So, he's completely ignored my text

I am supposed to be going out on a date on Sunday with a guy I met last week. So far all our conversations have been via FB but on Wednesday he gave me his mobile number. We dedn't speak yesterday so at about 8.10pm today I text him saying "How are you?" almost immediately he text back saying "Who is this?". I had forgotten at this point that I hadn't actually given him my number Blush. So I said "it's MarmiteandJam". Since then, nothing and it's now 10pm.

I'm obviously not going to text again but what should I do? What if he doesn't contact me? Should I cancel the date?

Its Friday night, he's probably out with his friends, so just isn't paying attention to his phone. I can go hours and hours without looking at mine.

If he didn't want to see you tomorrow he wouldn't have given you his number.

I don't think you should cancel the date because he hasn't texted back for 2 hours.

babyhammock · 13/01/2012 22:26

Personally, if he's fart arsing around and already not replying, I'd forget sunday..life's too short to waste ..sorry x

LizzieChickens · 13/01/2012 22:26

Maybe text again (tomorrow) saying, "Are we still on for Sunday?"

babyhammock · 13/01/2012 22:29

Oh I missed the bit where it's only 2 hrs Blush.... mmm in that case I'd just wait and see as he's probably just out x

marmiteandjam · 13/01/2012 22:32

I don't want to appear like I'm too needy IYKWIM. I think what I'm annoyed about is the fact that he replied once and is now not bothering. If he does mess me around then I won't bother with Sunday as I've had too many men mess me around in the past.

Have you arranged where and when you're going to meet?

Almostfifty · 13/01/2012 22:34

Sure it's his number? It might have a digit wrong.

AbbyAbsinthe · 13/01/2012 22:35

Is there a possibility that he's given you the wrong number?

QuintessentiallyShallow · 13/01/2012 22:36

Just forget him.

But I must say, "How are you?" is a pretty lame text. I never respond to "who are you" texts on principle. If you want to know how I am, you pick up the phone and call. And what about manners? If you are sending a first text to a virtual stranger, you sign off with your name. At the very least you say a few sentences, like "hi James, it is Joy, good to have your number, looking forward to seeing you sunday". Not just "How are you?" I find that bloody unimaginative and rude. Especially without your name included anywhere. It is just bad textiquette.

marmiteandjam · 13/01/2012 22:36

Yes, we've arranged where and when to meet.

Yes definitely the right number as that was my thought so I checked it carefully and it is the one he gave me.

I'm wondering whu did you text? As you already arranged a (first) date, you could come across already a bit needy (plus unoccupied on a friday) - I'm not saying it's wrong, but that's how a man who doesn't know you may perceive it. Why not leave it to him to chase you a bit?

marmiteandjam · 13/01/2012 22:39

I had been considering all day whether to text as I thought it would look better to have an "air of mystique" over the exciting things I could be doing. Oh well, he did seem rather keen on FB but if it's not meant to be then it's not meant to be. I will just have to wait and see. The perils of dating and all that Grin

Bloody hell, I often don't check my phone for hours, sometimes days. He's maybe on a date or out with mates.

AbbyAbsinthe · 13/01/2012 22:40

Definitely don't text him again.

ecclesvet · 13/01/2012 22:42

Don't see the problem, really.

You opened the correspondence with the topic 'how are you?'
Then he countered with the topic 'who is this?'
Then you answered that topic by answering who you were.

As far as I would be concerned, the correspondence had been closed. He's not ignoring you.

I love dissecting these petty rules, it's so Seinfeld-ian. Grin

Oh thanks vivalabeaver kick a girl when she's down Wink

I don't think your date will be happening. Sorry OP

Vanishers. Well known dating twats that blow hot, then cold, then vanish, and sometimes reappear weeks later like nothing happened.

overmydeadbody · 13/01/2012 22:49

Firstly, I agree with Quint, I would probably not reply to a boring text like How are you? With no name or anything for a virtual stranger.

I also agree with ecclesvet, the conversation was over, did you just want a texting backwards and forwards thing? Because if he was out with friends, or even in or his own playing playstation or whatever, he might just be too pre-occupied for that.

Go on the date on sunday, meet him, and then make your judgements Grin

marmiteandjam · 13/01/2012 22:51

So maybe my text wasn't very well thought out then. I've been out of the dating game for a year so I will use that as my excuse Blush. If I have heard nothing by tomorrow lunchtime then I will have to make a decision as to whether to go or not I think.

solidgoldbrass · 13/01/2012 22:54

Where are you going for the date? I don't mean announce the exact location so a load of nosy MNers can turn up and cackle I mean are you going for a drink, a meal, a walk in the park, to the pictures? If it's somewhere nice and enjoyable like a pub with live music or to see a good film then go along, and enjoy it yourself if he doesn't show.

marmiteandjam · 13/01/2012 22:59

We're meeting in a bar and then going for a meal which he has booked. Unfortunately not really something I would like to do on my own but I could always take myself off to the pics if I get stood up!!

OP posts:
VivaLeBeaver · 13/01/2012 23:01

Sorry, maybe wasn't thinking. Don't know why but thought you'd met on a dating site, when that was never mentioned at all. So just assumed you might not be the only one he was taking out, but am wrong. He's prob out with his mates, or just not sure what to say back.

solidgoldbrass · 13/01/2012 23:03

Go along to the bar, with a good book or your Nintendo or something. Have a drink or two and chill. Then if he doesn't appear, going to the pictures would be a fun thing to do.

marmiteandjam · 13/01/2012 23:08

Lol at the Nintendo Grin. Hopefully I'm worrying about nothing. I think that some people just don't write much in texts so maybe he didn't feel the need for a long conversation. However, can't say for definite as I don't really know him. I hope the date does go ahead though as we're supposed to be going to my favourite restaurant Grin

OP posts:
saladcreamwitheverything · 13/01/2012 23:10

He wouldn't have gone to the trouble of actually booking a meal if he wasn't bothered would he?

Maybe I'm soft but is it a possibility he was on his way out and forgot to take his phone/no signal/no battery?

See what happens tomorrow before you write him off! Smile
