Do sun tans actually look sexy ?

My bf is blond and has super fair skin and gets cooked within minutes in the sun.
We were at the beach yesterday and he was literally covered in sun tan lotion and had his bucket hat and sun glasses.
His skin from the top side on his arms turns a light brown colour and the same with his face apart from where he wears his sunglasses. It looks horrible like he's been inside a burning building. He suffers hugely from painful blisters and burns.
I think it's damaging being in the sun for so long. I've had boils on my back .
Why on earth do People go for sun tans? Or say let's go to the beach on a really hot day?

Dp just literally goes dark brown, like a Teak color. Her sister tans to dark Walnut color. I'm in between Cherry and Mahogany.
Personally, I look tired and older without a bit of color. Dp's legs are very sexy when tanned.😂

Silverswirl · 11/07/2022 10:28

Younger people especially look great with a slight tan. Older people, it can look a bit leathery (I class myself as older now so have to be careful not to get too tanned)
ovbiously if you just go red then no, that’s not great but a couple of my children never ever go red. Just a lovely bronze colour and it looks amazing.

I think people look better/healthier with sun tans but I'm also aware that this is down to good marketing after Coco Chanel started the teens on the 1920s. Because of her tans became associated with a rich lifestyle and people started copying her.
Up to then people made an effort to stay out of the sun because tans were associated with "the poor" who worked outside.

If famous people started promoting the pale look more, we'd all start eschewing tans in a flash, instead of commenting about how unhealthy they look, and are they ill etc.

IsadoraQuagmire · 11/07/2022 10:38

I think suntans are very unattractive as well as being (obviously) unhealthy.
I like to stay as pale as possible.

drlel · 11/07/2022 10:40

I feel so much more confident and sexy with a tan and find tanned men more physically attractive. But I get mine from a bottle 😂

Recently back from a week in Spain and I can home paler than I left after a week in the shade and booked straight in for a spray tan.

Youngatheart00 · 11/07/2022 10:41

I think so yes, but sun burn is not

TwilightSkies · 11/07/2022 10:45

I think tans look nice and healthy. I always feel much better with a bit of a glow. Mine mostly comes from a bottle though.

Superduperwooper · 11/07/2022 10:45

Same with anything, good tans look good. But a neopolitan suntan or orange fake tan does not.

shivawn · 11/07/2022 10:47

Yes I think that most people look far more attractive with a tan.

ethelredonagoodday · 11/07/2022 10:48

A light tan looks nice I think but being absolutely sizzled doesn't.

It's so bad for your skin too. Couple of my friends who were/are sun worshippers are starting to look older now as you can't turn back the clock on the damage sun does to your skin.

WimpoleHat · 11/07/2022 10:49

It looks good on younger people; middle aged/older people get that leathery/weatherbeaten look that’s really not good.

Not in my opinion. I think whatever your natural skin colour is, is what looks best. It just looks unhealthy to me now and all I can think is how long they laid out in it to look like that. I stay out of it unless I can't avoid it and I am pale. I am happy with that.

LuckyAmy1986 · 11/07/2022 10:52

@IsadoraQuagmire sorry I didn't to quote you there! Seems like we have a similar opinion and I've told you 'not in my opinion!'

abigailsnan · 11/07/2022 10:52

I have a spray tan before I go way so I feel confident those first few days by the pool I do however keep in the shade as much as possible as I'm very aware of the skin cancer problems which may occur.
Being tanned gives you a feeling of wellbeing I think as long as you don't over do it and cover up well.

Haha, yes we do. Mind you, a lot of fake tans can look even worse, I've seen some very unrealistic looking orange legs lately! Still, at least, that's better than damaging your skin to get a colour.

SunnyKlara · 11/07/2022 11:00

Tans aren't necessarily unhealthy. Over exposure to the sun is unhealthy.

My family are olive skinned and we merely need to be out and about for 10mins in sun like we have now to tan. We still use suncream and don't sit out in it when it is strong.

But yes, a tan is sexy to me. But that means brown or golden. Not pink. Or brown with a red undertone

chiffchaffchiff · 11/07/2022 11:03

Depends on the person. Some people look good with a m bit of a tan. Some people tan too much and it looks a bit odd with their hair colour and eye colour. Some people just burn and end up with dry flaky skin that doesn't look good at all. I get covered in freckles and look like I need to wash my face. A quick morning coffee in the garden leaves my chest bright red for days. I don't leave the house without sunscreen on my face and chest, even in the depths of winter.

I'm more maple with an oaky grain and knots like pine. Sad

Surely it just depends on your skin to begin with? I have family that are super pale, they don’t really tan, their skin looks fine with out one. Me on the other hand, I just glance at the sun and I tan, even with lotion on, which I do use. I don’t have to lay out for hours, just live life in the sun. I know I prefer my skin tanned, but other people look lovely with whiter skin.

FYI I’ve never in my life experienced blisters or burning like you describe, that’s not how my skin reacts and I use lotion as well. Not everyone burns like that under the sun. If I did, like the rest of my family I would probably avoid the sun as well!

Interesting how different perception can be - I personally find older women with a moderate tan often look like they’ve travelled a lot and lived their life to the fullest 🙂

CharlotteRose90 · 11/07/2022 11:11

I’ve got typical Irish skin so I burn in places and tan in others. I think tans suit people. I feel awful when I’m pasty white. Always get asked if I’m feeling ok when I’m pale too. As long as your sensible on the beach you can tan properly.

Hrpuffnstuff1 · 11/07/2022 11:13

There was a young Scottish couple by the pool and they both looked like raw salmon. Get under the brolly you fools.
We both use factor 50, and a brolly.
I find for a man it highlights the contours better, especially if they go to the gym. Even beer bellies don't look as offensive.😂

PicturesOfDogs · 11/07/2022 11:16

I’m very pale naturally, but can tan.
a lot of time I’ll use fake tan, as I makes me feel more confident, I’ve had many disparaging remarks over the years about how pale my legs are.

I’ve noticed when I have a tan (fake or real) people tend to comment that I look ‘well’ whereas if I don’t have my tan, I tend to get told I look ‘tired’

SommerTen · 11/07/2022 11:18

I look better with a tan but yesterday when putting on shorts I discovered a mole on my inner thigh that has doubled in size since it first appeared when I got sunburned in Mykonos in 2014 despite wearing spf30... which was then the hottest place I'd ever been to.

I've seen the dr with it in 2020 when it first appeared and he said come back if it changes. So I guess I will have to make an appointment :(

Stay safe and appreciate your natural skin colour!!

liveforsummer · 11/07/2022 11:21

I've never had a blister or boil. Maybe a hint of pink after a long day that's gone by the morning at worst. Can spend hours in the sun and not come anywhere close to how you describe and I definitely look healthier with a bit of colour. By late winter I'm an unattractive greige.
