Partner described as a 'race traitor'

sweetnsuga123 · 07/04/2020 17:35

Amongst other things... I have been with my boyfriend for 3 and a half years. We live in a predominately white area I am white he is black. A couple of weeks ago he was called a race traitor when we were on a date and got that shouted at him. We were also cat called about a month ago with someone shouting 'once you go black you never go back'.

Anyone else had experiences of this? I find it crazy how we are in 2020 and these things are still happening.

Some people are very backward and lack intelligence. You are right it is crazy.

Lordfrontpaw · 07/04/2020 17:40

Sorry - where the hell do you live? Alabama 1952?

sweetnsuga123 · 07/04/2020 17:41

Don't want to be too specific but in the North West @lordfrontpaw

Sorry it’s so shit for you.

Sadly, it never goes away. I am ‘dual heritage/mixed race/whatever it is these days’ and my husband is white. You would not believe the amount of covert racism that people get away with when I’m not with him. He sometimes calls them out on it, most of the doesn’t bother. He reported someone once when he said something really awful..
I’ve been called all sorts growing up and have had to explain my own ‘whiteness’ (fairly pale with blue eyes) countless times, to both black and white people; showing them a photo of my parents etc.
Even my own friend referred to Prince Harry and Meghan’s child as ‘the ginger darkie’; she thought I would find it funny.
God only knows what my parents went through.. I think it’s a lot easier than it used to be but, it’s absolutely still there.

Crackerscheesescabbyknees · 07/04/2020 17:47

Throat punch the offending party(ies).

zelbazinnamon · 07/04/2020 17:48

My brother is white and his partner is black. They have also had comments on the street. She’s been told she’s a race traitor too.

Poppyfr33 · 07/04/2020 17:49

Some people have no brain

TheTickingTime · 07/04/2020 17:50

Unhinged opinionated people are so pleasant aren't they? Who do they think they are? A comeback is never a good idea, just leave who ever said this be as they are clearly very entitled and feel they can dish out comments like these. As difficult as it may be, ignore it. Embrace the love you have for one another, it's nobodies business

Neolara · 07/04/2020 17:53

I'm confused. Is your dp a "race traitor" because he is going out with a white woman? Was the person who said this white? All sound hideous.

Crackerscheesescabbyknees · 07/04/2020 17:53

The stance that black people (or any POC as it's often extended to) cannot be racist absolutely perpetuates this kind of behaviour.

The belief is that, as black people (or POC) generally aren't in the more powerful position, they cannot be classed as racist.

And it's fucking stupid.

Anyone that acts out in a negative manner toward someone based on their race (or the race of their chosen partner, as is the case here) is a racist.

I would report this behaviour. If a white person shouted out that you were a race traitor, I doubt anyone with half a heart in earshot would just let it go.

No one should be subjected to this.

Report it. Or throat punch.

sweetnsuga123 · 07/04/2020 17:54

@Neolara The person who said 'race traitor' was black and said it towards my boyfriend for being with me, a white woman. The 'once you go black' was a white man. Sorry should've made that a bit clearer.

assburgers1 · 07/04/2020 17:56

Sorry you had to experience that op. Why are some people still so rude/ ignorant Angry

Crackerscheesescabbyknees · 07/04/2020 17:58

Also I've personally never experienced this. I have been in my share and variety of mixed race relationships (I am a white woman). My family have never rejected or been unkind to any boyfriend I have had based on their race, and likewise no one has been unkind to me.

However, my sister was the victim of this mindset. Her long term boyfriend was Indian. His mother actually introduced them at work. When their relationship became serious and they began to plan for the future, in fact directly after they returned from a holiday, his parents sat him down and told him to end the relationship.

The phrase "you wouldn't want a mongrel dog so why would you want mongrel children?" was used. By his mother.

Fedupandpoor · 07/04/2020 17:58

@Crackerscheesescabbyknees But racism is defined as the oppression or exploitation of a race over generations. White people have never experienced that so cannot cry racism, bigotry or prejudice maybe but not racism.

assburgers1 · 07/04/2020 17:59

Some of the ‘banter’ I’ve over heard at my office gossiping about someone who happened to have a black partner, saying “didn’t think they’d be the sort” and the cringeworthy “once you go black” comment

I work in the Midlands

Fedupandpoor · 07/04/2020 18:00

Sorry that was unclear, they could say it is bigotry or prejudice, but not racism.

phoenixrosehere · 07/04/2020 18:04

@Fedupandpoor

No. It still falls under racism.

Cambridge dictionary:

the belief that people's qualities are influenced by their race and that the members of other races are not as good as the members of your own, or the resulting unfair treatment of members of other races.

weekfour · 07/04/2020 18:06

I've heard the race traitor thing twice recently. I'm also from the North West. Both times I was in East Manchester and it was directed at black men (my business partners) who were with white women(me) , from black women.

Never experienced anything like it before.

Crackerscheesescabbyknees · 07/04/2020 18:06

@phoenixrosehere this 10000 times.

Anyone can be racist.

Anyone can express racist views.

The colour of your skin does not prevent you from being an arsehole.

AgeLikeWine · 07/04/2020 18:08

It’s unfortunate that OP is finding out that in the real world, and contrary to politically correct dogma, racism isn’t exclusively confined to white people.

The reality is that some people of all ethnicities are racist idiots who cannot see beyond skin colour. This includes patronising right-on people who are incapable of viewing BAME people as equals, instead pigeonholing and stereotyping them as ‘oppressed’ victims.

StuckInnTheMiddle · 07/04/2020 18:11

I’m of Indian descent and my dh is south African, mixed race black and Dutch. The amount of comments I hear when we’re together is unreal. Nearly always from the Asian community btw, mostly always people of Pakistani origin. It’s actually really sad. I once had my dc called half-breeds by a particularly nasty woman.

rac·ism | \ ˈrā-ˌsi-zəm also -ˌshi-

Definition of racism
1: a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
2a: a doctrine or political program based on the assumption of racism and designed to execute its principles
b: a political or social system founded on racism
3: racial prejudice or discrimination

Merriam Webster.
The literal definition.

We have this made up definition, infinitely fed to us by Instagram. How about we take it away from the mass and down to the individual.

Is it not possible that an individual white person has been denied advancement in an educational or work setting based solely on the colour of their skin?

In the same way, can we assume that every POC has received discrimination or exploitation as an individual?

So why do all individuals get the umbrella protection or lack of purely based on the colour of their skin? The idea that white people are the only people capable of being racist is, in itself, racist.

WakeAndBake · 07/04/2020 18:17

pp’s throat punch

I take it this is a joke? Like the boxer BJ Saunders joke? Was that funny?

Are jokes about violence ok if it is women threatening men?

Crackerscheesescabbyknees · 07/04/2020 18:19

I didn't specify a gender. Throat punch any racist.
