not minging in my house.

Westfacing · 17/11/2023 08:33

I don't use dishcloths - instead use a roll of J-cloth type thingies, tearing off two at a time which gives reasonable bulk. Rinse them out then hang over tap to dry and throw away as and when
