Engagement ring confusion

Blueflower22 · 04/02/2019 01:08

Hello ladies,

I am wondering what I should do as I am in a scenario where dp can't afford to get me an engagement ring that I actually like. Anything in his price range isn't that nice, I don't really want to say I don't like anything because I don't want to hurt his feelings. So I'm not sure what to do, because at the same time I don't want a ring that I'm not keen on and that I don't like at all, but I don't want to delay the wedding even more because it's already going to take him three months to save up for a ring in his price range. Any advice? Has anyone been in this situation?

You can get lots of lovely man made diamonds options and then if you want replaced the diamond to a real one later. Or just wait for wedding and get wedding band followed by an eternity ring later x

I am not much into diamonds. I have a lovely London Blue Topaz engagement ring from Etsy. It's very unique and Victorian style. Maybe try there? It was under $200 (I am in the US) for the engagement ring and wedding band set.

Blueflower22 · 04/02/2019 10:07

@alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 I don't have much money

@elemenopeee hmmmm i like just a plain solitaire, or a solitaire with a few stones in the arms

@elemenopeee his price range is £1000 but I wanted to get a wedding band to match as well

@anxiousbundle the rest of the wedding is not at all expensive , maybe only £200

@PerspicaciaTick ohh no it's not three months wages, it's basically just left over money from the month
@European12345 the wedding in itself is simple, we are not doing a lot so that will only cost a few hundred including the outfits. I didn't really want to spend loads on a dress as I'd rather him spend on a decent ring that I like and keep forever

@Si1ver what is a vintage ring??

greendale17 · 04/02/2019 10:19

I think the wedding ring is far more important than the engagement ring

StandUpForYourRights · 04/02/2019 10:21

You can't get want you like for £1000 ShockHmm.

Is it all about the ring or getting married to the love of your life?

I could never make someone save for 3 months. Mine was less than £200 and is very precious to me as we chose it together.

Sorry OP but this comes across as very materialistic.

silkpyjamasallday · 04/02/2019 10:22

£1000 isn't exactly a small budget OP, you could get a lovely ring for that. Obviously it's not going to get you a massive Kim K style 20ct diamond but you can certainly get something very nice for that. Mine only cost £600 for just under half a carat diamond in rose gold. We got it from 77diamonds, you pick the stone and the style, it was a great service. I could have asked DP to spend 10x the price, we could afford it, but what a waste of money. How much do the rings you like cost OP?

Karigan195 · 04/02/2019 10:25

Are you sure you’re not being more swayed by the price tag than the design as there are whole ranges of styles at all price levels. Only difference is the gold and jewel content. So unless you’ve got your heart set on a rare black diamond or something like that I have to say your comment sounds like an excuse to get a more expensive ring to me.

brokenhead · 04/02/2019 10:26

Jesus a thousand pounds is a lot of money for a ring ...

MikeUniformMike · 04/02/2019 10:26

Engagement rings are prone to a bit of emotional blackmail on the part of the retailers/manufacturers.
They are overpriced.
Find a second hand one, if you need one. It will be much cheaper.

brokenhead · 04/02/2019 10:27

Speaking as someone who is really into nice things and flashy if you honestly feel a ring for one thousand pounds won't be what you want it to be but you haven't got any of your own money ConfusedConfused
I'm confused

Stinkytoe · 04/02/2019 10:31

Go for something like this

www.caratlondon.com/collections/engagement-rings/products/estelle-round-set

It’s an artificial diamond but no one will know

Myusernameismud · 04/02/2019 10:33

Jayyyysus, my beautiful engagement ring cost 350! And that was 3 years ago. DH was skint so we went halves. It's a beautiful white gold, halo engagement ring. Not a full carat, but I've got little hands so it looks just right. Plus, you know, I was engaged to the man I loved so if it had been a haribo ring I'd still have worn it. I can never get over women who get so snooty about rings. Yes you're going to wear it, but not for the whole of your life if you don't want to, and if the ring is the most important thing about the relationship then maybe you need to re-evaluate!

Etino · 04/02/2019 10:33

Greedy.

ArnoldBee · 04/02/2019 10:36

My friend had an expensive engagement ring that matched her wedding ring. She wore it everyday and everywhere then text us all when it broke in tears. I wear a cheap second hand wedding ring for every day wear as I put my hands in mud etc etc and I keep my proper one for best.

lostfrequencies · 04/02/2019 10:36

Indeed, Etino.

flowery · 04/02/2019 10:38

My engagement ring cost about £20 from Argos. I loved it because it meant DH loved me and wanted to be with me forever.

He got me a lovely expensive one later, once he was earning (we were students when we got engaged), but the fact he couldn’t afford that at the beginning didn’t make any difference, and certainly didn’t delay the wedding.

Justmuddlingalong · 04/02/2019 10:38

Has anyone been in this situation?
With a budget of £1000? No, probably not.

AnneLovesGilbert · 04/02/2019 10:43

You don't earn a lot and his budget, saved over 3 months, of a grand, isn't enough to buy you what you want?

Not sure what the confusion you speak of is tbh. Mine cost a lot less than that, it's stunning and I love it. You know what else? I love the man who gave it to me a lot more.

Do you want to be married?

astoundedgoat · 04/02/2019 10:44

If you're delaying marriage because you're fussing about the ring, I would say you subconsciously don't want to get married at all, you just want a diamond ring to show off. I don't mean this bitchily, just that perhaps you should postpone getting engaged until you are sure.

FWIW I paid for my own wedding and engagement ring because I didn't think that my then fiance needed to put cold hard cash down on the table for us to get married. He hadn't a bean to his name then, and we have a fabulous marriage 15 years on.
