Cant call DP by his name!!

Does anyone find it hard to call their DH/DP by their name?
I've been with DP for 6 years but from very early on we have referred to each other by pet names (urgh, hate that expression)not to other people you understand, cos that would just be !
We dont have a problem with it, its just a strange quirk that we share! but it can be embarassing if i slip and call him it in public (its not really a socially acceptable thing to call someone).
What i do find odd is that i almost physically cant call him by his actual name, it feels very wierd when we're in company and i have to say it, its bizarre.

I'm the same. I find it a very strange thing and can't explain why but totally understand what you mean!

StinkyPete · 10/06/2007 11:17

jeremy, you have to tell us what you call him now

NuttyMuffins · 10/06/2007 11:17

I was the same, don't even know why but i was with xp for 10 years and could probably count on one hand how many times i called him by his name.

If i needed him for something i just shut in his direction or actually go up to him LOL.

Me too - if I am upstairs I shout "sweetie" or else ask one of the kids to shout for him. He has a perfectly normal name but I just can't bring myself to call him by it - weird

HonorMatopoeia · 10/06/2007 11:22

The only time I really call DH by his name is when I'm yelling for help! Apart from that I've only ever called him 'Babe' or 'Hon' Although, to be perfectly honest I hardly call anyone by their real name, most people are 'Chick'or 'chuck'. I get this from my Dad who calls everyone 'Chap'! Odd isn't it?!

Flame · 10/06/2007 11:31

Similar here - DH has been "Boy" for as long as I can remember... some friends call him it too when they are talking to me about him.

burstingbug · 10/06/2007 11:32

It's very rare we call each other by our real names, it's always 'sweetie' or 'mummy', 'daddy'. DS1 has picked up on 'sweetie' now nd copies us by shouting 'eetieee'

JeremyVile · 10/06/2007 11:45

Phew......
Im not (quite so) wierd after all!
Its really awful if i have to call out him in the supermarket or something, I open my mouth but nothing comes out cos my brains frantically running through the options
his name? nope, just absolutely no'
the "pet name" genuinely not socially acceptable so no. (StinkyPete - No!)
or darling which i also call him, but thats mostly used when in company, friends family etc.
And to be honest if i heard some woman in tesco trying to get her OHs attention by calling "Darling" even i'd be likely to to make vomity noises at her!
So i usually end up just calling "Hello?" Which everyone in the vicinity think i might be talking to them!
Cant win!!

What is it? shall we guess???

fuckface?

I tend to call mine stoopy (short for stupidhead) I have no idea how it developed. He tends to call me dimbo, because I'm a bit dim.

JeremyVile · 10/06/2007 16:47

If it was indeed FuckFace i'd be more than happy to say!!
Trust me, best not to know

OMG, I could not believe it when I saw this thread. I had concluded that I must have a very weird psychological problem because I cannot call dh by his name either. It's made more embarrassing by the fact that the kids have noticed How the heck do we get around it????

BreeVanDerCamp · 10/06/2007 16:57

adath · 10/06/2007 21:17

I find it hard too it just sounds really starnge coming out of my mouth. Call him all sorts (not all pleasant either lol) and I definately cannot call him what everyone else calls him. Since he was a kid people around here have always calles him by an abbreviation of his last name and I have never ever called him that.

My EMIL asked FIL to change his name from harold to John when they got engaged

bet she was best pleased when we named ds3 after him LOL!

4ameternal · 12/06/2007 21:45

This is so weird to read. Me and DH didn't call one another by our first names for 7 years. I thought we were the only ones, that there was something not right. Then (for other reasons) we went to Relate, and for some reason, by discussing the other stuff we started using our names. We didn't talk about it, and haven't since, but it just seemed to happen. I thought we were freaks, but hooray, there's others out there!

Is his nickname Johnny Fart Pants?
