Husband doesn't like touching a dish cloth

Gointothesun · 17/11/2023 03:13

My husband doesn't like to use a dish cloth. He seems to find them gross.

I have bought good ones and have asked if he's happy to use them. He says yes, but then hardly ever does.

When it's my husband's turn to clear up after dinner, he uses kitchen roll and those disposable wipes from packets to clean surfaces.

We didn't live together before we got married and I never realised.

AIBU to find this a bit of a turn-off? I actually find it quite unattractive when I see him getting the disposable wipes out!

Don't blame him, I think they are disgusting and unless they are constantly being put in the washer or bleached I wouldn't like one on my surface either.

However that isn't to say you can't use a reusable cloth just for surfaces and rinse well and air to dry

WoollyBat · 17/11/2023 08:37

I don’t like touching dishcloths either (even though I wash them after every use) and I hate touching dirty dishes when bits so food or liquid drip on my hands. So I wear rubber gloves. He could do that?

Twixxer · 17/11/2023 08:38

I absolutely cannot stand dish clothes. I wash them daily to reduce my discomfort but I absolutely hate them. I get my kids to clean the counter tops, I do enough around here.

WigItAnyway · 17/11/2023 08:38

Dishcloths are only unhygienic if reuse them without washing them. I use several a day and they all go in a weekly wash with the tea towels. You just need a system. I have a large tub in the utility that they all get thrown in.

Is it the texture of them? Can he wear rubber gloves? Using kitchen roll and disposable wipes is just adding to landfill. Reusable all the way.

category12 · 17/11/2023 08:44

Maybe he'd be happier with a dish-brush or something?

Dishcloths are pretty gross and unhygienic unless you're washing & drying them a lot.

Obviously disposable wipes are bad environmentally, but there's probably a product you could compromise on.

Bostonbakedbeans · 17/11/2023 08:49

I use a dishbrush to wash the dishes (and sometimes a Jcloth) but both get bleached a couple of times a week.

Sunshineandflipflops · 17/11/2023 08:49

We use a flat sponge with two different sides for wiping sides, rinse after every use and and wash it every so often. For dishes we use the dishwasher and/or one of those spontex scrubbers with a handle and change it when needed. I'm not a fan of dish cloths.

Namechange666 · 17/11/2023 08:55

Tell him to use marigolds if he can't stand the texture.

RosaBaby2 · 17/11/2023 09:00

All I read was "Husband doesn't like touching cloth" and was thinking well does anyone?! 💩

I use cloths for surfaces but wash it each time. Washing up brush for dishes.

SwordToFlamethrower · 17/11/2023 09:01

Use a clean, new dish cloth every day.

Yetmorebeanstocount · 17/11/2023 09:02

'Dishcloth' is a bit of a misnomer for many people as they only use them for wiping surfaces, not actually doing the dishes / washing up.

We use them for surfaces. If just a few crumbs were wiped, I rinse under a hot tap and leave hanging to dry on the edge of the sink - it is basically a clean cloth that got wet and is now drying, not smelly or unhygienic at all.
If anything sticky or messy was wiped, I rinse the cloth under the tap to get the worst off but then put it into a particular laundry tub to go in the next hot wash.

DH will use it for sticky, greasy messes, then leave in a wet heap in the bottom of the sink for the next person (me) to deal with 😡

We also use disposable anti-bac wipes for cleaning in and around the kitchen bin, and for spot-cleaning of floors. The dishcloth never ever touches the floor, of course.

Baneofmyexistence · 17/11/2023 09:14

I use one but never with bare hands! I always use gloves. Can’t wash the dishes without gloves either, I can’t stand touching any wet soggy food, reminds me of sick and makes me heave. We all have our weird things! 😂

MermaidEyes · 17/11/2023 09:17

You find it a turn off and unattractive when you see him getting disposable wipes out? Seriously?!

CrispsandCheeseSandwich · 17/11/2023 09:20

I use cloths but change them daily. When I'm wiping down the kitchen I'll put on rubber gloves, get a dry cloth, and use hot soapy water to wipe stuff down. They get rinsed, and then thrown in the washing machine with everything else. I wouldn't be happy with him using disposable wipes all the time. It's a waste of money for a start. There's no reason he can't wear gloves and use a fresh cloth.

I don't use a sodden cloth that's been hanging on the sink for days/weeks. My mum does this, and tries to use it to wipe my DDs' faces as well 🤢

stealthninjamum · 17/11/2023 09:22

I use J cloths too but probably do throw a lot away. Even though we have a dishwasher I still end up doing some washing up every day and they do get smelly and chucked out. I am really liking the look of the brushes that go in the dishwasher every day.

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/11/2023 09:23

He’s doing his share. Not up to you to tell him how. Wipes and paper are probably far more hygienic.
Weirdest AIBU I think I’ve seen.

BlackJumpsuit · 17/11/2023 09:28

I've seen this little set on Amazon which includes a sponge you can chuck in the dishwasher

KitchTool Silicone Sponge | Hygienic Antibacterial Eco Sponge | Silicone Washing Up Sponge | Odour & Mould Free | Pan Safe Silicon Scrubber |Multiuse Dishwashing Scrubber, Kitchen Sponges amzn.eu/d/f9SQht3

BlackJumpsuit · 17/11/2023 09:29

I was going to suggest gloves also but then I realised that I hate wearing them so why would I suggest that for someone else? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Kayte198999 · 17/11/2023 09:37

I have silicone dish sponges (they're not very good but they are more hygienic), normal sponges and microfibre cloths. I hate touching them all! They feel gross when wet, I know they probably have tiny bits of food on them and getting my hands wet makes them dry. I think you're being unreasonable to find it a turn-off but I also think he's being unreasonable to use disposable cloths every day. Buy him some black washing up gloves (suspect you will get the ick if he puts Marigolds on) and then he can touch everything without getting grossed out

TheKnittedCharacter · 17/11/2023 09:40

We use those vileda yellow cloths for wiping work surfaces and they get washed after every use. I won’t touch a cloth without wearing rubber gloves, so I’m sort of with him.

erikbloodaxe · 17/11/2023 09:41

He cleans up! Why does it matter what he uses. You cannot dictate what he uses to get the job done.

GentlemansRelish · 17/11/2023 09:43

Tistheseasontobejollytrala · 17/11/2023 08:28

But they are not for doing the dishes! A scrubby sponge is needed for that. The dishcloth or Microfibre cloth is just for wiping down surfaces. I also get a fresh one out every day. They are not minging in my house.

Yes, I don't use 'dishcloths' -- I use scrubby sponge type things for washing up, teatowels for drying stuff, and have a series of separate washable cloths for wiping down surfaces. (I wouldn't call them 'dishcloths', though. That to me implies something for doing the dishes.)

Lemmoella · 17/11/2023 10:07

Ok I also don’t like dishcloths. I have found that they usually end up with a funny smell. I am probably icky about them too, sorry OP!
Growing up my mum had a completely grey grotty old dishcloth that got used on everything and it used to make me feel sick.

StrawberryWater · 17/11/2023 10:27

For washing dishes get him one of those brushes with a handle (or one of those ones you can put the washing up liquid in) and for surfaces just let him carry on with anti bac wipes.

I hate dish clothes too. They're horrible and get unhygienic fast.

Cheeesus · 17/11/2023 10:31

I’d be intolerant of someone using single use things like that.

Those of you saying cloths are unhygienic, if you rinse them out and let them dry, they are perfectly germ free.

But OP, I think the sponge things above look great for dishes, then you could get these cloths for surfaces. They dry really quickly, or put them in the wash at the end of each day.
