would you date a shorter man?

Sorry if been done before. Had a date last night with a guy I met on-line and when I got there he was a good few inches shorter than me. I had wedges on, though not huge ones and am 5'5''. It did put me off to be honest, and I feel awful for being so shallow as he was really nice, and good looking. I suspect he would still be shorter than me if I was wearing flats, help! Should I meet him again? Would you date a guy that's shorter than you?

Yes. I would and I am, despite only being 5ft 1 myself. He's a lovely guy and a bloody great shag

thegiddylimit · 05/02/2016 22:59

I'm 5'2" and have never met a man shorter than me so no. But DH is only 5'5" so not exactly tall. We save a fortune on childrens clothes because the kids take ages to grow out of things. Just think of the positives!

My cousin is 5'12" and her husband is shorter. They've been married over 20 years and have 3 kids. It seems to work!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/02/2016 23:00

I like tall.

Am 5'2 and dp is 6 foot. My tallest boyfriend was 6'4. I'd struggle to find a man shorter than me, but tbh wouldn't really like anybody less than 6'.

BeautyIsTruth · 05/02/2016 23:07

I'm somewhere between 5ft2 and 5ft3 so I'd say no just because they'd be very, very short for a man but it depends. If I really liked him then his height wouldn't matter.

I'm not bothered by height generally. I know women my height who only like 6 footers but that's a bit too tall for me (again, I equally wouldn't reject them if I really liked them but 6ft wouldn't be my "ideal" height). I've never dated a guy over 5ft8 although there's a guy I like who's 5ft11 and seems enormous to me!

Monty27 · 05/02/2016 23:14

It's certainly not all about lying down Confused (previous post ^^ there somewhere

Postchildrenpregranny · 05/02/2016 23:17

Have short (about 5ft 5") male friend happily married for over 40 years to a lady taller than him . He has bags of personality, is kind, funny intelligent and has had a vey successful (lucrative) career . What's not to like... Their children are all considerably taller than him .
Did have v tall/big friend at Uni who married 6ft 4" guy (partly)because he made her feel feminine . No idea if they are still together.
I'm 5ft 3" and found v tall men quite uncomfortable to walk alongside (DH is about 5ft 9")

FifteenFortyNine · 05/02/2016 23:20

Shorter than me? Yes. My height? Yes. Taller than me? Never. Eugh, just no. Sorry to be size-ist but that's how I feel.

mumofthemonsters808 · 05/02/2016 23:26

Not for me, but there again I'm 5"8, I've never even been attracted to a shorter man. For me, height symbols masculinity and I've always been attracted to a man taller than me. I always feel a bit sorry for a female with a shorter partner, they look so mismatched on photographs and I can't imagine what it must be like to not stretch my arms upwards when I kissed him, I couldn't see myself bending down.I know it's shallow but you can't help what you prefer.

Elledouble · 05/02/2016 23:32

I'd be less likely to fancy a short man, I think. I tend to like tall, skinny men with big ears! My boyfriend is 6'3" to my 5'9", so both on the tall side.

BuggersMuddle · 05/02/2016 23:32

Well it'd be unlikely to happen as I'm barely 5' so don't meet many women shorter than me, much less men.

I must confess I've always been attracted to quite tall men though. Exes all over 6' and DP is one of the shorter people I've dated at just over 6'. It wasn't planned that way as such (not like I turned down lots of charming short arses), although I obviously must have expressed an unconscious preference to only date people so much taller.

I think in the situation you describe, I would probably go for a second date. There's a fair bit of conditioning that men 'should' be taller, so I'd give it a shot to see if it's genuinely putting you off or is more a social conditioning thing iyswim. (I wouldn't string him along or anything, but no harm in a second date to see if the chemistry builds a bit).

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 05/02/2016 23:33

One of the mums at Dc's school is very tall, at least 6ft. She's lovely, and married to an even taller man - but he's an absolute dick. Ill-mannered, ignorant, a generally unpleasant man. I've always suspected she married him because he was one of the few men taller than her Blush

Offred · 05/02/2016 23:34

Height is irrelevant to me. Current BF is 6'4" but xh was the same height as me. If you like someone you like them.

LovelyFriend · 05/02/2016 23:41

Yes of course - if I fancied him.

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 05/02/2016 23:59

A lot of supermodels online tonight...

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 06/02/2016 00:03

Without sounding as shallow as a pudding. No

sparklesnpearls · 06/02/2016 00:12

Nah it puts me off, like to wear mi heels !

Roussette · 06/02/2016 00:37

No couldn't. I'm tall and sort of amazonian not fat, really! and have never been attracted to shorter men, can't help it. I feel like the man if someone is short.

DH is 6ft1 and perfect for me. Before he came along I dated a man who was 6ft4 and that was good at the time! Just can't imagine not reaching upwards to put my arms round his neck, anything else would feel weird!

Lovelydiscusfish · 06/02/2016 05:13

I really am amazed how many women are saying they feel like this - I'd always assumed it was an old fashioned stereotype which didn't have much basis in reality any more.
It's a good job men don't (I assume) feel the same, otherwise all heterosexuals would be locked in a desperate struggle to find a partner who matched them exactly in height, and dating would become nigh in impossible. (I'm unable to sleep, and so possibly overthinking this).

timeforabrewnow · 06/02/2016 05:40

Yes I would date someone shorter, and indeed married a man of 5'6'' when I'm 5'8''

And yes, all those saying 'I couldn't possibly date anyone shorter than me' are shallow.

seoulsurvivor · 06/02/2016 05:47

Hard to find anyone shorter than me (I'm 5'1") but it wouldn't bother me. I like short guys. My dad is an inch shorter than my mum and it doesn't bother them.

I think short men are passed by a lot just cos they are short. They might have every other quality but women just don't go for them because they're short. Short guys are therefore great value for money.

Fadingmemory · 06/02/2016 06:17

I am 5' 2". I would neither date someone shorter but nor would I date a very tall man for fear of looking and feeling like a small child!

FreakinScaryCaaw · 06/02/2016 06:30

Yes, I have a thing for Peter Dinklage.

Dh is 5' 10 and I'm 5' 8. If I wear heels I'm slightly taller. Never bothers us.

One of my closest friends is 5' 5 and he struggles to meet anyone.

Tangoandcreditcards · 06/02/2016 06:44

Yes. I have had 2 DCs with my DP who is 2 inches shorter than me (and I'm 5'8" so not ridiculously tall). I dated men of all shapes and sizes (from 5' to 6'7") before I fell for DP. Honestly not a deciding factor. (Although used to drive me crazy when online dating guys lied about their height - the dishonestly used to piss me off - but given how many on this thread would have overlooked them on that basis, maybe it's understandable).

Rebecca2014 · 06/02/2016 06:47

I'm 5,5 and dating a man about my height, he's 5,6. I wouldn't go any shorter than that because I wouldn't want date anyone shorter than me.

TyrannosaurusBex · 06/02/2016 07:18

I always, always went for very tall men (I'm 5'8") until DH, who is an inch or so shorter than I am. He has no problem with my wearing heels, but I suspect it helps that he is built like a brick outhouse and has the kind of career that guarantees he's always the one in the spotlight when we go out Grin
