2 different studies, same results :

time.com/3433014/men-women-dating-mid-20s/

time.com/3302251/9-ugly-truths-big-data-ok-cupid-book/

Doesn't make any sense, does it?

Fun and the yucky jobs, like clearing the drains and the guttering.

goddessoftheharvest · 29/08/2016 09:56

Don't forget the litter tray, and the bit under the sink that always smells funny

I think it's true about women now being able to support themselves can now choose a younger man just because they like them not because they can support them and their children. I do think women like a man who can support himself, whereas in general, men are less bothered about that ( until the divorce, when they forget about agreeing to their wives putting their careers on hold for them and bringing up their children!)

Shiningexample · 29/08/2016 10:07

Surely the underlying question is 'why do men pursue women who are out of their league (in terms of attractiveness)?

As pointed out by others the old deal was women traded youth in return for financial resources.
That was in the old days when women's access to power and status was severely curtailed....if you wanted to get on in life the obvious way was to align yourself to a man of means.
Problem with that is you are then beholden to said man, he has too much power and we all know how that can pan out.

Now that women can earn their own money they don't have much use for men, sure there is sex but there's no shortage of men willing to 'put out' now is there

Women, biologically, seek men with resources

Seeking men with resources is not a biological process but a social one.

Shining I think some men look at people like Leo DiCaprio and Peter String fellow and delude themselves into thinking that the 20 something hot young model is there because they love fat, commitment phobic middle aged men, rather than being there in order to have a good time on his luxury yacht and possibly further their own career!

BombadierFritz · 29/08/2016 10:35

research just out (yeah ok maybe it was in the daily fail :-) )shows biologically women seek out 2 men - the unreliable but good genetic material stud to father the child- and the dull reliable provider to raise said child. biology huh!

TheStoic · 29/08/2016 10:41

Seeking men with resources is not a biological process but a social one.

It's a biological urge for females to seek the best possible protection for themselves and their offspring. It's an evolutionary adaptation.

"It's a biological urge for females to seek the best possible protection for themselves and their offspring. It's an evolutionary adaptation."

Yes but it's a result of patriarchal society that the female looks to her husband for protection and resources.

There have been many other ways of seeking protection and resources in the past so ask yourself this: in a classic patriarchy, what do you need protection against and who controls access to the resources?

TheStoic · 29/08/2016 10:58

in a classic patriarchy, what do you need protection against and who controls access to the resources?

Oh I don't disagree with this at all.

But what do you think 'patriarchy' is founded on? Just...tradition?

TheLastRoseOfSummer · 29/08/2016 11:06

I see plenty of families and I can tell you that securing the best possible man to be the father of their children is clearly not a biological imperative for all women.

And the majority of threads on here are testament to it too.

Shiningexample · 29/08/2016 11:08

Posing the question 'Why do men of all ages want women in their early-mid 20's' suggests that women are passive creatures who defer to the wishes of men
Women pursue their own best interests despite the efforts of men to contain and control them for their own purposes

Some young women my feel that a relationship with an older man suits them but he'll have to bring something to the table, most of the 20 something women will reject most of the 40 something men.
If older men desire younger women then most of them will be disappointed

Shiningexample · 29/08/2016 11:12

Humans don't have instincts, all our behaviour is learned, usually when we talk about instinct or biological imperatives we are talking about beliefs and behaviours which have been so deeply internalised that they form part of an unconscious structure and they feel instinctive

TheLastRoseOfSummer · 29/08/2016 11:12

The other thing is, shining that women also grow up internalising the same narratives and exist within the same discourses.

On this thread alone there are women who believe it is inevitable.

Many of the older men will be disappointed, but the problem for the 40 something women is that you're destined to be picked by someone who believes they are 'settling' for you because they can't get what they really want.

Which is just a bit shit!

TheStoic · 29/08/2016 11:13

How can all our behaviour be learned?

How did it start?

Shiningexample · 29/08/2016 11:17

Indeed, but narratives shift and evolve over time, as people are able to collaborate and share ideas so narratives shift more quickly😊

Shiningexample · 29/08/2016 11:21

I agree that is an unhappy position to be in but perhaps these women will increasingly see that there are other routes to fulfillment and contentment besides forming a partnership with a man, or at least that it need not be the central theme of ones life😊

raisedbyguineapigs · 29/08/2016 11:25

Much of the patriarchal behaviour and the concept of the woman needing protection by the man stemmed from organised religion. It has not always been the case. We have had powerful women led societies all over the world. Organised religion, particularly the Abrahamic religions deifies virgins and villifies womens' sexuality, while allowing mens sexuality to be seen as a biological urge. It leads to a very confused attitude to women. They need to have sex, and therefore 'sin' in order to provide other little followers, and become mothers. I don't know how or why that started. But it's probably not biology.

raisedbyguineapigs · 29/08/2016 11:28

The biological imperative is to procreate, and to attract the mate that is most likely to procreate effectively. An enjoyment of sex is an essential part of that imperative to procreate. It has been made to be seen as dirty and slutty by religion.

TheStoic · 29/08/2016 11:32

Religion has been, on the whole, a tragedy for women.

But religions still had to spring from somewhere. As did patriarchies, and societies.

It all springs from biology. It springs from the fact that men are physically stronger than women. It's as simple as that.

Strength = power.

TheLastRoseOfSummer · 29/08/2016 11:37

But not all societies are patriarchal.

TheStoic · 29/08/2016 11:40

No. There are some exceptions to the rule.
