Too Many Cats

Do you think having cats is a relationship dealbreaker/guys would find it weird? And how many cats is too many cats?

Didn’t realise cars were a dealbreaker!

DH had two cats when we got together, the cats were the reason I knew he was a keeper.

We now have five cats (including one of the original) they’re all rescues. We couldn’t turn them down. They tend to be out wandering during the day or sleeping in or around DH’s office, I’ll know where DH is wherever he is in the house as the cats will be there too. Or sitting in a row anxiously watching him mowing the lawn or taking a shower (one tries to rescue him when he takes a bath, which is very funny).

I'd prefer to date someone with 2 or more cats as chances are their cats then like other cats and it would be easier to eventually merge our cat families if we wanted to live together 😁 I have 4 cats who all get along well.

A dog would be more of a dealbreaker because my cats wouldn't want to live with a dog.

StripyOnesie · 11/03/2022 08:37

I have eight. Have had 13 at one point. (I rescue unwanted cats and kittens). Will be moving in with my boyfriend in a few months. He has no issues although I did reassure him that I would turn down any more rescues.

frazzledasarock · 11/03/2022 08:40

They all get on, the old man on the piano was disgruntled that daddy was playing the piano instead of cuddling him.

I really want a dog. But I’m sure our cats would just be mean to the poor doggy. So we haven’t yet ventured there

GodspeedJune · 11/03/2022 08:43

Despite some of the replies on this thread, when I was dating a few years ago, not one date was put off by me having 4 cats. Maybe it’s more important to women that it is men. Litter trays cleaned daily, house is clean and doesn’t smell.

I now find it quite amusing seeing DP feeding them. He looks like the pied piper of cats as they trot behind him.

I’ve since taken on another little rescue. In fairness DP wasn’t keen on keeping that one but now walks around cuddling him, calling him ‘his baby’ Hmm

I love cats, but I’m allergic. So one would be too many for me. But I say that with a heavy heart. I had a wonderful cat growing up (before the allergies kicked in). 🐈‍⬛

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/03/2022 08:43

Five and a half!

I do hope that 'the half' isn't mounted on the wall like a stags head Shock

Simonjt · 11/03/2022 08:45

No such thing as too many cats.

While I would date someone without pets (renting can make ownership hard), I would never date someone who wasn’t an animal lover or who wanted my animals lifestyle to change e.g not allowed in the bedroom.

FGS

That was a cat emoji on my phone. Yet it seems to have displayed here as some kind of leering fox creature.

AllThingsServeTheBeam · 11/03/2022 08:47

I had 3 when dp moved in 12 years ago. I think he wishes he'd thought twice 🤣

Same. I always thought I'd have cats and then the allergies came along. Luckily I love dogs as well, but our lifestyle isn't compatible with dog ownership at the moment.

@08:40frazzledasarock. Gorgeous cats! Smile

CharSiu · 11/03/2022 08:49

I have had two cats, we have one now. I would personally think five was too many.

With life we have to be true to ourselves so you can have as many cats as you like but equally someone may not like it.

hotpinkkettle · 11/03/2022 08:49

Maybe it’s more important to women that it is men.

I’m not so sure. Before we were married, my wife once accused me of thinking more of my cat than her. I told her not to ask me to choose, because the cat would win.

I had had him ten years and he wasn’t going anywhere.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 11/03/2022 08:52

My adult son won't date anyone who doesn't like cats. He has loads. Luckily DiL is just as cat crazy as am I. However my own mother and siblings don't like animals at all and won't have them in the house.

Hoppinggreen · 11/03/2022 08:54

I had 2 cats when DH moved in with me. He had never had a cat and wasn’t too keen so they all just ignored eachother.
I had to go away for a couple of weeks with work and he phoned me mid week one and said “Hopping, these cats - they have actual PERSONALITIES!!” And he loved them and all the subsequent ones since then
We did go up to 4 cats at one point which I think was a bit much for him. He was heading out one evening with a friend and as he left a cat tried to come in and the friend asked if it was one of our cats or a stray. He replied “no idea but let it in anyway, it’ll probably end up living here if it doesn’t already”

ImJustMadAboutSaffron · 11/03/2022 08:57

@Easterbunnyiswindowshopping

I want to see the half dcat
I have to wait for when she pops round. She is a local cat who spends a lot of time here. The Dreamies might have something to do with it ...

Thank you @pinkyredrose

Only down side now is we’re thinking of moving, but house has to be suitable for cats, ie not near busy roads, has space for them to roam around outside etc…. We don’t even think about the DC’s needs that much 😆

daisyjgrey · 11/03/2022 08:59

I would a bit eyebrowy if they had more than three, unless they were a vet/veterinary nurse/worked in a rescue or something.

SunflowerTed · 11/03/2022 09:01

I’m so jealous

pointythings · 11/03/2022 09:04

I have 4 cats (as of 3 weeks ago, was 2 before then). All rescues. I am single and have no intention of changing that - but if I were to date, any man would have to accept the cats.

It does matter whether you can afford them - I thought long and hard about getting the other two. But I have a big enough house that they can all be in a different room if they want, and they all get on really well.

I have a ginger and white one like yours. He's nearly 16 and now my oldest as I recently I lost my oldest girl at almost 20. The youngest is 10 months old. My ex hated cats and to be fair I did talk about them quite a bit.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 11/03/2022 09:11

10+ cats is too many cats. Unless you run a (registered) rescue centre or a boarding cattery.

Some people will be turned off pets because they see pet ownership as needy, a hygiene issue, they have allergies or they just don’t like or see the need for pets, some people even see pet ownership as cruel or unethical. Others will see it as a positive, a sign of empathy, warmth and an ability to love.

pointythings · 11/03/2022 09:16

ImJustMadAboutSaffron I have two ginger and white boys who are a shade over 5 months - one is currently sporting The Cone as he was neutered yesterday, the other is waiting another month to see if his missing testicle descends because he's small for his age. The tabby boy is coming up 2.5 years old (nobody knows for sure as he was found on the street) and the black girl is about 4 (again nobody knows for sure as she was captured in a feral colony - which has now all been trapped and rehomed!) So they're all young. I'm 54 so I suspect that after these 4 go on to their next 9 lives I will either not have cats again or will specialise in taking in older boys and girls from my local rescue - they have arrangements to support this, which is great.
