Dating a guy with an awful first name (light-hearted)

whatsinanameanywayright · 03/07/2023 14:13

To be clear - this is a lighthearted thread - I know he can't help his name and I'm obviously going to carry on seeing this guy - we met on a dating app and I knew his name before matching with him.. but it's a very unsexy name.. really not a fan of it. Can't figure out a nickname that works either (he's told me a nickname his friends use too and I'm not a fan of that either) - although to be clear he has no idea I have any qualms with his name of course!

So for anyone else who's ever done this - I assume you just get used to the name after a while and it stops being so strange!?... Um.. right...!?

Feel free to guess his name/give me your worst names for a guy and if it would ever stop you from dating him?

I just have this image of Barry from Eastenders with his receding hairline and awful suits!

theDudesmummy · 03/07/2023 16:25

I lost my virginity to a Mark who turned out to be rather a wet with an awful family, so don't really like that one any more.

My friend's dad was Evelyn. He didn't use it.

Peter File, Jen from IT Crowd's short lived relationship. "Taxi!"

No Barry is not short for Barold

It was a joke...

Changed my name for this post.

Years ago in the early days of internet dating I got chatting to a nice guy. Didn’t know his real name initially, just a site username. Eventually he phoned me to arrange a date… my heart sank when he told me his name was Wayne. I knew it was not going to work out as my name is Jayne. (Shallow! 😆) I did like him, but “Jayne&Wayne” was really not appealing.
We are still friends, and fortunately both married people with better name combinations!

Aww I do feel sorry for all these guys, but...I was dating a Brian for a while and told my mates it was Ryan... I didn't think it had legs and didn't want to have the piss taken out of me for it.
Terrible really, as it is only a name. I would have sucked it up if I'd really liked him.

My sister learned as she signed her marriage license that her husband's official name was Homer.

He went by Rick and she thought his name was Richard. (the middle one was.)

Oops! You're right. So then there is only one Baz on my list 😂

Lloyd?

Is it Ken??
I once dated a guy called Ken in my late teens. He was absolutely gorgeous but young shallow me couldn't get my head round being with a man called Ken.

theDudesmummy · 03/07/2023 16:36

I also like Ken, from the Anne of Green Gables association (her daughter Rilla marries a Ken).

I managed a Ken. He was a short, smug ass of a guy who cheated on his wife and was proud of it. Nasty character! And he used fake tan!

It does seem as if most Chrises are asses. Which strikes me as unjust.

I’ve always liked the name Mark. Handsome and kind boy from school.

Almost every Chris I've ever known was a complete tosser, so much so that I have the specifically labelled Worried Chris and Nice Chris as the exceptions. You wouldn't need like "Nice Mike" as most Mikes are at least ok for some reason.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 03/07/2023 16:39

Barry’s not the best but I once went out with a Norbert - that’s a very unsexy name.

Rizzoli and Isles reference?

Friend's partner is Barry and her son in law is also Barry.

I do hope Mr Hemsworth is the exception.

Barry White and Barry Gibb are cool. Not so much Barry from Auf Wiedersehen Pet! 😆

The legendary Barry Taylor is the best Barry ever!

I'd probably try making calling him 'B' a thing 🤣
Failing that you'd have to adopt the 'babe' nickname at every given oppurtunity

My ex with a clunky name and an excruciating star wars themed nickname he'd had since his little brother was 7 (and by then was 35) spent 4 years with me calling him Babe. Even though by the end of it, I was clearly thinking of the annoying little pig every time I said it.
