Husband doesn't like touching a dish cloth

My husband doesn't like to use a dish cloth. He seems to find them gross.

I have bought good ones and have asked if he's happy to use them. He says yes, but then hardly ever does.

When it's my husband's turn to clear up after dinner, he uses kitchen roll and those disposable wipes from packets to clean surfaces.

We didn't live together before we got married and I never realised.

AIBU to find this a bit of a turn-off? I actually find it quite unattractive when I see him getting the disposable wipes out!

I hate dishcloths, the idea of them damp and festering 🤢. I have always used biodegradable anti bac surface wipes.

I'm with you, has he no consideration for the planet, and your wallets? he needs to get over that. I use the same dishcloth for a few days, then wash as usual. We are never ill. People are too over hygienic. I never use disinfectant or bleach either.

Caswallonthefox · 17/11/2023 15:26

I knit my own dishcloths and sling them in the wash after each use. I use a washing up sponge, once or twice and throw it.
My ds, in his wisdom, bought a fancy scrubbing brush that you put washing up liquid in. He just used it as a brush, when I questioned the logic of spending 15 quid on something you can get for less than a fiver. He said he didn't like touching the dishes. It's now sat in a cupboard and he uses a sponge.

Yes but this doesn’t mean the DH is right and the OP is wrong

I didn't say it did.

Its still up to the two of them to have chat, communicate and find a way that works for them both

Seriously? OP can use dishcloths all she wants. Her DH can clean the kitchen using his own methods. It's a complete non issue that doesn't require a second thought let alone a chat.

Well if the OP is very environmentally minded OR if finances are tight, leaving the DH do whatever he wants isn’t going to cut it.

If the issue is that he doesn’t do things the same way than her, then I agree with you. She needs to let go. But communicating (well) is never going to be a waste of time.

I'm with him. In this house we use a fresh microfibre cloth for each clean, then toss it into a special box in the garage until time to launder. I can't abide a horrid dishcloth hanging on the sink 🤢

aSofaNearYou · 17/11/2023 16:19

What about sponges? That's what I use.

pastypirate · 17/11/2023 18:10

@blacksax thank you for my first proper laugh in a while

Aww bless, using a dishcloth will obviously make his penis drop off.

Gold!!!

Same. My sister threw some of my blue clothe away in summer saying they looked old so must be full of bacteria. I said I washed them in the washing machine after id used them. She said she hadnt thought of that and just threw hers away.

Ah my grandma used to knit her own dishcloths. I had a few too. Still didn't like them but I used them for a while. And bleached daily.

One Milton tablet will be enough in that! Stop wasting money/overusing chemicals!

turkeyboots · 17/11/2023 18:34

My DM has 2 dishcloths and they get washed once a week. Grey, smelly and so so gross.
I have a mountain of dishcloths and use a fresh one each time.
We both think each other is entirely unreasonable.

SquirrelFan · 17/11/2023 21:46

@category12 thanks for that! We use sponges and scrubby brushes to wash dishes, just couldn't picture a dishcloth! Can't imagine it getting dishes clean (re: veg drying-it's not weird really, say a couple of clean potatoes or some blueberries dried by a towel, then fold the towel over a couple of times - for better absorbancy and to get to a "clean" side - to wipe up splashes from the sink).

zurala · 17/11/2023 22:00

Team OP here.

I hate sponges and brushes, love a good dishcloth, they get washed regularly and are by far the great way to clean anything.

I would also get the ick at someone using disposable wipes and kitchen roll but then I wouldn't have those in my house anyway, they are far too bad for the planet. My husband used to be ridiculous like this about touching wet cloths and stuff like that, but he got over it once we got married. It is such a turn off seeing a man be so pathetic about a damp cloth.

CherryBlossom321 · 17/11/2023 22:10

I don’t touch dishcloths with bare hands either, I wear gloves. Also, how is what he’s doing a turn off? It’s not as if a man brandishing a smelly dishcloth is a turn ON, is it?! 😂

Eike · 17/11/2023 22:23

I think machine washing a dishcloth after every single use is a bit much. Spray some cleaner on it and some washing up liquid and scrub it under some really hot water, wring it out it will be fine. Bleach it every few uses in the sink and with boiling water.

i rarely machine wash my cloths because I have to pay to use a Launderette and can't just add random extra washes for things.

betterangels · 18/11/2023 03:05

I'm with him. They're gross.

Grendell · 18/11/2023 04:00

Team Husband!!

Nasty e-coli rags.....oh hell no

HerRoyalNotness · 18/11/2023 04:08

I can’t stand the feel of them. It’s from childhood. My mother used to bleach them and they’d be all slimy and gross when I had wring them out. To this day I can’t stand the smell of bleach. I use a sponge and clorox wipes

I increasingly feel like I have fallen into a parallel universe on MN ..
Dishcloths are disgusting..omg the germs..bleaching everything...
Someone actually uses thing scrubby sponges and throws them away after each use...?
We are doomed as a species. Seriously, where does all this germ phobia come from? How do you think we have survived up until now without single use cleaning products...

Thought it was just me left unafraid of my dishcloth!

Wash them each day.

Yes a dishcloth after two weeks will be unhealthy, but a clean cloth is fine.

Oblomov23 · 18/11/2023 05:13

Clearly loads of posters agree with him. Hardly marriage breaking. Wipes, sponge scourer etc, loads of ways round it.

LindorDoubleChoc · 18/11/2023 06:05

It makes me really sad to read about people throwing washing up sponges away all the time and being phobic about dishcloths. I don't change my dishcloth every day and it is perfectly nice! After I've made tea I empty the boiling water from the kettle over the dishcloth wring it out and hang to dry. I use the thin white cotton ones, they dry faster than microfibre and don't shed plastics into the water system.

To refresh your washing up sponge. Soak in cold water and microwave on high for 1 minute.

Brushes go in the dishwasher.

JanglingJack · 18/11/2023 06:09

Germiest things in the house and I'm no clean freak!

You get some decent J cloths now that wash fine (I appreciate a dish cloth washes) but they're far easier if you have a pile to use one put it aside for washing, use another etc.

My Mum used to wash up, wipe, clean sink, then dish cloth would sit in bleach/water overnight.

Horses for courses!

PurBal · 18/11/2023 06:28

I’d much rather use a clean, dry dish cloth / microfibre cloth than kitchen roll. I was more environmentally friendly prior to kids so I understand the need for single use products but still try not to add things to the landfill where possible. Just use a clean one? I use at least one a day.
