Lab created diamond

What do people think of lab created diamonds. They are the same molecular structure and are actual diamonds. Only specialist jewellers with specific devices that can allow the differences in the inclusions that indicate lab growth rather than natural.
Would you be happy with a lab grown diamond engagement ring?
On the plus side they are miles cheaper and conflict free. On the negative side, they are somehow not the same as a 'naturally created' diamond even though they are real diamonds.
But then again real diamond prices are artificially boosted by DeBeers.

@Squamata 🤣🤣🤣

My engagement ring is moissanite and it's absolutely beautiful. It's ethical, environmentally friendly and enables me to have my fav design at probably a third of the cost. Don't care about resale value, it's staying on my finger forever (hopefully lol)

I have a pair of Lab created diamond studs. I can’t any difference in quality when I compare to the stone in my mined diamond engagement ring. I believe they test the same too.

Where did you buy them from? Any recommendations?

3peassuit · 02/01/2023 18:36

They were from Blue Nile.

Something fake as a symbol of something so meaningful? No. And the same molecular structure or not, they’re fake. No blood diamonds either, though.

My favourite and most meaningful ring, more than my engagement and wedding ring, is made from Cornish tin. Cheap as chips but I love it. It doesn’t have to be a mined diamond to meaningful.

ScarlettSunset · 02/01/2023 19:05

I have a lab created diamond engagement ring and I love it.
It was also considerably cheaper than a mined diamond ring and means we are able to have a bit extra towards other parts of our life together.

Bells3032 · 02/01/2023 19:05

I got one. It was significantly cheaper. I still got it at a reputable store and custom made it into a ring I loved...

Resale isn't really a factor. Reselling natural diamonds also results in a massive loss.

I saw it as the difference between an ivf baby and a nautrally conceived baby. They're both babies and they are the same once created.

Personally I wanted the real thing but it doesn't matter what anyone on MN thinks. I'd say the opinion of the receipt is the only one that counts :)

@TheShellBeach @blindfate

thank you so much for the links - I’ll have a browse tonight 😊

The only chemical difference between a lab grown diamond and a mined one is that the latter contains impurities. I'd be thinking would I prefer something impure, or something pure which is also cheaper?

Lab grown also have impurities. Just as with natural, they are graded from IF through to whatever. That's actually how one can tell the difference. Under high magnification the impurities are slightly different. The clean diamond parts are identical

I’d love one. Gorgeous, no guilt attached, less environmental damage. Cannot see a downside.

I don't understand the obsession with diamonds. It's all just advertising and image.

They are the hardest gemstone which is practical if you want a gemstone ring that you can wear daily

I’d absolutely prefer one. I looked into them when Dh and I were getting engaged (a million years ago) and they definitely would have been what I wanted if we were going to get a diamond. In the end, I decided I wanted something different, but it’s definitely the better way to go.

Opentooffers · 03/01/2023 00:53

My first instinct was no way, as diamonds are made by stars, so there's something extra special in that. But then I realised that the carbon used to make the diamonds in the lab would of been made by stars too as all elements are, so not a good enough reason not to.

Cas112 · 03/01/2023 00:54

Ye wouldn't bother me

We're made of stars. All of us.

LankylegsFromOz · 03/01/2023 02:26

If I had my time again, I would opt for the lab diamond. Unfortunately they weren't really a thing when I got engaged, nor as socially acceptable/preferable.

I just love this. All of it.😍

When I take the physical item itself I don't actually like diamonds other than being able to show off which i have no desire to do I don't genuinely like them as an item

I am interested in stories about them like on antiques roads how but there are other jewels I think are more interesting

alittleadvicepls · 03/01/2023 04:30

I have a moissanite, a lab diamond and a natural diamond I picked up from an antique shop.

I wasn’t a fan of the moissanite and thought it got dirty quite easily. Needed weekly cleaning to keep the sparkle.

I then got a lab round cut and it’s soooo nice. I got it from Brilliant Earth. It’s fab and I always get so many compliments on it. Ultimately decided I didn’t want a round diamond so after 2 years of drooling over a pear cut from a local antique shop I decided to just go for it. My pear is what I wear everyday and is a mined diamond. Honestly no different to my round lab created diamond though. Looks the same with the same sparkle.

Elspethelf · 03/01/2023 04:37

Lab grown was my preference for the reasons you mentioned. My ring is beautiful :)

warofthemonstertrucks · 03/01/2023 05:18

My engagement ring is lab diamonds. I love it, and no one would be able to tell any difference between it and a mined one. It was about 2k cheaper than a mined one and no one died to get it.

We bought it in Hatton garden. Experience the same as buying a 'real' one. I don't understand why anyone *wouldnt get a lab diamond tbh...

Dustyblue · 03/01/2023 05:29

Totally agree with the 'lab-grown' crowd. If the only way to tell the difference is under high magnification with specialist machinery, then why on earth believe that the mined ones are somehow better.

Here in Oz, the most amazing pink diamonds were mined for years in WA (although I think they've run out now? Could be wrong). The toll on the land, the FIFO workers living under pretty terrible conditions whilst one Gina Rinehardt made billions.... that's more than enough for me.

Startwithamimosa · 03/01/2023 05:33

I don't like it, a real diamond been created over millions of years. Of course it's all marketing anyway, but if I were to get one, I want the real deal

That millions of years has likely ended with an unethical mining process with at best hugely underpaid workers in dangerous conditions and at worst victims of forced labour, beatings and murder.

Then there's the environmental impact. Mineral resource exploitation also causes deforestation, soil disturbance, air emissions, surface water pollution and groundwater contamination.

I just can't imagine wanting to wear all that blood on my hands when a lab grown alternative is almost exactly the same in appearance but free of the unethical, sometimes lethal supply chain.
