It's nearly Christmas, I have wine, I'm watching in tears as usual

Just feeling sorry for myself that it's never going to happen for me...

That's it really!

Ah well.

My favourite film. Love the Adam/Keira unrequited love scene and the cleaner. I'm handing in my man card.

ChestnutsRoastingOnAnOpenFire · 16/12/2016 07:28

The scriptwriter deserves to be shot. Who talks like these characters in real life?

mummytime · 16/12/2016 07:38

ET can do other characters it's just a shame she hasn't been cast in something that required it for a long while. Her performance in Tutti Frutti was great.

RubyWinterstorm · 16/12/2016 07:42

I love and hate this film in equal measures.

I find the Laura Linney and Brazilian model bit hard to watch (though it is good)

The BT guy thing makes me laugh as it is so improbable (as if!) and it is more about the friendship/love between him and his mate.

Bill Nighy is excellent

Hugh Grant and Tiffany is just too unbelievable.... the whole class thing. It could never happen Wink but I like her coat (bought a similar one myself )

The porn star stand-ins to me is boring (boring people)

The boy (Sam?) looks just like my boys so makes me go awwww

The Portugese storyline I like, yes they never talk, but they always think the same thing and clearly connect on a deep level.

I don't like the "ugly" sister storyline...

Yes my misogynist radar bleeps during this movie, but the bit that really grates is the HG/Tiffany thing... hurts to watch

I've had a (nice and mumsy) thing for Thomas Brodie-Sangster for years. There's something so sweet about him. And he's 26!!!

CorporalNobbyNobbs · 16/12/2016 10:27

Thomas Brodie Sangster is 26???! I thought he was still only about 15.

CorporalNobbyNobbs · 16/12/2016 10:28

He still looks young over in Westeros

iklboo · 16/12/2016 10:41

I know. 1990! He's going to get ID'd for life.

GeorgiePeachie · 16/12/2016 10:44

Last weekend I saw: PS I Love you, The Vow, The Time Travellers Wife and Love Actually.

I ended up severely dehydrated from crying. Sensible people would be watching with Wine or any beverage they choose. I just cried all day.

Kflori · 16/12/2016 12:02

Not really Love Actually, but "The Holiday" has exactly the same effect on me - Love that film, but do need wine and a box of tissues with me to cope with thinking it will never happen to me, lol

RubyWinterstorm · 16/12/2016 18:00

The problem with the Holiday is that I just don't buy Kate Winslet and Jack Black as a couple.

Zero chemistry.

Completely unlikely

That kills it for me

mushroomsontoast · 16/12/2016 18:10

Aww I love The Holiday! I totally get Kate Winslett and Jack Black as a couple. I just spend the whole time thinking "hmmm... Jack Black or Jude Law...?" For reference, on balance I'd choose Jack Black. It's the eyebrows...

MinceForBrains · 16/12/2016 18:18

I only watch The Holiday for the cottage p*rn.

I don't like how pathetic they make the female characters in it. Especially Kate Winslet's simpering doormatfest. In fact, all of the characters are hideous. Arghhhh.

happychristmaspoobum · 16/12/2016 18:23

I love LA and The Holiday.

Agree with Ruby the porn stars were a total waste of space, added nothing to the film.

I love the bits with Ant and Dec Xmas Grin Have the dvd and watch it all year round!!

TaintForTheLikesOfWe · 16/12/2016 18:23

What I don't get is the laboured attempt to portray Martine McCutcheon as obese. The bit where she says, 'Where the fuck is my fucking coat?' is awful too. They are trying to paint her as an obese sweary common person and it sort of makes no sense to me why they are doing it. It would have been adequate to portray her as a normal person but with just the cockney accent if they are trying to illustrate the pair are so mis-matched and yet love still blossoms between them or am I missing the point here?

RubyWinterstorm · 16/12/2016 19:40

Taint, yes, it grates

mustbetimeforacreamtea · 17/12/2016 06:08

I love the bit where Laura Linney brings the guy back to her flat and does the little jig of happiness before letting him in.

TheSquashyHatOfMrGnosspelius · 17/12/2016 06:38

Bugger. Because of this thread I am starting to see loads of issues with the film! Mustbe you are right, that bit was very good but Karl basically wasn't prepared to be with her because she was being so supportive of her DBro with MH issues? Ummm.....eh? As he left the office he was all wiftful and tearful because what? The beauty in the office that fancies him right back has something else going on in her life? Is that what is really happening in this section of the film? The love for the LL character for her brother is stronger than her urge to cut him off by not answering her phone and jumping Karl instead? I am mystified as to what this section is portraying. I wouldn't want to be with a shallow arse like Karl anyway if I was LL's character. I'm going to be dissecting it all now!

Ciutadella · 17/12/2016 07:13

I think my question may show i am very naive. AR gives et the joni mitchell cd. How does that lead her immediately to know he is having an affair? Why doesn't she entertain the alternative possibility that he is keeping the necklace back for christmas day?

Is it because she knows he's done the same thing before so realises with a sickening lurch that it's happened again (i don't think so because previously they have come across as a bit 'perfect marriage'y)?

Hooray, someone else remembers tutti frutti! Ah, That performance of 'from a distance' (tilda swinton i think?) ....

ravenmum · 17/12/2016 07:23

All the presents are under the tree. She opens the only one that is the right size and shape to be the necklace.

Does Karl really look sad and wistful? I thought he could just do the one pouty face.

TheSquashyHatOfMrGnosspelius · 17/12/2016 07:26

Ciutadella The fact that he signs himself as 'Bad Harry' makes me wonder if he has been unfaithful before. That along with (as a PP said) the ET character advises he 'Be careful' previously.

TheSquashyHatOfMrGnosspelius · 17/12/2016 07:27

We need Richard Curtis to come on and tell us what was intended or if we are all filling in the gaps. Grin

Ciutadella · 17/12/2016 07:45

Yes i see ravensmum - but incredibly naively, i have always thought well why wouldn't et just think he was keeping ithe necklace hidden to give her at a 'special time' over christmas? Ah well.
When does et say 'be careful' - is that just one day when he's off to work? That puts a different light on it i suppose - i have always thought she is utterly shocked because she thought they had a great marriage, but 'be careful' suggests that maybe this is one in a long line...
Time for me to watch it again - good thing christmas is nearly here!

TheSquashyHatOfMrGnosspelius · 17/12/2016 07:55

IIRC 'Be careful there' is said after the Christmas party. I think ETs character (Karen?) says it after Harry dances with Mia. I think Karen says something like 'Mia is pretty' Harry makes some non committal noise and she then says 'Be careful there'. Receiving the CD set is instant evidence that the necklace has gone elsewhere and Karen has been there before I suspect. It's been a while since I saw the film though and this may all be in my head Grin

TheSquashyHatOfMrGnosspelius · 17/12/2016 07:58

Ravenmum I think Karl looks wistful and regretful as he leaves the office when they are both working late (and LL has plastered herself in makeup) he almost hesitates but decides to leave as he doesn't want a relationship with LL as she is so involved with her DBro.
