Red heart emoji on a teams work chat...

So, DH has been messaging a lass in his IT dept about some equipment he needs.

She has red hearted all his messages, and in his last message where he thanks her he has put a red heart emoji in the message.

I've seen the messages and they are innocuous, he says he has never spoken to her before but I am a bit aghast and annoyed at the red hearts.

He says I am being ridiculous and need to sort my jealousy issues out and that it means nothing.

But as someone who wouldn't use a red heart in a message to anyone other than DH then I am not so sure.

So people of Mumsnet, how would you have reacted to this?

Never ever ever use emojis at work. Ever.

With children, family and friends (including colleagues outside of work)… hell yes.

in work? No

Ha I'm with this!

This is how it works in my company

Nearly everything is red hearted in mine at the moment, cos we are so busy

lockedcupboard · 09/03/2023 17:46

I do this, just saying thanks, nothing more to it.

HaveTheDayOff · 09/03/2023 17:47

This is why I still insist on using fax.

Do you ever just have a laugh at work? Or do you just spend the whole day being the most professional professional ever?

CorsicaDreaming · 09/03/2023 17:49

I use hearts and emojis quite a bit on social stuff, but I think it's beyond naff and a bit childish on work stuff - and people seem to do it all the time at my place... the moving gifs are the worst. Really distracting- but I suspect I'm seen as very straight laced and serious at work... (or possibly even a grumpy bugger...) 😳

I doubt it's anything more than too many emojis with your DH - and once people start they feel they can't stop without looking standoffish and rude.

😂 I had to hunt down a fax machine the other day. It felt like an historical artefact.

Chias · 09/03/2023 17:50

It is so common now, it is definitely not something to get worked up about.

jellycakeandicecream · 09/03/2023 17:54

You can clearly see who and who doesn’t use Teams in this thread.

OP - you have nothing to worry about.

I use the red heart sarcastically sometimes.

"Thank you so much for sending me that 32 page assessment at 4pm that I need to complete by 5pm, shove this red heart up your arse"

Love this!

I am going to chuckle at every red heart at work I see from now on... and possibly start using them 🤣

If you press the smiley with the plus sign you can access all the emojis and respond with any, just so you know!

Yeah but that takes seconds 😄 and is a bit of a faff

But no one at work uses them. So would be odd if I started. Not that I remotely feel inclined to!

So was there no laughing or banter at your work before emojis came along? 😂

love that you think using emojis is the site fire sign for “having a laugh” at work.

by any chance are your initials DB?

I don’t just mean the emojis, your posts just make you sound a bit rigid about what you consider professional.

We’re talking about heart emojis 🤷‍♀️

He has massively disrespected you. Red flags everywhere. Secure your finances, and see a solicitor immediately and begin divorce proceedings. Can you change the locks tonight?

Quartz2208 · 09/03/2023 18:10

A lot of companies have email for the more professional stuff to outside contacts and then some form of chat/messenger such as slack/teams for internal communications that are suppose to be more informal. In them such emojis are used a lot particularly teams,

Daisyismynameorisnot · 09/03/2023 18:12

The red hearts are meaningless basically. The are used constantly and between male and female. In teams it literally is nothing.

ferneytorro · 09/03/2023 18:15

Alstothemarvshien · 09/03/2023 17:03

I definitely wouldn't like it. The red heart is reserved for romantic love. I thought everyone knew that?! Sending hearts to family and friends - always the other colours but not red.

Ooh this is interesting. My female married direct report has red hearted me a couple of times. I'm going to suggest we both leave our husbands and shack up together. And there was me thinking it was just appreciation for me being a decent manager. Wish me luck.

tootiredtospeak · 09/03/2023 18:15

There are loads on our work chat to men and women mainly love it if they've done you a favour

Lotsofthingstoconsider · 09/03/2023 18:22

Absolutely normal.. I have some significant caring issues which make me less than normally available atm.. my lovely colleagues are picking up the slack .. male and female.. they get a ❤️..you are massively overthinking.

Eh?

AncientBallerina · 09/03/2023 18:33

It’s mostly hearts where I work on Teams messages especially with younger colleagues. It expresses thanks/gratitude or else I am having emotional affairs with a lot of people I haven’t met. Im not young either and I did find it a bit odd when it started but I have learned form my teenagers that the thumbs up is a bit off although I do still use it with people who I know will be fine with it.
The relentless Teams messaging does my head in though so I have muted most of them anyway

whitesnowflake · 09/03/2023 18:33

I honestly wouldn't read anything into it. Red hearts are used a lot along with a range of other emojis on team chat.
