Engagement ring much MUCH too small

Perhaps this belongs in Style and Beauty, I don’t know? I’m a bit stuck.

My new engagement ring is a 40 year old solitaire sapphire Tiffany ring in platinum. Flanked by 2 diamonds in the shank. RRP: insane.

It is size L. And my fat fingers are a whopping P by comparison.

I’m not in love with the idea of sending it away for resizing due to the value. So, I’m going to have to organise something in a few weeks.

I have this sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach that it will not be able to be resized by the required 4 sizes. What jeweller would even attempt it when they could damage something so expensive?

Just wondering if anyone else has any experience in this ball park?

Obviously, I have stopped eating, in case this helps the situation.CakeHaloGrin

I’m so happy to be engaged and the ring is just ridiculously beautiful but all I can do is look at the box. I’m worried I’ll never be able to wear it.

Congratulations!

I would wait until jewellers open and ask a local jeweller to either resize to make you a new band.

Where are you in the UK? Maybe another poster could recommend a jeweller?

SendMeHome · 21/02/2021 14:04

It sounds beautiful! Congratulations on the engagement Flowers

I got my ring in 2019, and couldn’t try it on before, so it was a tense wait to see if it could be resized. I was told by many jewellers that rings can go up or down two sizes, although mine could actually only got 1.2 sizes in either direction due to the gems.

I’m guessing it can’t be swapped for a different size?

In the end my ring needed to go down; not up, and I signed something to say I was happy with them trying even though the gems made it inadvisable and it might break during the process, or dislodge the gems/weaken the ring. It went down 1.2 and is mostly perfect now, bit too big in the colder weather. It probably is a bit weaker as a result - the band snapped on our honeymoon, where it’d been resized - but it was easily fixed and I keep a close eye on it.

I hope yours is doable too.

Out of curiousity, how did that happen? Did they just guess...

Why aren't you taking it back to Tiffany?

MrsWindass · 21/02/2021 14:06

If it's a Tiffany I would be consulting with them.

Ladsladslads · 21/02/2021 14:08

Tiffany did the first resize of my engagement ring for free. Its worth contacting them to ask the question

UncleBrynsMySpaceFriend · 21/02/2021 14:11

I might be talking out of my arse (so apologies) but could you possibly have the stones reset on a different band?
My engagement ring was slightly too small and I did loose a bit of weight and it fitted but it was probably only a size too small. I think it would be exceptionally difficult to slim down by four ring sizes, especially if you are chubby of finger anyway (as I am). My fingers also got loads bigger during pregnancy, so I ended up getting my engagement and wedding rings resized anyway.
Congratulations on your engagement!

TomHardyAndMe · 21/02/2021 14:13

It’s vintage?

It’s 40 years old. We don’t even know where it was purchased from.

WeeDangerousSpike · 21/02/2021 14:15

I presume from the OP saying it's 40 years old, that it's a family piece, not newly purchased - hence the wrong size.

It might be worth talking to Tiffany anyway OP, I recall a thread where a poster had bought a Tiffany pen that was broken for a few quid, when it was taken to Tiffany to see if it could be fixed they did a full service and repair for free!

Nanasueathome · 21/02/2021 14:19

The jewellery quarter in birmingham should be able to sort it for you once shops can re open again

jomeow1 · 21/02/2021 14:33

I had mine resized 3.5,sizes - took a few days but was easy. The band was a lot thinner after though.

As yours is platinum I think that’s strong and should be fine. Not sure what an ‘insane RRP’ is but mine was around 12k and there were no issues but it was the jeweller that designed / made it that did the resizing so might have helped.

GruffaIo · 21/02/2021 14:36

Take it to Tiffany. As it's a solitaire, worst case scenario is that they reset the stone in a new band.

I had vintage Tiffany earrings changed from screw fittings to post fittings. They were very reasonably priced and took great care over the work. I took them to the Tiffany on Old Bond St - the repair section was upstairs.

StarlitTrees · 21/02/2021 14:40

I'm sure it was on here that I read about someone sending an expensive necklace in for repair at a jewellers and received a cheaper necklace back in the end. The moral of that story was to make sure wherever you take it make sure a very detailed accurate receipt of the ring is written and given to you when you leave it with them or you don't have a leg to stand on!

crosshatching · 21/02/2021 14:43

I was going to say the Jewellery Quarter as well @Nanasueathome, I inherited my great grandmother's wedding ring and had it resized for my fingers before I got married too. Good luck OP it sounds beautiful.

AintPageantMaterial · 21/02/2021 14:45

I fell in love with a vintage ring. I loved the stones and the setting but the band was platinum and I wanted yellow gold. The jeweller took the setting off the band and attached it to a yellow band. I have been married 20 years and have had the ring inspected several times for insurance purposes and it completely sound and still the ring of my dreams.

ShirleyPhallus · 21/02/2021 14:47

Anyone else opened this expecting the OP to be complaining of a diamond too small? Grin

Agree with the others that you should be able to get this resized

mike3 · 21/02/2021 14:50

My bad missed that it was 40 years old...

ScoobyBlues · 21/02/2021 14:55

I've had my Tiffany engagement ring melted down and reshaped back to it's original shape as it was worn at the back. I had it done at Tiffany. See photo for thinning demonstration!

I paid for the extra platinum that was needed and that's all I paid. I remember that they couldn't tell me the absolute exact price until.the day I took it in because the price of platinum changes every day. 🤯

Anyway they had it about a week and I got it back all lovely and shiny in a new box.

No advice, but that ring sounds beautiful. Please show us 😍

jomeow1 · 21/02/2021 15:01

@MizMoonshine seconded. Sapphires are stunning!

OmicronPersei7 · 21/02/2021 15:11

Thank you all for your responses. I actually feel much better now. I hadn’t even considered that the entire setting could be placed on a new band. I’ve just been fretting about the ring being out of my reach forever.

I am so impatient to wear it, it’s driving me mad!

It is very, very beautiful

user85963842 · 21/02/2021 15:16

I was just going to ask to see a photo, it is beautiful! I'm sure you will be able to do something with it, even if it is reset them on a different ring.

Congratulations, come back and let us know what you do!

ScoobyBlues · 21/02/2021 15:18

It's gorgeous.

I just walked in to Tiffany with mine, you don't need proof that it's from there. They must be able to tell.

fabulousathome · 21/02/2021 15:18

Definitely start with Tiffany. I'm sure they will be able to help you.

At the worst they will put the stones in a similar or a copy of the setting in the right size with the Tiffany hallmark on the metal for 2021.

Good luck.
