It's nearly Christmas, I have wine, I'm watching in tears as usual

Just feeling sorry for myself that it's never going to happen for me...

That's it really!

Ah well.

Anyone know if it will be on again soon?

liebstraumNo3 · 15/12/2016 16:56

It's on Christmas Day on ITV

OliviaBenson · 15/12/2016 17:06

Omg, I didn't realise that about Snape actually shagging her. It was bad enough when I thought it was an emotional affair.

What were the stories/actors which were cut out?

I watched it the other day and cringed my way through it. Loved it when it first came out.

BantyCustards · 15/12/2016 17:51

Avoiding all romantic Christmassy stuff

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 15/12/2016 19:12

I think ET was friends with Liam Neesons wife, wasn't she?

Hardshoulder · 15/12/2016 19:41

Oh, help me out here.

When Bill Nighy returns from Elton John's party to declare his love to his 'fat manager', is he actually declaring romantic/sexual love, or deep platonic love?

I've always assumed the former, but it occurred to me this time that (a) it's a pretty non-specific declaration (b) there's no indication either of them is actually gay/bi and (c) at the end, Bill Nighy arrives at the airport with what is clearly the latest in a line of identikit blondes (or a beard?)

scaredoffallout · 15/12/2016 19:47

Definitely platonic love.

GooodMythicalMorning · 15/12/2016 20:19

Platonic definitely

prettygirlincrimsonrose · 15/12/2016 20:48

First time I watched it was in the cinema after visiting DF in hospital when he had cancer. He's fine now but watching it always takes me back to being an 18 year old who was scared about losing one of her parents so the bit with Liam Neeson's stepson calling him dad always sets me off.

faffalotty · 15/12/2016 20:59

My comment about why doesn't she LTB, wasn't meant that I don't understand why the character wouldn't, but I'm angry at the way the film lets him off the hook. Although as others have said it is all rather misogynistic

ohdearme1958 · 15/12/2016 21:02

ldn't, but I'm angry at the way the film lets him off the hook

It portrayed real life in that not everyone ends their marriage if their partner has had an affair.

Bogeyface · 15/12/2016 21:08

And it happened in such a short space of time. She found out a few days before Xmas just as they were about to leave for the kids big performance. She wasnt going to kick him out then. The scene where they are meeting him off the plane is rather amiguous, she could have agreed to bring the kids to meet him as thats what they always did as they are easing into seperated life, or they could be together and working on it.... I hope it is the former!

LostAtSea2 · 15/12/2016 21:36

Ok, I'm a bloke and I admit I like this film

I may even have blubbed once or twice at the closing credits when people are meeting loved ones at Heathrow. Too many years of overseas travel I think.

God only knows what I'd be without you.....

qumquat · 15/12/2016 22:14

I agree I hate the moment when ET tells a grieving LN to stop whining or he'll never get another shag. It always really bothers me as I love her character in the affair storyline.

The Laura Linney story kills me I can hardly bear to watch it.

rollonthesummer · 15/12/2016 22:24

so hate Egg from Teachers

Grin
MinceForBrains · 15/12/2016 22:46

I think the 'stop whining' bit is designed to show the nature of LN & ET's relationship and their personalities. Quite stiff upper lip & stoical but still tongue in cheek, trying to add a bit of [lighthearted] to a very heavy day. She (the character, I know it isn't real Wink) is obviously deeply saddened by the death of her friend. We do see her grieving through the film but she's trying to support the person in the eye of storm with a bit of 'normal'. Insensitive to some but if they have that sarcastic banter relationship then it is just her showing love, in a funny way.

Fuck. I don't even LIKE the film Grin

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 16/12/2016 00:04

Mince that's what I think too about that ET/LN interaction.

RubyBluesey · 16/12/2016 00:06

Never say never.........

Bogeyface · 16/12/2016 00:16

I agree.

I have a friend who, when she told me had had her MS diagnosis, I said something to that would sound in the most appalling bad taste and very insensitive to anyone else. She laughed her head off because she knows that thats how we do things, she would say the same (probably worse!) to me. If an outsider heard it then they would be horrified.

GiraffesAndButterflies · 16/12/2016 06:38

The "unsympathetic" sarcasm sets up the nature of their relationship. If she was all "oh poor you, shall I come over" then we'd wonder what was going on and AR (RIP Sad ) cheating on her would have less impact.
Also it takes away her support network- we see her with an incredibly busy brother who she can never talk to for more than 30 secs, and a bereaved best friend who has his own problems. So the fabled bedroom scene has all the more impact of loneliness.

Not that I've thought about this way too much or anything Grin

PossumInAPearTree · 16/12/2016 06:56

I've never watched it. I dislike smug films like Notting hill and four weddings. Actually maybe it's just Hugh grant I dislike. Is this film similar? Should I give it a go?

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 16/12/2016 06:56

I agree, it's all about the stiff upper lip and black humour we Brits excel at.

You can say the harshest things to the people closest to you. Because they know you don't mean it.

My friend was the same when my husband left. She sent me something really inappropriate, it was hysterical.

PossumInAPearTree · 16/12/2016 06:58

And I hate Bill Nighy and I hate Keira Knightley. Emma Thompson winds me up a bit as well.

I love Alan Rickman though.

faffalotty · 16/12/2016 07:08

Possum - you would hate it! It's very smug.
One thing that annoys me is that so many of the characters talk in the same way -ie Hugh Grant style
