Would this put you off a guy ?

Someone I've been talking to. He sounds nice but comes across as a travel snob. He's one of those who 'found himself' travelling across Asia or whatever, which is fine.
But I don't think he understands that not everyone is able to do that. He's said, "you have people like me who want to see the world then those people who just go to Benidorm twice a year."
Just seems to see himself as superior because he's been 'off the beaten track' so to speak. Would this put you off someone or should I give it a chance ?

would you prefer benidorm op?

Honestly, i'd a million times over rather be in a nice hotel by the pool in Benidorm than some sort of party hostel in a dangerous middle of nowhere area eating noodles and rice

Ffs you’re as bad as him!!

I love how you’re calling him out on his racism regarding food & yet you come out with the eating noodles and rice stereotype, is that all Asians eat then?

It’s also ironic that you’re making assumptions & turning your nose up at Asia in the same way that he’s turning his nose up at Benidorm! Just like there are lovely places in Benidorm, there are also lovely places in Asia, they’re not all some sort of party hostel in a dangerous middle of nowhere area. Believe it or not, as well as hostels off the beaten track, Asia also has towns & cities as well as nice & safe, luxury resorts with pools just like you prefer. Travel options tend to run from low budget to high end luxury on most continents you know.

Oh & FYI, as for being dangerous - there’s crime in Spain too you.

Honestly, you create a thread calling him out on racism / snobbery & then you come out with your own racism, stereotypes & cliched crap

I hate travelling. Want to get where I'm going in the blink of an eye.
Saying that, I'm off to Australia again next year (to visit son).

Hate people who boast of where they have been. So what??? Doesn't make you more intelligent or likeable than the next person!!

Agree he does sound arrogant and annoying but I’d give him a chance. It’s a good conversation topic and it might be interesting to hear of his adventures.

Eating dogs - what’s wrong with that that isn’t wrong with eating chicken or pigs? It’s a delicacy in a large part of the world.

Honestly, i'd a million times over rather be in a nice hotel by the pool in Benidorm than some sort of party hostel in a dangerous middle of nowhere area eating noodles and rice, but I guess real travellers see the 2nd option as more character building 😁

Eh, there are options between those two poles Confused.

On the main subject, he dies sound like a but of a twat.

Sandals19 · 06/12/2019 08:16

*does sound like a bit of a twat

While I don't like travel snobs & bores, I do understand why people might assume that some of those who exclusively prefer package holidays to commercial, a anglicised (and sometimes tacky) destinations will be narrow minded, ignorant etc, as that post illustrated. I find some of the benidorm and similar destination goers I've met (whose priorities are usually cheap fags, cheap booze, baking sun, volume of food, entertainment (bar singers etc) are really racist and ignorant unfortunately.

Sandals19 · 06/12/2019 08:24

That's sometimes where the dislike comes from (from people who've travelled more widely). However some people who've travelled more offbeat can be snobs, hypocritical, and wankers in a different way; which this guy seems.
