Lab created diamond

pocketvenuss · 02/01/2023 13:00

What do people think of lab created diamonds. They are the same molecular structure and are actual diamonds. Only specialist jewellers with specific devices that can allow the differences in the inclusions that indicate lab growth rather than natural.
Would you be happy with a lab grown diamond engagement ring?
On the plus side they are miles cheaper and conflict free. On the negative side, they are somehow not the same as a 'naturally created' diamond even though they are real diamonds.
But then again real diamond prices are artificially boosted by DeBeers.

Real and no one died in the process

BuffaloCauliflower · 02/01/2023 13:03

Yes I would. I wish I’d been more aware before getting my engagement ring

pursudebyablackdog · 02/01/2023 13:03

Far better for the environment. If you really want a mined diamond at least go for second hand. Personally lab created would be my choice.

Theimpossiblegirl · 02/01/2023 13:04

More ethical for a start.

CousinKrispy · 02/01/2023 13:05

They're a great idea!

HermioneWeasley · 02/01/2023 13:06

real diamonds are a complete rip off. The only thing is lab grown don’t keep any value after purchase. I’d consider moissanite which is cheaper

Damnautocorrect · 02/01/2023 13:09

have you seen the carbon captured diamonds? They look great value and you can give yourself a pat on the back

Yesthatismychildsigh · 02/01/2023 13:13

Something fake as a symbol of something so meaningful? No. And the same molecular structure or not, they’re fake. No blood diamonds either, though.

Startuplife · 02/01/2023 13:16

Yes, we’re not yet engaged but DP knows I would either like a lab diamond or a moissanite. Much better for the environment and miles more sparkle for your money.

Lcb123 · 02/01/2023 13:18

Yes I love my lab diamond engagement ring, I was so pleased to get that from now DH. Cheaper, much more ethical and environmental friendly. I couldn’t tell the difference, even my friends mum who is a jeweller couldn’t tell!

BadShepherd · 02/01/2023 13:19

Tbh I’m not a massive fan of having children’s limbs amputated just so I can sparkle - so yeh, man-made are fine.

BumbleNova · 02/01/2023 13:25

I have a beautiful lab grown sapphire and honestly I prefer it. It’s ethical and Beautiful

IntentionalError · 02/01/2023 13:44

There is so much mythology, folklore and bullshit surrounding diamonds, most of it created by De Beers’ marketing department. ‘A diamond is forever’ - De Beers marketing slogan. ‘A man should spend X months’ salary on a diamond engagement ring’ - De Beers marketing BS. Yet people have for decades unthinkingly & unquestioningly swallowed all this nonsense. Clever people, De Beers…
The reality is that diamonds are shiny bits of translucent rock. One manufactured (sorry, ‘created’) in a factory (sorry, ‘lab’) is exactly the same as one dug out of the ground.

Twillow · 02/01/2023 13:47

Perfectly acceptable. In fact better, no blood diamonds. Looks identical, costs less, what's the problem?

3peassuit · 02/01/2023 13:47

I have a pair of Lab created diamond studs. I can’t any difference in quality when I compare to the stone in my mined diamond engagement ring. I believe they test the same too.

XVII · 02/01/2023 13:53

Surely its how they look, not how are are made that counts.
if diamonds were sold at their true supply/demand value then they would cost a tenth of what they do today.
and mark up is minimum 100% and go to bond street or a posh jeweller and it can be 300-400%

Diamonds are one of the biggest cons out there!

Me too. I'd love one and I wish I'd been more aware before getting my engagement ring. I'd love to know 100% that it was conflict free. I don't want any blood to have been spilt to over my engagement ring.

Letitrainletitrainletitrain · 02/01/2023 14:00

My engagement ring is lab created because it's more ethical. If that hadn't been an option I would have gone for second hand/vintage jewellery

It's very difficult to avoid the slave trade/unethical practices in everything you buy no matter how hard you try (e.g. brands that say they are ethical sometimes end up in the news because they are actually using sweat shops etc), but when something is as easy as this it seems wrong not to

Moissanite has an even lower resale value though. And they don't look like diamonds irl up close. I think they are a step too far from a diamond. I guess I'm feeling like lab grown diamonds still feel 'real' and special. It's weird isn't it? It's all just perception. None of these are worth anything really!!

Are they different from 'lab grown diamonds'?

I believe so, there was a program on them. There’s a factory in london with large air intakes that capture the carbon and turn it into diamonds

overwork · 02/01/2023 15:43

I wouldn't consider a 'real' diamond - awful, unethical trade and no real way of establishing if the diamond you have purchased is part of it. Lab grown all the way here.
Can I ask why you are considering the resale value? Are you likely to sell it? Just because if you're not, then it does it really matter?

Sunnytwobridges · 02/01/2023 15:53

I love the "idea" behind how a natural diamond is created, however I'm completely against the ethics around how they are procured. Now that I know more about the diamond industry I definitely prefer a lab grown diamond over a mined one. I also wouldn't mind owning a second hand diamond, I love OEC and OMC diamonds and there are lots of second hand ones out there to choose from.

Oh I'm not considering resale. I was just responding to a comment

I would definitely go for a lab grown diamond over a mined one.
