DH and Glastonbury

Bobthecatnapper · 18/06/2022 22:43

DH was invited to Glastonbury this week by a male work colleague and his wife who apparently have one of these 2 bedroom glamping accommodations at the festival. I asked if I could go with him and he said that he wanted to take his mate (will call him G.) I know G and he has recently split with his wife, very upset about it all, a bit lonely and has apparently "always wanted to go to Glastonbury." OK.

Fast forward to tonight, DH announces he is actually travelling down to Glastonbury on Wednesday and will "work from the festival" until the weekend. I went on the website and while it lists 22nd June as a start date (Wednesday) nothing actually starts until Friday.

I am suspicious about all of it, as DH has some form. Can any Glastonbury expert tell me whether people go on the wednesday to "work from the festival?"

My thinking is that he bought tickets when they went on sale and the “so and so has dropped out” is a story he’s telling you.

whenever I’ve been to Glastonbury we’ve always got there on the Wednesday. We have to fly in so while spendy to go (flights tickets etc) it made sense to go for as long as we could.

no way would I be working there. I’d get too distracted!

This is likely the real truth behind his story, or at least the best case scenario. Can you ask him to show you the ticket?

Yes but don’t forget @PollyIndia that people who’ve been once or twice know FAR more about it than those who have local or corporate links 😉.

The OP says nothing whatsoever about his mates being either local or having industry links, if that was the case he’d be saying that wouldn’t he.

My reading of 'invited my a work colleague' was that there was a work link to getting the tickets. Companies can apply to Glastonbury to buy hospitality tickets, and if they give a good enough story and are vaguely in the right industry, they will get a list.

But who knows, I certainly don't know if he is telling the truth, and nor does anyone else, I'm just saying the story is completely plausible. However obviously I'd be really pissed off if I was OP and he didn't give me the second ticket!

watcherintherye · 19/06/2022 10:11

Why don’t you ask him about how the friend managed to sort them tickets? Say you thought they were like gold dust and non-transferable with photo id. Come back and tell us what he says. There’s bound to be someone on here who can say whether it’s bs or not! Maybe the friend has friends in high places…

vera99 · 19/06/2022 10:11

Crew tickets are all photo IDs as well - as far as I know, all entrants are photo-ided no exception and are not transferable. The only stories about getting in without a ticket are security smuggling in folk in vans for big money or so the rumour goes a few years back.

How can people come on here and make such broad statements like he’s a LIAR?? Honestly from the info given how can you KNOW that? These are real people — such shit stirrers on here sometimes Jesus Christ. Stop projecting. It’s normal to go a few days earlier for a festival.

Erm, based on the OP who said her DH has got a habit of lying about his whereabouts?

vera99 · 19/06/2022 10:22

These guys are either a scam or use backdoor industry channels to get VIP tickets. I imagine packages would start around 10k + for such things. I know the tobacco kiosk in the naughty quarter pays £6 million for a 5-year contract for one booth as they regard the marketing potential as one worth paying. Orange paid £5 million for their big tent but isn't allowed to put the corporate name on it. Michael and the team take the money to help to subsidise the festival and help the charities involved. It costs over £250 million quid to put on.

I have always gone on the Wednesday so thats fine OP but there is no way he has a ticket unless he applied via the ballot. You cannot transfer or use someone else's ticket.

Bootothegoose · 19/06/2022 10:23

Yes there's always early bird access.

Whenever I went to festivals (fucking YONKS ago) we always went for the full week.

ShandaLear · 19/06/2022 10:27

Are you sure he’s not off to a Premier Inn for a dirty weekend with Debbie from Accounts?

vera99 · 19/06/2022 10:29

Looks like there may be a grey market probably done with tacit acceptance from GFL to help subsidise some of the teams working in various areas. These will be industry team passes sold on with huge markups so rich punters who want a backdoor entrance.

Anyone can get in on Wednesday with a ticket. My friends are getting in Wed morning. Not sure how much work he'll get done though. Wheres he going to set up - in his tent?

Tadaaaaaaaaa · 19/06/2022 10:41

Also not all tickets have photos. Mine doesn't.it depends where he got it from

Tadaaaaaaaaa · 19/06/2022 10:42

Crew tickets don't all have photos - mine doesn't! Just my name.

illnevertell · 19/06/2022 10:43

Shortpoet · 19/06/2022 10:05

So it’s either:

A) he’s telling the truth. His mate has two transferable tickets (maybe VIP, music crew, or hospitality). In which case he’s chosen his friend rather than you. And he’s either lying to work about working from there, or is naive enough to think he can work from there, or he’s booked the time off work and is lying about that

B) He’s lying to you as he booked tickets either in 2919, or on resale and is pretending that they are only just available

C) He’s not going to Glastonbury at all (hence the lie about luxury accommodation as you’d wonder about tents and sleeping bags. Him and his mate are going on a lads holiday together somewhere else, or he’s not going with friend and is going somewhere else with another person

C sounds plausible. OP, check his emails.

Nor mine.
and sure you can google and find the hospitality tickets with an insane markup but face value is £550+vat.

vera99 · 19/06/2022 10:44

But with crew or at least as far as recycling goes, I have a letter and a parking pass. When we swap for wristbands they check our photos on their database.

CrumpetStrumpet · 19/06/2022 10:49

People do go that early.

Choosing to take a mate over you is absolutely awful of him though.

Tadaaaaaaaaa · 19/06/2022 10:51

@vera99 maybe some crew but not all. I've never given them my photo and they just swap ticket for wristband. They can change crew names very last minute too.

mmgirish · 19/06/2022 10:51

I've been to Glasto twice. Both times we went on the Wednesday. I can't imagine working though? Where would he work from? One thing I would ask him though - when did he buy tickets? The tickets have your name on them from when you buy them months in advance. You have to show ID to match the name on your ticket.

vera99 · 19/06/2022 10:57

@Tadaaaaaaaaa that's probably how those mega bucks back door tickets get sold. The rich punters are wristbanded as 'crew' with no need for photo-id. The ones I highlighted are in the John Peel backstage area.

I read "traveling down" as meaning "not local" and out of the area for the local access schemes and "work colleague" as someone from work.

Multiple pps have mentioned the difference between VIP/hospitality tickets and were clear to say its regular tickets which are not transferable. Since the OP has not mentioned hospitality in their responses I made the opposite reading - that its likely to be regular ticket.

If the OP came back now and announced it was a hospitality ticket that would be an impressive drip feed. I guess we wait and see.

dianthus101 · 19/06/2022 11:04

I am sceptical that he's got last minute tickets or that he will be able to work. The most likely explanation is that he bought these tickets when they went on sale months ago and didn't tell you. He has probably booked annual leave too. (My DH has “form” for that kind of thing).

Tadaaaaaaaaa · 19/06/2022 11:17

@vera99 yes possibly. I only know people who've sold them to friends of friends for not very much money, but I'm sure some people are making a lot more in other places.

NonagonInfinityOpensTheDoor · 19/06/2022 11:23

I don’t think it is helpful to give OP false info when you don’t have the full story.

My reading of 'invited my a work colleague' was that there was a work link to getting the tickets.

Its not helpful to create your own narrative either is it? Too busy playing Glastonbury billy big bollocks to think for a minute though

Nikses · 19/06/2022 11:27

Let him go, you can’t control what he will or won’t do. Would you want to? Glasto camping does start early and is an amazing experience, let him know you want him to have a great time…….and that next time you’d be up for going. If he’s going for a dirty weekend elsewhere he’s going to struggle to hide that. You don’t own him and he’s allowed a life outside of you, just as you are away from him too. Try not to overthink it and cause yourself sleepless nights “worry is money paid for a debt you may never owe” xxx
