Red heart emoji on a teams work chat...

So, DH has been messaging a lass in his IT dept about some equipment he needs.

She has red hearted all his messages, and in his last message where he thanks her he has put a red heart emoji in the message.

I've seen the messages and they are innocuous, he says he has never spoken to her before but I am a bit aghast and annoyed at the red hearts.

He says I am being ridiculous and need to sort my jealousy issues out and that it means nothing.

But as someone who wouldn't use a red heart in a message to anyone other than DH then I am not so sure.

So people of Mumsnet, how would you have reacted to this?

I just got red hearted on teams this morning because I had helped someone, it's not romantic at all. Your jealousy issues are at play here OP.

It's used all the time in my teams to acknowledge a message without having to reply to it.

We send GIF's too all the time

Jimboscott0115 · 10/03/2023 12:44

A red heart in reaction to something someone has said is pretty normal - it's as close to 'thank you' as one of the quick reactions gets. I'm a consultant and working for a big corporate client and it's really common on their Teams to see this on group chats as information is shared, problems are solved etc and I do it too.

Every message would be weird but yes it's common use as a sort of 'love this' or 'massive thanks' type thing. It's basically a level up from a thumbs up.

You'll no doubt have responses from folk saying it's completely unprofessional to ever use it, but it wouldn't have been at any firm I've ever worked at, across industries and Including several household names.

"Why messaging and not emailing?"

Are you from 2006? 🤣

Laughed at this!!! So much conducted via teams now!

@ChilliBandit historical artefact 😂😂. It's up there with the overhead projectors on wheels and the dial up modem.

Remember when they wheeled the television into the school hall in the 80s ha ha. I use heart reactions all the time and even our director red hearted my message yesterday when I confirmed I sorted out something urgent at the last minute.

perfectcolourfound · 10/03/2023 15:55

We use Teams and the heart is used as shorthand for 'that's great'. Thumbs up doesn't quite do it. Examples of how it might be used:

I can confirm you won't get that holiday you asked for - thumbs up (ie I've seen this, noted)
I can confirm you're getting an extra day's holiday this year - heart (good news)

I was a but surprised the first time a colleague used a heart, but within a work environment it has a very different use to personal SM.

Whichwhatnow · 10/03/2023 16:02

I think some people are just like that. A guy on the IT helpdesk red hearts 9or occasionally puts the crying with laughter emoji) everything I write to him pretty much.

I've never met the man (he's based in Greece) and have no idea what he looks like (never had a Teams call for example). I'm not even completely sure how to pronounce his name! We message via Teams a lot because I have a lot of tech problems. I find it a bit odd because it's not something I naturally do but I certainly don't read anything into it 😅

SaltyGod · 10/03/2023 16:13

I use the red heart, it really doesn't mean that I fancy my boss, or members of my team, or the IT person who fixed my tech problem, or the lady on reception that's magically found me a previously non-existent meeting room.

But, unless you're the suspicious type, if you're worried perhaps there's more too it.

Florabeebaby · 10/03/2023 16:50

My team (male and female) uses hearts for anything...I would not think twice about it!

Never ever ever use emojis at work. Ever.

With children, family and friends (including colleagues outside of work)… hell yes.

in work? No

Tell me you don't use Teams without telling me you don't use Teams! Smile

Also op on teams in the short quick access list of emojis there is only 👍❤️😂😮 so not a lot of choice

Yup. I'm old and use these frequently on teams. The whole point is to react quickly.

It's not an generational thing. It's a work thing.

incywincyspiders · 10/03/2023 18:17

I heart react everything on teams.. if doesn't mean anything!

sn0wbun · 10/03/2023 18:37

Having read this thread yesterday, I decided to count the red hearts I sent/received today - 14 sent out, 18 received. All from people that I have no romantic interest in...or who, I sincerely hope, have no romantic interest in me. Asked DP, he's sent 3, received 5.

smellyflowers · 11/03/2023 07:54

The thumbs up is "I have received this message, read it and understood and will complete the action asked of me" the read heart is "That's great thank you so much!"

Weekenders · 11/03/2023 10:29

Alstothemarvshien · 09/03/2023 17:03

I definitely wouldn't like it. The red heart is reserved for romantic love. I thought everyone knew that?! Sending hearts to family and friends - always the other colours but not red.

I had no idea it was this deep (as it isn't)

Ineedaslap · 12/03/2023 18:26

Thanks all, been away for the weekend so just catching up.

As I said before, I realise now that it innocuous and nothing to worry about, yes I acknowledge I have jealousy issues and we are working through that.

Thanks again everyone, your insights have been very interesting.

Plenty of ❤ on my work Teams chats. People are based in different locations & some I have never met.

I ❤ the people that I have worked with in person in the past, more than the people that I have never met.

Nothing romantic

I work in a male dominated industry

All the Teams is recorded on the IT servers, so it has to be professional

The jokes have to be within the rules too

We have GIFs too

Cluelessfirstimer · 12/03/2023 21:06

My boss red hearts the messages I send to him all the time. He's 60, married, kids and the sweetest man ever. It's his way of saying thank you.

If the messages are innocent I wouldn't read any more into it.
