feckin conspiracy theories

Has anyone managed to change someone's mind about misinformation, conspiracy theories - all the stuff that's caused so many problems in relationships over the past few years?

Has any media made a decent programme explaining how this happens to people? If there is, I could show it to "people".

I find it absolutely enraging that I can't change people's minds. AITA?

Examples can be provided.

Yes. Conspiracy theorists are caught in a belief system. It is a matter of belief and faith, not fact or rationality. Their 'god' is a mysterious cabal who are secretly manipulating events on a global scale. Those who 'know' about this are the special, chosen Enlightened Ones.

It is however a religion more on a par with a cult, Scientology or Jehovah's Witnesses or other radical, proselytising religions.

Like all of these, there is extreme danger to those who are children as well as other vulnerable for whatever reason adults who cannot escape from these beliefs.

Could it then be debated that, all religion and conspiracies should be limited ?

What's the difference between a religion and a conspiracy theory? They seem quite similar to me.

I guess religion is always faith, where as conspiracy theories from time to time actually get confirmed as true.

@thisisbig I'm sure it is crackers but you aren't alone. What got me thinking was my perceived lack of governance and management of bigger issues. It seems to be that the country is being run like a business that knows its going into liquidation like just ticking over. No one can be bothered and Sunak is spending his time talking about cracking down on laughing gas!
I even googled and searched about asteroids etc!
I'm not a nut job either, it feels very odd in the world at the moment and maybe it's unsettling us too much.
But I am reassured that I don't think any government could hide a secret like that.
The sun is fine it has solar flares and sun spots all the time.

One of my socks has disappeared in the wash. The price of cheese in my local supermarket has soared. Very suspicious. Is Bill Gates up to something? 🤔

there's a guy called Steven Hassan and he has an instagram called Cult Expert as well as some books. He seems really legit and has lots of good info specifically about helping brainwashed people that are hooked on conspiracy theories. Have a look!

goldenotter · 29/03/2023 17:34

here's the instagram. I think he has a good website and some YT videos too

@NeverDropYourMooncup quite a fascinating take, and might describe a particular group of conspiracy theorists that have been in the game for a while, however since the pandemic the profile of a conspiracy theorist has changed. I personally don't trust the UK government on many things, for many reasons, and I don't believe the vaccines should have been rolled out to the worlds population, aside from those of a certain age, those with comorbidities and the clinically vulnerable. I have had countless discourse with folks on here about it. My stance comes from evidence I have seen presented by many brilliant & qualified professionals. They're not views I pick up from random people and debatable sources splashed across social media.

As far as other CT go, I've never had the tiniest interest to even uncover what they are and I don't find them remotely interesting, neither flat earth, 9/11, 5G, lizard royal family or any of the other popular ones. I struggle to listen to David Icke, and find myself perplexed by him.

I think I know one real conspiracy theorist in person, and I share no beliefs with him other than finding similar holes in the pandemic.

You think you have everyone figured out in that long drawn out example earlier. But you don't. There are real, normal people who are justifiably sceptical about what happened the past 3 years, people from all walks of life, across the globe and the majority probably are not anti vaxxers or CTs. How are you that bold to think you know it all? It's wild.

The social experiment I think it’s called is good. Shows you how social media makes it easier for people to be radicalised.

Greycloudlooming · 31/03/2023 08:57

You can’t argue with stupid.
I just now view people who believe in conspiracy theories as someone with a different opinion.

Having said that, there have been a handful of wild conspiracy theories that turned out to be true, like American gvt feeding people LSD unaware.

The thing is, even if they were true, there’s absolutely nothing any of us could do anyway. So they’re not even worth the energy to focus on.

It did turn out that the vaccine thing wasn't as cut and dried as a lot of us thought.

My best friend is clinically extremely vulnerable and people in his unit are being told by the consultant that the vaccines aren't actually all that good.

A lot of people have long term negative effects of various kinds from the vaccines.

This is true. But the vaccines were made in haste to save lives. Of course there were glitches. I had a rotten reaction to astrazenica on my arm. There were people that died. But they were vaccines and not part of a world government to control us.
