Men not being attracted to obese women

itchyhands3 · 20/04/2023 12:50

I've just watched a video by an' expert' emphatically saying that men do not as a rule find obese women attractive unless they have a specific fetish for obese women.

I don't know what to think for I would be considered obese on scales but certainly don't feel I look obese and consider myself relatively attractive and some men have expressed attraction towards me
.
I'm 5'7' and over thirteen and a half stone . Size 14-16 .I am 49.
This has really unsettled me for some reason. How insulting . But is it true ?

The reproductive advantage, in evolutionary time (not present time) was that people with these traits could live more healthily in areas that were further away from the equator. They could absorb the vit D they needed from darker skies/shorter days due to a fairer skin and develop into reproductive adults. I think. If you were unhealthy and infertile due to malnutrition caused by a darker skin unable to allow vit D synthesis then fewer darker skinned people would have reproduced over millions of years and therefore fairer skin was sexually selected in far northern hemisphere.

I think people are getting sexual selection and sexual attractiveness a bit mixed up.

I think you missed the post by the 'geneticist' [sic] who explained that men fancy blonde women because they have strong bones, and fancy 'petite' women because they 'eat less of the family's food' 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

It's not posters here who are mixing up natural selection and sexual attractiveness. It's the entire pseudoscience that is evolutionary psychology, and its self-appointed representative here.

Yeah, the blond hair/strong bones thing is bollox

I think you haven't had the pleasure of meeting @Nimbostratus100 before. Whatever the thread, they have the professional expertise needed. Like magic. 👍

It takes a professional geneticist to tell us that blonde hair makes women attractive because they have strong bones. 🤪

Except oops, they don't, so let's write some very long rambling posts with a side order of personal insults to try to cover that bit up.

what length of time do you think humans lived under prehistoric conditions compared to under modern conditions?

how do you think northern european women obtained adequate vitamin D in those circumstances?

what do you think happened to the babies of women without adequate vitamin D during gestation?

Why might men prefer women who were able to maintain adequate vitamin D in their bodies during pregnancy?

What effect do you think this might have had on the sexual preferences of men at this time?

I would like to see you answer this - should be interesting

TellMeTheMewth · 20/04/2023 22:26

I thought it was pretty common knowledge about the theory of blonde hair being spread the way it was cos of the attractiveness factor?

Though, forgive me if I'm wrong, but my understanding is the theory is that the attractiveness part was because it was a unique trait, right? As in, it gave blonde women the stand out edge because they were eye catching?

So if everyone was default blonde haired and then a brunette gene emerged and only a handful of brunette heads existed amongst a sea of blondes, that part would be the same?

Dno why people get so shirty about that. It's nothing to do with saying there's something intrinsically superior appearance wise to being blonde.

Personally I think capitalist culture continues to push the idea that blonde = more attractive in general because most women do not have naturally blonde hair therefore there is a shit ton of money in getting someone to commit to years of hair colouring. But that's a whole other thread...

rumbusiness · 20/04/2023 22:27

Nimbostratus100 · 20/04/2023 22:22

no, but I am talking about northern europeans, which I am not. and yes, I am a geneticist. ANd no, you are not a brain surgeon.

Again, on mumsnet I am amazed how people react so aggressively and which such hostility to simple, basic, undisputed scientific facts,

In what way are these simple, straightforward, undisputed, scientific facts such a threat to you?

Let us remind ourselves of the quite glorious 'simple, undisputed scientific facts' which you posted on page 1 of this thread.

It's funny enough to repost in full, I think.

Nimbostratus100 · Today 12:56
The whole point of physical attraction is that a man is attracted to a woman to get her pregnant and propagate his genes. Many basic urges are based on this. It doesn't mean all men are attracted to the same thing, and it differs by climate, of course, but many of these things are evolutionary.

slim waist - not already pregnant
wide hips- more likely to carry a pregnancy successfully
breasts - nurture a baby
blond hair- baby gets stronger bones
petite - less competition for resources, and family resources go further if the woman needs fewer calories

and so on

that last one I think is probably my favourite. Or is it the suggestion that, erm, breasts might be helpful?!

Good of you to explain to the uneducated mothers what our breasts might be for.

🤪

saythebellsofstclements · 20/04/2023 22:27

Very few adults have naturally blond hair anyway. It's almost always bleached/highlighted beyond the age of 16.

If anything, people who like blond hair equate it to youth.

humans are dimorphic, as many animals are - this means one strong parent to defend the family, and one smaller parent to decrease the overall amount of resources the family needs

in many cases the male is the larger sex. not all, there are also many cases where the female is the larger.

The whole point though, is dimorphism works best for the reasons I have just given

TellMeTheMewth · 20/04/2023 22:28

......and obviously in modern society we all have much more going for us than solely relying on hoping our hair colour is a bit different to the women around us!

Did you just make all this bullshit up?
Yes you did.
Well, now that we are all full of bullshit, let me explain why men who wear baseball caps are sexually attractive and at a reproductive advantage… When the sun is shining, some men put on baseball caps because they are clever enough to realise that the harsh sun can damage eyes. Shielding their eyes from the sun’s harmful rays makes women come to the conclusion that these men are smart and will produce equally smart children so they get the fanny gallops for these men and want them to be the father of their clever offsprings. Really…

older adults dont need blond hair, only children, who are growing bones, and young women who are of child bearing age.

Having ginger hair is even rarer than being blonde. So by your logic we should all be dyeing our hair orange, right?

@DHsPoorBack Were you a size 6, when you met, 30 years ago?
Hmmm. I think I was probably a small 10? Maybe 8 on top 10 on the bottom. Why?

Because at the point of attraction, you were very slim.

It's very different once you've become enmeshed with a partner, have created a home together, had children, to have migrated to a much bigger size and them not bat an eyelid. It's gradual, and the relationship is not about the initial meeting and assessing if someone is what you want in a partner.

simple science facts upset them so much!

I dont know what some people think evolution is, and how it works, but they seem to have spectacularly missed the point!

HyacinthBookay · 20/04/2023 22:34

Crikeyalmighty · 20/04/2023 20:19

The only reason I'm overweight isn't because I don't know about nutrition or live on junk food and cake, it's because I do actually like good food and I like cooking and wine and have a H who does too. I just like too much of it and don't do enough excercise (although I have now upped it) I don't actually eat cake, crisps, biscuits, pizza, burgers etc at all

”Good food” doesn’t necessarily mean healthy food though. All that butter and fine wine adds up. Most of us are fat because we eat too much of a good thing whether or not your good thing is fine dining or KFC.

TellMeTheMewth · 20/04/2023 22:34

Not to be nit picky but I thought sexual dimorphism was a separate part of natural selection? And can actually come at a cost?

It's not always directly correlated with being practically beneficial.

OMG this is so true! I am enlightened.

Did you know that women all get wet when they see a man in a puffa jacket? Because it makes him look bigger than he is.

It's called dye-mor-fizm. Big word but I'm clever so I know it.

On the other hand, men enjoy wanking to porn because the ladies in the pictures and videos are so ickle and tiny, and being teeny tiny is soooooo sexy. This is why they especially like to watch it on their phones, because the screen is REALLY small and it's like the ladies are only a few centimetres high. Phwoarrrr

Not sure why your tone is so hostile, I'm just chatting about the common theory, i'm not defending it as accurate, I'm just pointing out for the sake of argument, that back in the day literally thousands of years ago, they reckon this happened.

You actually can geneologically track this theory, I think it's something to do with Viking settlements and the disproportionate amount of fair hairdness that follows them?

But again I (obviously) haven't done these studies, it doesn't mean no one has and again again, it doesn't mean it's gospel either.
