Husband doesn't like touching a dish cloth

My husband doesn't like to use a dish cloth. He seems to find them gross.

I have bought good ones and have asked if he's happy to use them. He says yes, but then hardly ever does.

When it's my husband's turn to clear up after dinner, he uses kitchen roll and those disposable wipes from packets to clean surfaces.

We didn't live together before we got married and I never realised.

AIBU to find this a bit of a turn-off? I actually find it quite unattractive when I see him getting the disposable wipes out!

I'm Team DH

Dishcloths are the work of Beelzebub and should burn in the depths of hell 🤪🤪

Dishcloths are actually really unhygienic unless you are putting them through the wash after every use we use anti bacterial wipes for all surfaces.

GodDammitCecil · 19/11/2023 01:45

But wipes are so bad for the environment, and the cost over time is significant.

Reusable clothes are better on both points.

It’s never occurred to me to use a cloth to wash dishes. We use a brush or a scouring pad.

The cloth is just used to wipe down surfaces, is rinsed under warm/hot water after use (it doesn’t get dirty - it wipes down crumbs, coffee spills, etc) and then hung to dry, and washed daily.

I use a fresh dishcloth every day - chuck them in a bucket end of each day and wash them on a hot wash once bucket is full. I don't like touching dishcloths that have sat around for days on end being used over and over so I can understand on that front.

Coconutter24 · 19/11/2023 20:38

Tbh if it was my DH turn to clean the kitchen and I didn’t like the way he did it I’d just leave him in the kitchen with his anti bacterial wipes and return once he’s finished 😂

SimplyTheGuest · 19/11/2023 21:24

He sounds like he has his head screwed on to me! Dish cloths for washing dishes are vile, hubby is a keeper imo.

I don’t think the op has been back since she posted?

uncomfortablydumb53 · 19/11/2023 22:36

I've never bought a white knitted dishcloth if that's the type you mean?
Childhood memories of them draped across the tap so I'm with your DH on that but I do think kitchen roll is a waste
I use an ecloth washing up pad which is dual sided and flat
Easy to sterilise by microwaving for 20 seconds damp and are washable too

No I don’t like dishcloths either, they give me the ick. They are smelly, soggy germ incubators. Most pots and pans go in the dishwasher but for the rest , I use a thin sponge and throw it away after I’ve used it. Worktops get wiped with disposable antibacterial wipes.

You must get through a lot of sponges @fridaynight1 !

I thought it was normal to clean sides down with disposables etc, I use spray and kitchen roll. Using the dishcloth to clean the sides down is 🤢 and I'm far from a clean freak!

GodDammitCecil · 20/11/2023 07:56

What are ‘sides’…?

Bench tops….?

Ryanstartedthefire2 · 20/11/2023 08:01

My husband is OK with cloths but is really squeamish about baby vomit and poo and will look so stressed out changing a nappy or wiping up a bit of sick. Ngl it's a turn off and i just think "grow up" you massive lamo.

Rosesarecolourful · 20/11/2023 08:29

'Sides' are kitchen work tops.

Sides are the kitchen worktops. I'm Scottish & when we were young we called them bunkers lol, it was normal then (1960's) but does sound strange to me now 😂

JennyGracexx · 20/11/2023 09:32

To be honest I'm not a fan either!
I do use them but I feel like I have to add them to the washing pile after every use.
My husband cleans everything with wipes. It's probably a man thing Hmm

Gointothesun · 20/11/2023 17:42

Thanks everyone, and this has helped me realise that he isn't the only one who struggles to use a dish cloth....

By 'dish cloth', I think I define it quite widely to mean a cloth that's used to clean worktops and sometimes dishes (I would use a scourer for dishes normally).

When it comes to cleaning something like a hob, surely you need a proper sturdy cloth and hot water. Not a flimsy disposable wipe!

I get the ick because it's wasteful, and it's just a cloth.

Also, I have never seen him scrub a saucepan (he just puts it straight into dishwasher, I guess because he doesn't want to touch it).

I have grown up with those nasty grey dishcloths, but I use flat sponges. I rinse them in hot water. But will put them in dishwasher from now on - that might help things, thank you!

Buy loads of dishcloths and use a new one each day. I’m really funny about touching dishcloths and this is the only way I can use them.

madeinmanc · 20/11/2023 19:16

There's millions of us! 😅
I'm going to put: "dishcloth averse, seeking similar" in my OLD profile.

Shoppingfiend · 01/01/2024 07:46

I like cotton dishcloths. They just wipe up better imv on hot or cold surfaces. Rinse them under the tap and squeeze them out tightly - they stay fine then for several days. Bleach or hot wash them when you have a pile.

I can't see a reusable sponge being more hygienic than a reusable dishcloth.

TwilightSkies · 01/01/2024 07:49

Get him a few pairs of Marigolds and tell him to get over himself.

Westernesse · 01/01/2024 08:20

A “turn-off”? WTF?
