Is height really important ?

Had a social distance date with a guy yesterday. Was a little disappointed to see he looked shorter than the 5'11 that was on his profile (I'm 5'7 so quite tall) but then when we got talking I found him a nice person and we seemed to get on great.

Just wondered others thoughts on height and those who have a partner what are your heights ? Does it bother you ?

I have about a half an inch on DH, works great when I'm pissed off with him, I fetch my highest heals or wedges as I know he's a bit self conscious of his height. I wore flats on my wedding day (things you do for love) which I kinda regretted afterwards.

IndieTara · 23/06/2020 15:49

I'm 5ft 10 and 6ft 1 in heels. I have had 2 boyfriends who were the same height as me but ultimately I hated towering over them in heels and wouldn't do it again.

ThoseBoots

Perhaps I phrased that badly, maybe it allows women to be pickier, or the format encourages it. It might even be a bit of a selfperpetuating cycle - men just trying to find someone to match with so swiping right on everyone, women knowing they will match with a lot of their swipes so only considering the best etc (because you can only really chat with so many people anyway). I wasn't meaning it as a value judgement against women using the sites.

bumblingbovine49 · 23/06/2020 16:10

ffs . Most people don't even really know their exact height so men estimate it up by an inch or so . So bloody what. I'd hardly call that lying.

THE AVERAGE HEIGHT IN THE UK FOR MEN IS 5ft 9inch . I am always astonished at the number of women on here who won't consider a man who i under 6ft. Maybe you don't want someone much shorter than you (though I find that weird too) but objecting when someone is ONLY 3-4 inches taller than you is bonkers

If you are 5ft 6inch, someone who is 5ft 9 is quite a bit taller than you

HotSince82 · 23/06/2020 16:16

Reading through these responses it strikes me that lots of women seek a taller partner in order to validate their femininity.

Gremlinpoop · 23/06/2020 16:16

Height is just part of the screening process. I. My youth ( I'm now old and married) I wouldn't bother with anyone shorter than myself. I am absolutely not saying this is a good thing but it was my thing.
I had a friend who was very religious she would only date other Christians, that was her thing ( she is still single btw).
As demonstrated by my friend just make sure your thing is really important to you before you discount somebody.
Was the date still taller than you btw? If so I wouldn't discount.

Wolfgirrl · 23/06/2020 16:19

I agree with Bumbling. The average man is 4 inches taller than the average woman, I would say that gap is plenty. Of course everyone is entitled to their own attractions but I dont know why an 8 inch gap is necessary?

BobFleming · 23/06/2020 16:20

I’ve never considered it as ‘validating femininity’ but it’s probably a valid point. In the same way you wouldn’t want to weigh more than your husband.

Wolfgirrl · 23/06/2020 16:21

I would say most women weigh more than their husbands regardless of height.

HotSince82 · 23/06/2020 16:22

I'd be aghast at weighing more than my husband. He has at least three stones on me despite being 2" shorter, so I'm not above needing my feminity validated either.

HotSince82 · 23/06/2020 16:23

@Wolfgirrl are you joking?

Wolfgirrl · 23/06/2020 16:25

No. Or if not more, then pretty much the same.

Men seem to be skinnier until they hit middle age whereas with women the weight starts creeping on from the teens.

Nicolastuffedone · 23/06/2020 16:26

I like tall men.....absolutely nothing to do with ‘validating my femininity’ I don’t need validation! I wouldn’t have gone out with a man smaller than me, just no attraction for me at all

Wolfgirrl · 23/06/2020 16:28

I just had a look and the average woman is 5'3 and 11 stone. Average man 5'9 and 13 stone. Not a huge difference given an extra 6 inches of height, men have more muscle etc.

PhoneLock · 23/06/2020 16:28

If you are 5ft 6inch, someone who is 5ft 9 is quite a bit taller than you

Not if you are wearing heels.

ThoseBootsAreMadeForWalking · 23/06/2020 16:33

@whatsthecomingoverthehill
Oh I didn’t see a judgement in your statement. Just stating that attraction and chemistry are both important. Like my example of the bar, it’s less obvious in RL than ticking a box on OLD but it’s still there. We naturally gravitate towards people we are attracted to. I find comments having a go at men for not dating size 10s or woman not dating 5’9s a bit bizarre, that’s all. It’s for them to reach the point where they can’t find someone to challenge their preferences. If they find what they like then good for them!

I don’t use the swipy thing so maybe I missed the technicality of your comment, being unable to tell my left from my right, it’s safer for me Grin!

lubeybooby · 23/06/2020 16:34

height is important in attraction for me

at the same time I fully accept I'm not everyones cup of tea either attraction wise

HotSince82 · 23/06/2020 16:36

Well I am surprised you think so.
All of my partners have been either slightly taller or slightly shorter than me, but without exception have been at least three stones heavier.
I'd never date a man who wasn't well built, muscular, heavy set etc. Whereas tall men don't do anything for me.

Put it this way; if there's gonna be a gazelle in the relationship then its gonna be me Grin

PhoneLock · 23/06/2020 16:40

I'd never date a man who wasn't well built, muscular, heavy set etc. Whereas tall men don't do anything for me.

Tall and well built are not mutually exclusive.

Wolfgirrl · 23/06/2020 16:41

@phonelock no but most tall men are not well built in my experience.

I'm the same, I like to feel slighter than my other half.

HotSince82 · 23/06/2020 16:43

Granted but the tall would be incidental to my attraction to them.
I like how long and slender my limbs look when I'm laying in bed next to a muscular guy of average height.
Thats just my particular thing I suppose.

HotSince82 · 23/06/2020 16:45

Also I suppose there's a subliminal genetically based attraction for our opposite body types. Helps our offspring to gravitate to the average height/body shape etc. Although my boys are all tall and lanky like me, so perhaps not?

PhoneLock · 23/06/2020 16:46

no but most tall men are not well built in my experience.

My view is probably skewed because I'm married to one, and another one lives next door. Smile

HotSince82 · 23/06/2020 16:50

A close colleague of mine is 5'3 and a size 14, her DH is 6'2 and a size 30" waist.
They are the exact opposite of my DH and I.
Different strokes for different folks Wink

ThoseBootsAreMadeForWalking · 23/06/2020 16:56

I like how long and slender my limbs look when I'm laying in bed next to a muscular guy of average height.

And that’s your thing.

My thing is that my head fits under his chin when he hugs me. 🤷🏼‍♀️
