Dating a guy with an awful first name (light-hearted)

To be clear - this is a lighthearted thread - I know he can't help his name and I'm obviously going to carry on seeing this guy - we met on a dating app and I knew his name before matching with him.. but it's a very unsexy name.. really not a fan of it. Can't figure out a nickname that works either (he's told me a nickname his friends use too and I'm not a fan of that either) - although to be clear he has no idea I have any qualms with his name of course!

So for anyone else who's ever done this - I assume you just get used to the name after a while and it stops being so strange!?... Um.. right...!?

Feel free to guess his name/give me your worst names for a guy and if it would ever stop you from dating him?

I dated a Nigel a few years ago. Contrary to his name he was super hot. But I did find his name a turn off.

Gene sounds really cool to me. And I don't hate Keith. Barry just sounds a bit wet as a name. But nowhere near as ugly sounding and looking as Nigel, Derek and Clive. Mind you, there was a sexy doctor called Clive in Casualty once...

Barry is better than Baz. I agree with him that in a relationship, one rarely uses each others names.

Barry might sound a bit meek and unassuming, but if you amend it slightly and call him Sgt Bash (like the one from Robot Wars), Grrrrrrrr!!!!!!!!

I love the name Randy. It is a relative’s name and he is a stellar person. A lot of these names are fine names. Some are just awful and I don’t understand why anyone would perpetuate them even to honor a loved one. Eugene for instance. Harold. Just two letters’ difference from the noble word herald. I used to think George was terrible but I guess most names take on the personality of the person and can be quite wonderful. Arthur, it’s hard for me to like because it’s just an ugly sounding name, although there are two great ones, King Arthur and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Martin is the worst. I dated one for a few years and even when the relationship was good I cringed at his name (he never knew).
Turned out to be an abusing piece of shit so tbh his name was the least of my issues

I just want to say op that I feel your pain. I knew it was going to be Barry when i read your post. Other names may not be super sexy, but no name is as unattractive as Barry. I feel for him, but it is just a name and your associations with it will change for the positive if your relationship deepens.

My elderly widowed aunt met a widower and they got married. At the wedding his middle name was revealed as Algernon. You could heat the audible snigger from the congregation 😆

On men called Maria, one of the earliest celebrity crushes in my life was Klaus Maria Brandauer, I had the biggest hots for him as a teenager (despite him being 20 years older than I am!). I always thought his name was just the coolest. I wish I'd managed to have a boyfriend called Maria at some point!
