Do sun tans actually look sexy ?

My bf is blond and has super fair skin and gets cooked within minutes in the sun.
We were at the beach yesterday and he was literally covered in sun tan lotion and had his bucket hat and sun glasses.
His skin from the top side on his arms turns a light brown colour and the same with his face apart from where he wears his sunglasses. It looks horrible like he's been inside a burning building. He suffers hugely from painful blisters and burns.
I think it's damaging being in the sun for so long. I've had boils on my back .
Why on earth do People go for sun tans? Or say let's go to the beach on a really hot day?

I am very very pale and would say that a tan is more attractive to most people. I wear lots of sun cream and stay in the shade because I burn so easily but people always make negative comments about my pale skin. It used to bother me but I couldn’t care less anymore, no I’m not covering up my legs just because they’re pale. I once burnt so badly my shoulders all blistered and it was so painful, I learnt my lesson that day.

I used to tan quite dark but after a few dodgy mole removals I've always stayed in the shade in factor 50 sunscreen. That being said, I feel a lot more confident with some colour. Australian glow tan mousse is my go to and reckon it looks very similar to the colour I used to tan naturally. Each to their own

*All the people who are saying that all tans are dangerous: you do realise that people with tanned skin live longer than people without don't you? It makes you look healthier because it makes you healthier.

Enough sun exposure to give you light tan without burning significantly reduces your risk of fatal cancers and heart disease.

Burning however has nothing whatsoever to be said in its favour, hurts, can kill you, and is far from sexy.

do you have any other studies to back this up? That study is from 2016 and there’s no follow up- the authors admit the reason sunbathers live longer is unknown and they haven’t adjusted for bias, it could simply be those who tan live a more active, generally healthier lifestyle.

I literally can’t be bothered to sunbathe and don’t have the time to faff with fake stuff so I’m pale and probably look Ill. I wouldn’t want to cook to the point I’m red and blistered and I’m sure that’s terrible for your skin, I tend to wear spf on my face and avoid hottest parts of the day as I just look a sweaty mess. Spring is more my season tbh never really been into beach holidays.

It is really funny how people who cannot tan well as they have pale skin, think (on here, at least) that people with a tan look trashy.
What about people who work with animals, agriculture etc who, even if they use maximum protection, will apparently always look trashy.
I rarely sunbathe and actively avoid the sun during the day (I live in Portugal) but I play tennis in the mornings 4 times a week so I guess I must be trashy as well!
(tan only goes mid thigh where my shorts finish so I may be only be half trashy in that case ...)

I am pale and burn easily. I am a suncream in the British sun kind of person. I do look better with a light tan and I have been trying to get one.

A PP mentioned something about the colour of a tan and the reddish brown ones not looking good-nobody gets to choose what colour they go and my tan when I have one has reddish undertones, it’s not burn it’s just the colour I go.

i do think most people look better with a sunkissed glow, I am not overly fond of the fake tan look though and I don’t think orange skin looks good on anyone 😂

I'm a sallow skinned blonde and look much better tanned. Lovely golden colour instead of yellowish, hair looks blonder, eyes bluer, teeth whiter. DP is similar colouring and looks better tanned too. I don't think everyone does, but I think it lifts most blonds.

Dimondsareforever · 12/07/2022 22:14

I am very pale and burn just by looking at a sunny forecast….. so I fake tan and fell so much better when I have some colour on my body. so unfortunately, I think it does look better. But fake is the way to go!

I also love going abroad on holiday; but I do sit under an umbrella with my factor 50!

I don't find tanned skin any more sexy than pale. It's just skin colour.
Nice skin that has been looked after.

yep.

as I kid I always wondered why racism existed when white people always seemed to think they looked better with brown skin.

Darker skin always seems softer and when I have a tan, my skin is softer. I moisturise all year round and have since a young age so it can’t be that.

i’m the other way. The skin on my arms that’s exposed to the sun is dry and has those fine age crinkles. The skin on my legs which isn’t is still white, and a lot less dry and wrinkly.

astorsback · 13/07/2022 21:05

Yes, most people look better with a moderate tan, unless very pale/fair/red.

I'm naturally light toned with blonde hair and blue eyes so only go golden, never brown.

I do envy darker people who go a lovely chestnut colour. Even fat or old skin looks better with a golden tone IMO!

AffIt · 13/07/2022 21:50

I have that very specific Celtic colouring of dark hair, grey eyes and skin that's so white it's practically pale blue. I can get burned looking out of a window on a sunny day.

I learned to embrace my colouring in my mid-20s and, thanks to long sleeves, hats, shades and high-factor sunscreen, look a lot younger than many of my peers in my early 40s.

JenniferWooley · 13/07/2022 21:54

I wouldn't know if I look better with a tan or not - I don't tan in the sun & being ginger I'd look daft with a fake tan so have never bothered.

All 3 DC take a lovely tan, even DD2 who is practically blue during the winter months.

I agree a light tan looks healthy but I'll stick to being pale & interesting Grin

5128gap · 14/07/2022 07:28

I think when people look way better tanned it's because it's created a contrast that wasn't there before. If you have some shades of blonde, mouse, or light brown hair, and pale skin, you can look a bit washed out. If you have stronger hair colour, the contrast with paler skin looks very nice.
