Relationships
ABBREVIATIONS
Franceen · 19/03/2023 06:11
Why? I have never seen a forum communicate by the use of so many abbreviations.
I read some posts and do not have a clue what the heck is going on because of the use of abbreviations.
Is this a woke thing?
blumppump · 19/03/2023 06:19
Why is this in relationships?
There's a guide to abbreviations here: www.mumsnet.com/i/acronyms
I have no idea why you'd think it was a woke thing.
Franceen · 19/03/2023 06:24
Why have a list? Can posters just type the whole words?
I mentioned woke because I find it so BAS, I thought I would add some P to get a response.
(BAS = bizarre and surreal) (P = provocation)
Justleaveitblankthen · 19/03/2023 06:25
I thought there must be a list somewhere. Thanks for that. I only use the App so struggle through abandon the thread completely
blumppump · 19/03/2023 06:29
Why put this in relationships though? It surely should be on site stuff?
Also making up your own weird abbreviations isn't really the same thing.
Icedlatteplease · 19/03/2023 06:36
The abbreviations were really quite well known in the early days of forum-ing. Its not a new thing or a woke thing
It's not hard to learn/work out
Franceen · 19/03/2023 07:15
I partake in numerous forums. I have never seen the use of initialism as applied in Mumsnet. Of course, LOL et al. is common but .....
This is not a complaint or meant to upset people. I am simply posting an observation. I find it bizarre that people type the whole of most words and not all words.
I mentioned "woke" deliberately because wokism is weird and I find the use of abbreviations to be weird when applied in common parlance.
NATO - OPECH - WHO - BBC - ITV - OK .. OK is OK from Olla Kala. But if I put ... JG??
I tasted the wine it was OK. I tasted the wine it was JG???
WinterMusings · 19/03/2023 07:19
Jolly Good?!?!
This thread is done to death.
it is what it is, it's much faster to use the acronyms. If you don't like it, why not stick to your other forums where it's not used so much?!
blumppump · 19/03/2023 07:25
JG isn't a mumsnet acronym.
I linked to the page of common mumsnet abbreviations.
If you don't like them, you don't have to post on mumsnet, you can post on other sites on the internet
Franceen · 19/03/2023 07:30
Yes, I will do that. Thanks.
Why are you so nasty? Does the simple matter of raising an issue to do with communication offend you?
I will delete my account on Mumsnet. Thanks for YH. IWYW. GB.
Fairislefandango · 19/03/2023 07:35
Using abbreviations isn't compulsory, and other forums are available. HTH (hope this helps).
And no, it has nothing to do with wokism. Mumsnet is largely not keen on that. It's also probably not terribly keen on new people storming onto the site, telling us all that we're foruming wrong and deliberately being provicative about it.

How have I been nasty?
I linked to the page of abbreviations and I suggested if you don't like the way mumsnet members posts to post elsewhere?
I still don't understand what is woke about having abbreviations?
Franceen · 19/03/2023 07:42
"new people STORMING onto the site" LOL LOL
OK. I will leave you to your parochialism. I do not want to upset you or others via my benign post on abbreviations.
I should have started with abortion or domestic violence - please accept my heartfelt apologies to all users of this site.... I wish you well.
As Groucho said... "I would not belong to any club that would have me as a member"!!
Niceness is not good. When honesty is required.
Just saying.......
I will see if anyone replies then delete my account.

I have no idea what you mean by this or why you're reacting so strongly.
Are you ok?
Endofdaysarehere · 19/03/2023 07:47
OP - I’m new here and you’re doing it wrong.
everyone else - go away then.
OP - why is everyone mean? I’m just telling you that you are wrong. Why don’t you like me?
😂

It's a bit early in the day to be getting upset over the alphabet
Franceen · 19/03/2023 08:34
Yes I agree. I did not force the replies. I just posited a question.
Dery · 19/03/2023 09:09
I don’t think there are that many abbreviations, though, are there? And it’s for speed of typing. Especially if, like me, it’s guilty-pleasure MN surfing when I should be doing something else…
There are the relationship ones - DH, DW etc. OW, STBXH (soon to be ex-h, which is a bit less obvious perhaps). Not RTFT (not read the full thread) which can be an important point. But that’s pretty much it, isn’t it?
EmpressOfTheSofa · 19/03/2023 09:12
The very simple answer is that it’s a form of tribalism.
It’s a shared language. It adds to the feeling of belonging to a group. Most groups, large or small, will invent their own idiosyncrasies and sayings, it’s part of human nature.
Franceen · 19/03/2023 09:20
Yes. Thanks for your rational reply. I merely asked a question??
There should be a list of questions that must not be asked. (QTMNBA)
I read many posts and have to say I lost the will to live, with all the abbreviations.
