Dating a guy with an awful first name (light-hearted)

whatsinanameanywayright · 03/07/2023 14:13

To be clear - this is a lighthearted thread - I know he can't help his name and I'm obviously going to carry on seeing this guy - we met on a dating app and I knew his name before matching with him.. but it's a very unsexy name.. really not a fan of it. Can't figure out a nickname that works either (he's told me a nickname his friends use too and I'm not a fan of that either) - although to be clear he has no idea I have any qualms with his name of course!

So for anyone else who's ever done this - I assume you just get used to the name after a while and it stops being so strange!?... Um.. right...!?

Feel free to guess his name/give me your worst names for a guy and if it would ever stop you from dating him?

In my youth I went out with a lad called Festus, my friends used to call him Fester, the relationship was very brief!

As he's Barry, hope your name is Freda, OP

Slap you on the arse with the Woman's Weekly

FrancisSeaton · 03/07/2023 17:29

I went out with a Derek.
Turns out he also had a girlfriend so he had a terrible unsexy name and was a cheat

Barry is ok, actually. I used to know a VERY handsome Dutch man who worked for Nokia, and he was called Barald. Barald, Barry.... not so bad.

Poppins2016 · 03/07/2023 17:34

I don't like my DHs name (and more specifically, his nickname, which is what he's always used).

You do just get used to it and see past it... eventually... 🤣

NortieTortie · 03/07/2023 17:38

Just call him babe/dickhead (lovingly), whichever is more your style. Eventually you'll forget he even has a name.

Hallmark1234 · 03/07/2023 17:42

It must be a generational thing, as I know several Barrys and wouldn't bat an eyelid if someone told me that was his name!

My grandma was engaged to a Canadian solider called Wilfred in the 1st world war, she didnt marry him in the end and married my grandpa, but my DF had a cuddly bunny as a child called Wilfred, I always wondered if my grandpa was OK with his son naming his teddy after his DW ex! :)

My 2 DC went to school/college with Wilfreds! 2 of them - born early to mid 1990s. Most people called them Will and Wilf. Not coz they were embarrassed by their name(s,) but because they just shortened it (like most people do with many people with names of more than one syllable!)

CapEBarra · 03/07/2023 17:52

I went out with someone who called himself Neil but he was really called Gilbert. He was definitely more of a Gilbert than a Neil if you know what I mean.

I feel for both of you. I have a very old fashioned name that is not a timeless classic or one that has become fashionable again. I have only ever met one person with my name that is any younger than my mum. Quite a few people have told me that when they met me (having been given my name beforehand) they were expecting a much older woman. I'm sure DH's colleagues have assumed (before they met me hopefully!) that he married someone at least 30 years older than him. My name is also one with no nice nicknames/shortenings and my middle name is equally badly dated. I would quite like to change it, but then I know I'd be forever referred to as 'her who used to be called Doreen*'

  • not my actually badly dated name but in the same area

My MIL was a Doreen but insisted it was pronounced D’reen putting the emphasis on the second syllable. She thought it sounded better. 😂

Kelljo83 · 03/07/2023 17:59

Ronald, Barry, Nigel, Trevor. Its gotta be one of them 😂

Bananalanacake · 03/07/2023 18:06

I dated a Roger, years before I joined MN and learned about cocklodgers, I think he was one but I didn't stick around long enough to find out.

Somethingneedstochange78 · 03/07/2023 18:13

I actually think Barry is ok. I was expecting something weird like Junior, Basil, or Maximilian.

Ohidontbloodyknow · 03/07/2023 18:20

Dirk

IamnotHWhittier · 03/07/2023 18:20

I had a friend in America when I was a student there called Barry, never gave it a second thought tbh.
A friend here in uk married a guy called Waz, so on balance I think you’ve got the edge there.

Friends kids called Maximilian, Montgomery and Mungo!
I think they’re all fine, just not that common these days.

DH is a Kevin. Hate the name. Love him so it worked out in the end.

Move to Ireland.
The name Kevin is grand in Ireland.
Sure isn't it a saint's name - St Kevin of Glendalough in Wicklow.
No connotations at all in Ireland.

ChocChipHandbag · 03/07/2023 18:27

I met an Irish Kevina once, a woman. Wasn’t expecting that!

I knew a very attractive Nigel

Me too.

He was my friend's boyfriend though, so out of bounds.

Possibly just as well, a few years after they split he came out as gay.

Dorisbonson · 03/07/2023 17:24

Piers
Henry
Greville
Stuart
Felix
Bernard

There's nothing wrong with any of those names.

Barry is just non-descript. It's not terrible.

Lee is awful.

stayflufft · 03/07/2023 18:37

Barry! Good lord. Can’t imagine saying that breathily in the throes of passion - but if he’s a lovely man, what’s in a name?!

DelphiniumBlue · 03/07/2023 18:40

There's s very handsome actor called Barry something?Atsma? Who was in The Split. Check him out, it somehow makes being a Barry more acceptable!
