The Rules:

  1. The first rule about the dating thread is don't talk about it with people you're dating.
  2. Develop a thick skin.
  3. Do not invest emotionally too soon.
  4. It's all BS until it actually happens.
  5. Trust your gut instinct.
  6. People vanishing, lying & being generally weird is not your fault.
  7. Know your worth.
  8. If it's not fun, stop.
  9. Loo update is mandatory.
10. No dating the thread. 11. Treat others as you'd like to be treated 12. Any relationship you have that could get ruined by having a conversation about your feelings, standards and/or expectations wasn't really stable enough to begin with 13. The things you choose to ignore/ tolerate now are the reasons you will break up in the future 14. OLD can get very time consuming. Keep doing other activities you enjoy.

Optional: Please give your irons (potential dates you are talking to) nicknames like Mr Scottish. Initials are allowed (Mr S) when you are an item

Ive never been to the opera @SpringlikeBunk. I bet it's absolutely beautiful though. I love classical music too.

Naimee87 · 16/11/2021 18:54

@FabulousMrFifty i understand about 2% of the post about checks... how old is the bill you are trying to pay? Not sure what Liberace means and who is StPeter?

JustThisLastLittleBit · 16/11/2021 18:55

I always think I don’t ‘get’ opera but I’ve now discovered the English National Opera and it’s brill. Handmaid’s Tale, the Opera in April anyone?

Agree re R2 🤮. Mr GN listens to it, my hand constantly hovers over the ‘off’ switch on him for that alone.

I’m Elvis meets prog rock meets punk meets reggae meets 80s heyday, I basically stopped listening to music when my 3 DDs came along within the space of 3 years in the early 90s. I’m trying to catch up on the last 30 years now, these recommendations are brilliant, thank you! As is Spotify of course…

Shayelle2009 · 16/11/2021 18:56

Ooooh I’d love 30 years of music I’d not listened to @JustThisLastLittleBit.. lucky you 🥰🥰

JustThisLastLittleBit · 16/11/2021 18:59

Thanks @Shayelle2009, that’s a good way of looking at it - and I’m loving it! Love festivals too, though only managed one this year.

Naimee87 · 16/11/2021 18:59

@Shayelle2009 music is so important on so many levels! It's on my 'profile' trucks, trance and techno was pretty much all i had listed. 🤩 and sports and pugs.

@WeWantTheFinestWines

Interesting comment regarding ‘action’, as a young man, that was a difficult time for me (do young women get to pick and choose more ?), but now as an older man, not so much of a problem to be honest, but I’ve certainly moved from quantity to quality ( this probably is an thing)

That's really interesting. I suppose there was a level of 'picking and choosing' in my younger days as I scrubbed up well. I was always very choosy, but in a really stupid way, so I ended up going for looks and social status like a cliche and never actually finding someone right for me, or who I was right for. I had more sex - not difficult as I'm currently having none - but was also more heartbroken. I did also have a lot of fun, just for the record...

You are obviously doing well in the action department (nudge nudge wink wink) and absolutely doing the right thing going by quality over quantity. And - another cliche - men often age well, as long as they look after themselves, so you're obviously a hot ticket in your hot fifties!

BelladiMamma · 16/11/2021 20:12

@SpringlikeBunk

I'll have a wee look and DM you *@BelladiMamma* x (initially thinking just before or after the "main weekend" ie 4th or 7th)
Sounds perfect. Excited!
BelladiMamma · 16/11/2021 20:14

Re music I think we have reached peak indie in this house as my DD is listening to Nick Cave whilst doing her French homework and her hair looks like Tim Burgess's from The Charlatans. She just told me that she prefers Suede later albums although agrees that the artwork for the Coming Up sleeve is a masterpiece

My work here is done ♥️

Love it Bella! Neither of my DS have any interest in music whatsoever. Football, gaming, bikes, football... where did I go wrong 😐
dancemom · 16/11/2021 20:41

I had a date zero today, coffee although it turned into lunch. Was with a guy I'd matched on the apps several times with and chatted with but we never actually got as far as a date. This time he asked me out and I said yes and we met all within a few days! Date was nice, he's really easy to chat with but I'm withholding judgement for now. I'll call him Mr Engineer.

Another iron popped up tonight, he's asked me out already even though we are still just app chatting. Might just say yes and go for it though ....

BelladiMamma · 16/11/2021 20:55

@dancemom good on you for getting out there. I'm finding it hard to actually get any dates in before Christmas now!

BelladiMamma · 16/11/2021 20:56

@WeWantTheFinestWines oh well at least they won't be going around with their hair over their eyes for the next ten years 🤣

I’m sorry it was just nonsense really.

I was giving a charity donation (RNLI), so sent a cheque.

Saint Peter guards the gates of heaven (Pearly Gates), & Liberace was on over the top American entertainer in the 60s & 70s

FabulousMrFifty · 16/11/2021 21:22

Does anyone buy music anymore?
I just stream of Amazon music or Spotify via aSonos or CarPlay

Isitreallyme177 · 16/11/2021 21:41

My Dad still buys CDs, ergo I still buy them at Christmas. I stream all my music now though and haven't bought a cd for myself in years.

VanGoghsDog · 16/11/2021 22:34

@WeWantTheFinestWines

I'm loving all the music love on here! Unfortunately, my ex ruined Radio 6 for me for ever by blasting it out non-stop way too loud all the bloody time. A bit too much noodly jazzy world music-y for me, although I've always quite fancied Shaun Keaveney. I'm all about Radio X these days although they get a bit too repetitive at times. My Spotify is a weird mixture of old, new, classical, rock, pop and weird poetry in my native language put to music and I love it all. The more I can sing along at the top of my voice the happier I am.

@Shayelle2009 music can be such a huge passion, can't it - I worked in the music industry in London in the 90s and never get tired of going to gigs. A friend asked me if I fancied driving 1.5 hours each way on a Thursday night last week to see a band I'd never heard of and I was there like a shot. Had a great time, despite all the roadworks and not getting home until 1am on a school night.

@FabulousMrFifty I am going to have to reprimand you again for playing the "I'm so old" card. I am no youngster, I'm older than you, have grey hair and remember cheques - but I also discover new music all the time go to gigs and dance the night away with the best of them. It's a mindset and I still feel about 23. Having said that, at 23 I was seeing a lot more action than I am now, so maybe it is time for my slippers and pipe...

@VanGoghsDog Mr WG sounds so lovely. I may have missed out on the reason you are going to invite Mr Stone to your Christmas Party - is it lack of commitment or long term potential from Mr WG? Or the lack of PIV sex? It sounds like you could run into a tricky situation juggling them both, but you've got your head screwed on so I'm sure you know what you're doing.

I wish I knew what I was doing!!

Re party and MrStone, I've invited a few people from my walking group, as he's my friend (as we agreed when I rejected his amorous advances) it would be odd not to invite him!
MrWG will neither know nor care if he's invited, nor would he be able to come even if he was! I did mention it briefly a couple of times this weekend and he never said "am I invited" or looked like he was hoping or expecting to be.

He can't have it both ways - hook up once a month but also want the full gf experience! Though, to be fair to him, he knows this.

I'm not sure not having any conversation was a good thing. I really need to say "I've got feelings, FWB won't work if there are feelings, either we both want more (i.e. you have feelings too) or it's the end". But I can't. :)

I'm sure it will all come to a head somehow!

VanGoghsDog · 16/11/2021 22:37

@FabulousMrFifty

I buy CDs, I prefer them. I can't get the hang of streamed music and I don't like monthly subs.

I lost over eighty albums when I stopped using the only i device I ever owned, I have no way to access them and I paid for them all. Also, same with a load of music I had on Google music, no idea what happened, it all disappeared when they decommissioned the app, I paid for that too!

CDs - they don't disappear!!

StartingAgain6369 · 16/11/2021 23:00

Just having a bit of a catch up, unfortunately work is getting in the way of keeping up with the speed of this list

@Shayelle2009
I used to dj drum & bass on pirate radio – wow ! will we get you on the decks in Feb ?

I can’t beat Billy Joel but I can raise you Tony Christie on the last fast evening train out of Euston (tbh that was a giggle in the carriage) and Barry Manilow who was on a table next to me in a Birmingham restaurant

@VanGoghsDog
Pleased to hear the weekend went well with Mr WG, hope your poorly car is now fixed and the bill wasn’t horrific

VanGoghsDog · 16/11/2021 23:18

@StartingAgain6369

The bill was under £50! All that fuss.......it was just a sensor but the error light won't go away without it and I think any error light is an MOT fail so it had to be fixed sometime.

The bill for the boiler though........luckily I don't have to pay that, but that boiler is now like Trigger's broom!

HairyArsedMan · 16/11/2021 23:36

@Shayelle2009 Also got a few boxes of vinyl in the attic that might be worth a bit. I should sell them really; they need to go to a good home. Have you listened to the Goldie/James Davidson/Subjective stuff from the last couple of years ? Love it.

Lemondrizzlegin · 17/11/2021 05:22

First time posting here, I need your expert opinions!! First dabble at OLD and have been chatting to someone who has now asked me on a date and I'm sooooo nervous!!! Haven't dated in years. Advice on how to do date zero please, how do you deal with it if you see them and then think no or vice versa??!! God I sound like a teenager not 45!

Eesha · 17/11/2021 06:27

I'm an indie music fan and have been to many a Suede gig....though I'm pretty sure Brett went and married a natural food yoga lady. Not exactly the wild one he was then.

Dazedandconfused10 · 17/11/2021 06:38

@Lemondrizzlegin I'm pretty good at talking to new people so even if it's a no I try to stick it out for an hour or 2 (unless they give total creep vibes then there is no harm in just saying you need to leave)

I also only do drinks for date zero, no need for dinner or anything else. Good luck and enjoy it!

Music folks! I have found my people, my next year is just all the gigs I was supposed to go to last year and this year.

I have date zero with Mr 3rd time lucky tonight if he doesn't show or cancels then I'm done with him.
