Just wondering. I know some people in this situation and I think it is having an effect.

How much of a man's self esteem is tied up in being the main or sole breadwinner?

I said a amount of sympathy,WWW, don't get too wound up . Of course both should do it.

That's what I thought - I think the woman who asked HR about it (I haven't yet) might just not have asked all the right questions, or asked the wrong person.

What you describe sounds more like the way I would have contrued the policy (there is one in writing but it suggests that the WHOLE amount is discretionary which just can't be correct).

I do think the twelve months refund on exit policy a bit punitive - especially if you only take between three and six months ML.

I am entitled to my sabbatical leave this year and am thinking of adding this to my ML - although half of it is unpaid.

Yes, a transactional lawyer. I already have enough deals on my desk to take me through to June so any overruns might be tricky to negotiate. Are you also?

I suspect we may have leapt off topic somewhat but as the rest of the thread has gone quiet hopefully it does not matter.

No only six months.

Australian but long time resident in the UK. I joined an antipodean thread yesterday in the "Living Overseas" section but seem to have killed it.

Most people in the country are on 60% pay for 6 weeks and then the £112 a week. A few rare employers pay more. Having had to pay two nannies their SMP etc it is not welcome, complex and a huge burden on small employers even if ultimately you can claim back that statutory element. It's finding a nanny to cover in the interim etc which is hard too.

I must have worked in some enlightened places. No one ever assumed Id have babies and leave. I know loads of women in the city with children who work full time. Perhaps I've just had a warped view of things through luck.

This thread seems to have moved on since I last looked at it, I don't want to interrupt the flow! Just wanted to say:

Anna8888-thanks for your comments. You are right, but I have lost the other elements that make up 'me' lately. I had better find myself again soon!

Anna8888 · 22/03/2007 08:40

teabags - good luck
