Husband doesn't like touching a dish cloth

My husband doesn't like to use a dish cloth. He seems to find them gross.

I have bought good ones and have asked if he's happy to use them. He says yes, but then hardly ever does.

When it's my husband's turn to clear up after dinner, he uses kitchen roll and those disposable wipes from packets to clean surfaces.

We didn't live together before we got married and I never realised.

AIBU to find this a bit of a turn-off? I actually find it quite unattractive when I see him getting the disposable wipes out!

[Not read the thread] I feel the same as your husband. I always wear rubber gloves to use a cloth, I find this helps a lot. I also have a lot of cotton cloths and a lidded caddy in the kitchen (cotton because you can wash it at high temperatures); I dump the used cloths in the caddy until I have enough to put a very hot wash on (70 degrees+).

This way I never have gross cloths hanging around and I'm not using wipes which are bad for the environment.

But yes, he should definitely try rubber gloves as well.

Oh and I have an over-cabinet rail thing to hang cloths on between use so they're not festering on the side of the sink any more. If they hang flat/unfolded rather than being bunched up they dry quickly and don't build up grossness. This also helps a lot.

Don't hang them on the rail of the oven, though, that's a fire hazard.

disappearingfish · 18/11/2023 07:13

I don't like touching them so I use rubber gloves.

FoxClocks · 18/11/2023 07:32

I'd rather use a cloth as I think disposable things are bad for the environment but I also have trouble getting in a good routine with keeping the cloths clean. I always end up with a minging one and resort to the paper towels.

madeinmanc · 18/11/2023 07:34

Something's confusing me here, I thought the OP meant a cloth for wiping the counter etc. but "dish cloth" sounds like something for washing up which I would find really weird.

purplehairtomorrow · 18/11/2023 07:36

I don't like them either! I usually leave mine overnight in water with a bit of bleach but even then I think I prefer kitchen towel and spray bleach. I totally get why your DH doesn't like them!

Is it microfiber? Some cloths will cling to the skin in the most disgusting way. It's just horrible. I can't touch those unless I'm wearing rubber gloves.

So true, I hate microfibre cloths as I've got dry skin and they feel awful against the skin. Also I'm the same with kitchen towel because I too find dishcloths 🤢

  • *A cloth is the old fashioned way for washing everything, ideally you knitted your own from a slightly rough yarn so it's a bit scrubby.

Worktops get wiped with disposable antibacterial wipes.

You must get through a huge amount just in one day. Terrible for the environment.

Just awful. I can't believe people are willing to trash the environment like this.

Mariposista · 18/11/2023 08:01

I hate them too!
I clean dishes using a scrubbing sponge or a brush on a stick and wipe the surfaces with spray and kitchen roll. Hate wipes though because of their effect on the environment

WatchOutMissMarpleIsAbout · 18/11/2023 08:02

I loathe dishcloths with a vengeance. Especially In other people’s houses as I don’t know how often they’ve been washed. Yuck.

Your dh is right.

AuContraire · 18/11/2023 08:14

Count yourself lucky, all of you.

My DH cleans up spilt tomato soup/ coffee/milk/curry sauce etc with a tea towel, then leaves it on the shelf in a ball.

madeinmanc · 18/11/2023 08:48

Oh, @AuContraire ! 🙁😁

WhoWants2Know · 18/11/2023 08:52

I would have to wear gloves to touch the dishcloth. But I wear gloves to wash up anyway.

rileynexttime · 18/11/2023 10:37

And @Twillow ,if you're around ,do you ( or anyone else ) know what J cloths are made of ?These are my preferred cloth ,thin ,robust ,washable .Google isn't helping me so I suppose they must be at least partly synthetic and shedding plastic .

Sillysoppysentimental · 18/11/2023 10:43

Buy him some rubber gloves.. I always wear them when doing any wiping down/ cleaning in the kitchen.. even to load the dishwasher.. l take a pair on holiday too ( always have a villa). My cloths are washed every day and l use 4 a day.. l actually use face cloths in the kitchen.. white ones that can be bleached.. l can assure you he is normal with a bit of OCD .. but most of us are.

Abbyant · 18/11/2023 11:22

I can’t stand dish clothes they get wet and slimy, I use spray and kitchen roll to wipe down surfaces. So I’m on your husbands side but also what does it matter as long as he’s actually cleaning up.

paddlinglikecrazy · 18/11/2023 11:37

I use silicone scrubber for pans then it goes in the dishwasher and kitchen roll and spray for counter tops.
Don’t own a dishcloth I think they’re gross too.

zeibesaffron · 18/11/2023 13:10

I am with your husband on this!! we have them but each one is used for one day only.

Lochness1975 · 18/11/2023 13:30

Team husband on this one!

eurochick · 18/11/2023 14:06

Team husband too. We use a sponge to wash dishes and kitchen roll to wipe surfaces.

MadMumOfTwoHorrors · 18/11/2023 18:23

I’m not mad keen on dish cloths either, but I do have a microfibre one. I’ve never used it to wash dishes as we use a dish brush for anything that won’t go in the dishwasher, but it is there just for wiping the sides down. I put it in the dishwasher when I run it to keep it from getting smelly and then leave it hung over the drainer to dry, and it seems to work really well. We do rinse all our dishes before they go in, though, so this might not work so well if there are bits of food swimming around in the dishwasher too.
My hatred of dish cloths goes back to those stringy white ones that sat in a wet heap on the side of the sink when I was a kid, slowly getting smelly, grey and slimy over time, then every so often they’d get put in a big bucket of bleachy water to clean them. Urrgggh - gives me the ick just thinking about it.

Tisfortired · 18/11/2023 18:27

Agree hate dishcloths 🤢 we use dish sponges for washing up and they get changed weekly, and a micro fibre cloth for wiping the sides which gets chucked in the wash daily then once a week I wash all the microfibres from the week on a hot bleach wash.

I am interested in the silicone sponges, I am always conscious of how often we replace the sponge.
