Do sun tans actually look sexy ?

My bf is blond and has super fair skin and gets cooked within minutes in the sun.
We were at the beach yesterday and he was literally covered in sun tan lotion and had his bucket hat and sun glasses.
His skin from the top side on his arms turns a light brown colour and the same with his face apart from where he wears his sunglasses. It looks horrible like he's been inside a burning building. He suffers hugely from painful blisters and burns.
I think it's damaging being in the sun for so long. I've had boils on my back .
Why on earth do People go for sun tans? Or say let's go to the beach on a really hot day?

Also you're wondering why people choose to go to the beach on a really hot day but you chose to go to the beach on a really hot day? Tbh even i avoided it yesterday!

DramaAlpaca · 11/07/2022 11:23

I can't tan whatever I do, I'm naturally pale so have learned to just embrace it. I've had all the comments and I no longer care.

DH and two of our boys have skin so pale it's translucent. The other one goes a lovely golden colour.

AdoraBell · 11/07/2022 11:25

I feel much better with a tan. Unfortunately I burn easily, my later DF was a red head- think carrot orange- and used to blister in the sun. I now have solar keratosis and have to avoid UV light like the plague, despite always using sunblock and seekjng shade in the middle of the day.

JellyBellyNelly · 11/07/2022 11:25

A light natural tan is very sexy.

anything that comes out of a bottle or a spray gun isn’t.

EcoEcoIA · 11/07/2022 11:25

David Dickinson?

LunaTheCat · 11/07/2022 11:26

There is nothing less sexy than a big scar from a melanoma - the only safe tan is from a bottle .

Palamon · 11/07/2022 11:28

My husband goes a gorgeous colour, and never gets freckles or sun spots. He’s tanned within minutes of sun exposure.

I’m the complete opposite. I never go outside without factor 50 and I will only sit in complete shade. I wear factor 50 on my face, chest and hands all year round. If I want a tan, it’s a fake one.

i have a couple of female friends that love to sunbathe. They’re both in their 40s, but wrinkly. It does your skin no favours.

SecretVictoria · 11/07/2022 11:28

I look far better with a tan. I’m so pale I’m blue/reflective 😔. Fake tans look shit though; always way too orange and however professionally they’ve been done, you can always tell on hands/feet/wrists/ankles. And they smell awful.

I used to go on sun beds all the time and the only reason I don’t now is that I CBA to keep getting dressed/undressed/dressed. I know they’re bad but I just look so much better for it. I’m also allergic to most fake tans - had one for my friends wedding 10 years ago and ended up with severe eczema for a year.

doadeer · 11/07/2022 11:42

Darker skin is more forgiving. When I have a fake tan I look slimmer and you can't see all the veins and marks on my legs. It is more flattering.

NottheLot · 11/07/2022 11:45

I have never thought tans look nice, and never understood the appeal.

MotherOfPuffling · 11/07/2022 11:47

I have skin that is Celtic pale with a hint of spam - that awful blotchy red/purple! Plus thread veins and many, many moles, plus a family history of skin cancer. I’m sure a tan would look better as it would hide the veins and mute the spam, but the only way it would happen is out of a bottle so I just live with it, as I am rubbish at fake tan, it always goes blotchy and streaky. I wouldn’t risk sitting out in the sun or not wearing high factor spf, as have already had to have several dodgy miles removed and don’t want to risk cancer.

NottheLot · 11/07/2022 11:47

and I’m 50, and I can tell you that the suntan fans do not age well.

so glad I never fell for all the hype about them!

2bazookas · 11/07/2022 11:54

Heartlock, if your BF regularly burns to blisters he risks developing skin cancer. Malignant melanoma skin cancer is potentially deadly (and fast) even in young people. Climate change is causing a rapid increase in skin cancers.

MinorWomensWhiplash1 · 11/07/2022 12:56

A light tan suits some people but I find something really beautiful about very pale skin contrasted with dark hair or red hair, on both men and women.

LadyFlumpalot · 11/07/2022 12:57

I'm paler than skimmed milk and I like to stay that way. It may not look as good as a tan, but it's a lot sexier looking than skin cancer and the scars from having melanomas removed.

Cas112 · 11/07/2022 13:00

You sound like your talking about sunburn, not a suntan

Sun tans can give you a nice glow, hence why some people might think its more attractive

SandieCollins · 11/07/2022 13:02

I love the look of a tan on people, not fake tan but been outdoors and in nature type tan.

obviously if you know you don’t tan or burn you have to be very careful but if you have olive skin to start with it usually only takes a quick walk in the sun to catch it.

gwenneh · 11/07/2022 13:04

Not really. Good skin looks sexy, whether it's tanned or pale.

MissusPongo · 11/07/2022 13:08

Why on earth do People go for sun tans? Or say let's go to the beach on a really hot day?

I think we Brits need to up our beach game. In countries where they regularly have high temperatures, the locals tend to go to the beach early in the morning or later afternoon, when it's actually pleasant to be there and the sun is not so strong. Brits are used to the idea of British beaches as being a bit cold and windy, sand-in-your-sandwiches sort of thing, so we don't worry enough about the midday sun. If it's hot enough, you can burn however much cream you have on.

As for sexiness- a bit of a light tan looks good especially the sort that looks like it came from outdoorsiness rather than deliberate tanning. Being burned is not sexy. If you are experiencing blisters and boils you have seriously damaged your skin.

ComDummings · 11/07/2022 13:13

I think most people regardless of their natural tone look better with a tan. Fake tan looks awful and has orange undertones. Very pale people like myself may struggle with a red toned tan that doesn’t look that great at first and I don’t mean burn. But other than that a nice tan looks good.

ComDummings · 11/07/2022 13:16

However just to add - I personally avoid the sun completely. Even with good high spf I don’t feel comfortable so cover with long sleeves and dresses. I would love a tan but the risk isn’t worth it to me.

Surely it just depends on your skin to begin with? I have family that are super pale, they don’t really tan, their skin looks fine with out one. Me on the other hand, I just glance at the sun and I tan, even with lotion on, which I do use. I don’t have to lay out for hours, just live life in the sun. I know I prefer my skin tanned, but other people look lovely with whiter skin.

FYI I’ve never in my life experienced blisters or burning like you describe, that’s not how my skin reacts and I use lotion as well. Not everyone burns like that under the sun. If I did, like the rest of my family I would probably avoid the sun as well!

I agree! Us three all tan easily despite using a lot of sun protection and a high factor, whereas DD's best friend & her sisters just always look pale and maybe get a few freckles and a slight tan.

We never sunbathe, our tans .come from just being out & about walking/cycling/playing etc

Whoatealltheminieggs · 11/07/2022 13:19

People look thinner, clothes and eyes look brighter. I don’t tan so I have to fake it. Sometimes I do it badly but it’s still better than looking very white.

ChimChimeny · 11/07/2022 13:20

My in-laws are sunbathers and it definitely ages them, MIL's neck and chest really shows her age & they have that leathery look

LoveBugBride · 11/07/2022 13:22

Surely it depends on your natural skin tone. I have olive skin and tan easily even with suncream on. It looks natural on me. My sister is pale and freckly and her creamy skin tone looks lovely on her.
