Lab created diamond

What do people think of lab created diamonds. They are the same molecular structure and are actual diamonds. Only specialist jewellers with specific devices that can allow the differences in the inclusions that indicate lab growth rather than natural.
Would you be happy with a lab grown diamond engagement ring?
On the plus side they are miles cheaper and conflict free. On the negative side, they are somehow not the same as a 'naturally created' diamond even though they are real diamonds.
But then again real diamond prices are artificially boosted by DeBeers.

How do you get them out of the dog, though?

Open him up! 😂

Lab created diamond is a marketing term in itself. It's a fake. I don't know why you'd want to buy a fake of anything 'precious' the whole point which is marketed is the exclusivity. A designer bag isn't as special if everyone has one.

How is it a 'marketing term'. They are literally real diamonds created in a lab. They have crested conditions in a lab for actual diamonds to form. The term 'lab created diamond' is not a marketing term. It's a factual description

I have both and no-one can tell.

mrs55 · 04/01/2023 20:53

I have one it was a third of the price , it’s all marketing around diamonds it’s the romance of a stone grown over millions of years and then mined no one not even trained people can tell the difference under a microscope , diamonds unless you have an ultra rare coloured one don’t hold value at all.

Are Lab-Grown Diamonds Real Diamonds?
Chemically, physically, and optically, lab-grown diamonds are identical to natural ones. They're real diamonds with the same crystal structure and beautiful sparkle as natural diamonds. Lab-grown diamonds also have the same famous Mohs hardness of 100_.

I have only diamonds and I know which is the most important thing!

It's still not the same, sorry 😐

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/01/2023 02:39

It's still not the same

In every discernible (to you) way it is the same. Even to a jeweller without special equipment it's the same. What's missing is being ripped off. If you want to spend extra to be ripped off, you're a mug. De Beers did a number on you. Because natural ones aren't even rare. And it you want something unique formed by the earth, buy a fossil.

I used to work in the jewellery trade, so it's not the same to me amd I'm very happy to pay the extra 🤷🏼‍♀️

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/01/2023 02:58

But you literally couldn't tell them apart. Even if you worked in the trade.

But it's not the same to me, I don't really get why it's such an issue for you. I thought that was the whole point of this thread discussion? I have my opinion and you have yours

MrsTerryPratchett · 05/01/2023 03:13

Because I object to people happily marching off to line the pockets of greedy corporations just because they've been had by advertising.

There's something that looks, feels and chemically is the same. Plus it's cheaper, more ethical and better for the environment. But because it's 'not the same' in some ineffable way, shitty monopolies make more money. It's baffling to me.

And I'm sure everything you buy is organic and locally made 🙄

My point was I also wouldn't want a lab made diamond as that's just the same kind of marketing. I'd rather have a diamond or a CZ. Paying for an inbetween seems the worst of all 3.

VanillaSnap · 05/01/2023 17:15

@Mamaneedsadrink

Of course it's the same. It's exactly the same. The exact same product only with different production methods.

You might still choose to pay more for a mined diamond for reasons known to yourself, but that doesn't mean it's not the same.

It's like cooking a roast in the oven for 1.5 hours or in a Ninja foodie for 45 mins. Both are roasts. Both taste great.

Or like insisting on growing your own penicillin because it's natural and takes time, none of that lab created nonsense 🤣

DaphneFlower · 05/01/2023 22:18

My slow cooker casseroles are the genuine article. I wouldn't want pressure cooker fakery.

MrNorrell · 05/01/2023 22:24

Honestly, unless I knew it had been mined by an indentured child, it just wouldn't feel romantic at all.

And how will your children know you are passing a precious heirloom down to them unless someone else's child has suffered for it?

FlatOutLizzardDrinking · 15/01/2023 06:59

I've been tossing up between real or lab grown diamond earrings and having read this thread lab grown it is.
I've been looking at some sites mentioned by PP and the style of earrings I'm looking for are sometimes 10x the price of those sold typically at QVC such as these www.qvcuk.com/Diamonique-180ct-tw-Stud-Earrings-9ct-Gold.product.348690.html?sc=NAVLIST

My question is, how can I determine quality when the price varies so much? and there isn't the grading system as used on natural diamonds?

Cookerhood · 15/01/2023 08:26

I suspect there isn't a grading system because they are all perfect, but I'll be interested to hear the answer.

Bells3032 · 16/01/2023 00:27

@Cookerhood they are graded the same way as natural diamonds and should come with a grading certificate. Very few diamonds natural or lab grown are perfect as the compression of the carbon always produces unique flaws.

They are indeed graded. Both GIA and IGA certificate them. They aren't all perfect at all. Like all diamonds, they grow with inclusions and in a range of colours.
