Do you think having cats is a relationship dealbreaker/guys would find it weird? And how many cats is too many cats?

@Pearlyqueen21

Nothing to add to this (my DH would be keen to get more than the 2 cats we have, but I’m sticking with 2), but you might enjoy this song from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend NSFW Wink Basically, you should choose your partner according to their ability to love your cats! It’s definitely a good sign if they’re pro-pet 👍
Thank you so much for this 😂😂😂

As a bloke with 3 of my own and most of my adult life spent volunteering with Cats Protection, not much of a deal breaker for me (and for many men that I know with cats) - providing of course looked after properly.

So things like indoor only cats, where it isn't for medical reasons, is a problem for me (fine if they choose not to go out despite having access of course - that's the cat's choice).

Breed cats (unless rescues) are also problematic for me as I find the breeding of animals to specific artificial standards for human pleasure pretty repugnant, and would struggle with anyone who chose to buy one and thereby support the trade.

Strangely, as someone who has been starting to dip their toe into the swampy morass of OLD for the first time ever, I have been somewhat surprised by what I have seen. Very, very few women mention cats in their profiles, but many mention dogs. Given that it's extraordinarily unlikely that only non-cat owned women are finding themselves in their fourties and single, I can only assume that there is a mass assumption that men like dogs and hate cats, so (think Basil Fawlty here, 'Don't mention the cats'... Personally I would think it would be a great filtering mechanism, so please put the cats in your profiles!

Obligatory cat pics inserted... (Wriggly Don cat is the black and white, who has just left me covered in white hair following his morning cuddle).

@WrigglyDonCat Ah yes, that too of course. Anyone who doesn't neuter, or who deliberately breeds their cats, as well as, maybe, someone who would always buy pedigrees rather than rescue (although I may let that slide and would be on a mission to 'educate':) ) would be a dealbreaker for me, as our values would be diametrically opposed.

I once went on a date with someone and he told me he had an unneutered pedigree female cat. I told him I wouldn't be going on another date with him unless he got her neutered and could prove it to me. And he did it! I then felt obliged to then go on another date, but decided he wasn't for me and that was that. At least I managed to get another cat neutered:)

My DH wasn’t keen on having a pet cat when he met me, but he had no choice when he met me as I already had one. He found out that he wasn’t allergic as he had thought (though he is allergic to dogs) and also that homes with cats don’t necessarily smell bad.

Now we have 3 furry friends and one of them in particular follows him around. Grin

Obligatory cat pics now!

I know someone who has 4 cats

She's mid 30s with no relationship success - not sure if the cats have hindered anything but she is a right fucking weirdo so 🤷‍♀️

As long as you're not too weird you might be ok?

FurStories · 13/03/2022 17:10

My 19 year old son absolutely loves cats. And he's allergic too Sad. Isn't life cruel? But he's been brought up, on occasion, with them.

I myself have been brought up with cats AND dogs I love them both. However, cats are always beautiful, at the very least. Dogs - well some of them I love, some of the aggressive types you can stick them to be honest. I'm disabled too and no garden. So, cats easier, unless you're a traveller.

I am loving all these comments, thank you everyone! Tiger Lily is sitting with me now looking at the pictures!

I've lived with my cat longer than I've lived with DH. The day I went to pick up cat then DP came with me, when we got home cat climbed into DHs hood , brand new jumper, clawed his way up. DHs reaction 'oh bless him he must be scared, then to cat it's ok buddy you can hide in there if you like'. Cat made an appearance a bit later to try and swipe some of DHs sandwich, at which he laughed called him a chancer and gave him some tuna.
Cats are not the responsibility dogs are, so don't have the same lifestyle impacts and IME a man's reaction to your cat tells you a lot about him.
