Dating a guy with an awful first name (light-hearted)

To be clear - this is a lighthearted thread - I know he can't help his name and I'm obviously going to carry on seeing this guy - we met on a dating app and I knew his name before matching with him.. but it's a very unsexy name.. really not a fan of it. Can't figure out a nickname that works either (he's told me a nickname his friends use too and I'm not a fan of that either) - although to be clear he has no idea I have any qualms with his name of course!

So for anyone else who's ever done this - I assume you just get used to the name after a while and it stops being so strange!?... Um.. right...!?

Feel free to guess his name/give me your worst names for a guy and if it would ever stop you from dating him?

My DH's name is also the heroine's name (it's a unisex name) in one of my favourite childhood book series, so that's nice for me too.

I think I would have found it difficult to take on Gary, Gavin, Kevin, Nigel, Neville or Eugene.

My dad's name is Randy.

or S

or O

DH has a really horrible name. It's not on this list because it's not a British name.
He can barely get out his own name; it's so horrible. Plus it is a version of a common Asian name, so people think it is Common Asian Name.

Possible nicknames

Bazza
Bazzo
Bazzy

I've put a lot of thought into these 😁

Basil is worse than Barry. Can't think of Basil without hearing it in Sybil's voice.

ColdHandsHotHead · 03/07/2023 15:56

trevor
damien

kingtamponthefurred · 03/07/2023 15:56

Dwayne. Or worse, Duwayne.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/07/2023 15:57

Well, there was the Vauxhall Nova, which allegedly didn't sell well in Spain because Nova means 'doesn't go.'

And don't forget the Mitsubishi Pajero, which is Spanish slang for either a liar or somebody spending private time in some vigorous self-love!

ThroughGraceAlone · 03/07/2023 15:57

Oh, I actually quite like the name Barry. I really thought it was going to be something you wouldn't want to say like Anustikle, or Thrush or Gaddafi, stalin. Now it's Barry. You got off light I would say

Lentilweaver · 03/07/2023 15:57

Basil is definitely terrible. I think I might not be able to get past that. Same goes for Dudley.

Pebblesontheside · 03/07/2023 15:57

It’s got to be Norman!

theDudesmummy · 03/07/2023 15:57

I also wouldn't like Geoffrey or Geoff for some reason.

If I had a partner with one of the names I don't like I would probably try calling them by an initial or set of initials if possible. (There's nothing wrong with my own first name apart from being rather too common for my liking, but at university I was, for some reason which I cannot remember, known universally by my three initials).

Juanmartinez · 03/07/2023 15:57

Just call him B

Lentilweaver · 03/07/2023 15:58

Btw, I know someone called Lenin and someone called Stalin too. DH once knew someone called DeGaulle.

hattie43 · 03/07/2023 15:58

Clive

Sheldoncoopersspot · 03/07/2023 15:58

My dh is a Barry when he annoys me he gets called Beryl and around my friends and some family members I call him my lover 😁

Maggiesgirl · 03/07/2023 15:59

DH is a Barry, always called Bazz. All 4 of my brothers names are amongst the other names on here 🤣

IncompleteSenten · 03/07/2023 15:59

I hated my husband's name at first.
Now I can't believe I ever disliked it!

Not tempted to use Gavlahhhhhh?😄

Oh, we do!😂😂😂

Outing if anyone knows us (hi 👋🏼) but my sisters name is Tracey 😂. Our mum is also a Pamela. Her Gavin is Welsh and we’re from London so quite similar to the show!

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 03/07/2023 15:59

I know under-10s called Derrick, 2x Desmond and endless Berts 😄❤️

Also men in their late 30s called Nigel and Colin, even that is young for those names!

OR ahead of their time, as these things come full circle. OP your partner may just be ahead of the times and v cool indeed.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 03/07/2023 15:59

And then of course being RC he also had a confirmation name. Guess what that was?

Worse than Herbert?! Obadiah?!

Maireas · 03/07/2023 15:59

@24Dogcuddler . Brilliant 👌
