I have given birth to a demon

DD gave DS a birthday present recently

Said birthday present consisted of her old IPOD shuffle, which was no longer required

DS was very grateful

Say what you will about hand-me-down birthday presents but they are not particularly thoughtful IMO

But then she compounded this by STEALING what was now her brother's IPOD shuffle, and SELLING it on Ebay

Suggestions?

Bronze, I wouldn't worry. My nephew is probably one of the less wealthy ones at his school and hasn't felt like that at all. As I said upthread, he has second hand computers which he does his homework on...he's fourteen and has just started GCSE's. Presumably youre using a pc which he could use? Or is it a netbook or phone? But anyway, you could get a reconditioned cheap computer, you only need basic programmes on it and internet access. He doesn't even have a mobile...which probably is a bit unusual, but certainly he hasn't been made to feel inferior because of it. Just work on your ds's self esteem so that he can be proud of himself, regardless of wether he owns a laptop or not, if you need to!

Pedallleur · 14/05/2011 19:51

Bronze, I work at a Uni and we have academics and management trying it on all the time for Iphones/Pads and MacBooks just to play games/get email and word process. All this hi-tech stuff is just smoke and mirrors for people (generally men) to w*nk off on. You just need a pc with i-net access and a reasonable amount of memory. Plug-in large capacity hard drives are coming down in price all the time and the school will have good facilities I should think

She is a smart cookie. And she is insistent on downloading application forms for Junior Apprentice - just as soon as she is old enough. Can't believe that came in from the ether, amazing! She is pretty demonic though.

ROFL at BOF, and Bronze - don't worry, really don't. My DCs (even DD at her worst) have never ever judged someone for what they have or haven't got. They tend to value people by how funny they are (which could also be worrying, but let's not go into that).

Quatro.. I've been noseying at this thread, and for all the gadget related flaming you've been getting (and I might have missed this in the thread) what I would love to know is... what was your dd's excuse for flogging her brother's gift and did she suggest how to rectify it and was she happy or gutted or did she not see any problem? (Just coz I'm nosey! Grin)

Incidentally, I'm 30 and I have a £29.99 nokia phone!!!!

groak · 14/05/2011 20:07

And I have to use dh's laptop! Will you be my mum too? Grin

BitOfFun · 14/05/2011 20:09

There's a queue, mate!

Quattrocento · 14/05/2011 20:09

Happy to adopt anyone who promises not to nick stuff :) Excuse? There was no excuse. She said he didn't really use it - this was true, but still no excuse IMO. Awful behaviour, truly awful.

I'm under retirement age and don't have a blackberry or an iphone.

groak · 14/05/2011 20:42

Yeah, there is a queue, and I'm at the front of it! Grin

Honestly, Ill be the best sort of sibling your dcs have ever had!

Ilythia · 14/05/2011 20:43

I'm only halfway down the thread but feel the need to point out that at least half of the 11 year olds in my school (in a not very well off area) have iphones or blackberries or an ipod. They sneer at my HTC, so a 13 yr old with an ipod, iphone, macbook is nothing out of the ordinary, so lay off Quattro.

Ilythia · 14/05/2011 20:51

oh okay, it moved on a bit making my post redundantGrin

She is a madam though, I want to know what she spent the money on?

And second had ipod as present is not bad imo, if your DS was happy with it then fair enough.

Pedallleur · 14/05/2011 20:53

I'm not bothered if someone wants to lavish expensive tech on their kids - if Quattro has the money then it's her business but allowing a child to use a credit card in someone else's name and internet accounts illegally is both dangerous for the family in terms of security, financial and personal and imo irresponsible.

hairylights · 14/05/2011 21:22

Could there be a teensy bit of spoiling here? Wtf dies a 13 year old have an iPhone for?

Quattrocento · 14/05/2011 21:40

Oh for goodness' sake. WTF does anyone need an Iphone for? Nobody needs an Iphone. We've done all that. Happy to recap though, for late entrants.

missmelo · 14/05/2011 21:46

I don't think its unusual that the girl has an Iphone at 13, she is lucky but not necessarily spoilt.

curiouselle · 14/05/2011 21:47

just wanted to add though I do think she needs tighter supervision of monetary internet dealings, I do think you should leave op be about the gagets. Yes we would all love a macbook, and may not be able to afford it but lets not be bitter about those who can.
I work in an inner city secondary school not in an affluent area. Any student who does not have suffcient access to a computer at home is provided a laptop from school for the entire time they are there as technology is that important. Work can be submitted electronically, teachers can be emailed for advice, and subject specific revision is sent on fab software. our children need access to this stuff to survive in our modern world - hell we do everything on line even get parenting 'support' Wink

electra · 14/05/2011 21:54

A 13 year old with an Iphone and an ebay account? Shock Crikey, I must be out of touch! I agree with those who say she has too much too soon and that she's obviously too young for it!

geraldinetheluckygoat · 14/05/2011 22:10

wow, really, Curiouselle? that's great!

Pedallieur, She wasn't "allowed" she did it secretly. Which isn't ideal, but these things do happen, teenagers are quite clever, on the whole Grin

geraldinetheluckygoat · 14/05/2011 22:12

I think its good that shes got an ebay account to sell all her unwanted stuff, I know kids that do this, it is a good way to raise the funds for things they want....cant really see the problem, unless they do something inappropriate with it. Which she has. But the OP has dealt with that so....

Quattrocento · 14/05/2011 22:21

I thought it was quite a practical thing at the time. But we've stopped Ebay now, so ...

ReindeerBollocks · 14/05/2011 22:33

Have to say Quattro has handled this thread really well. Hats off to you, you've taken some comments on board re usage and freedom.

To be honest I think you dealt with the initial situation quite well, and I think her brother may enforce the message a lot Grin.

They sound like normal teenagers IMO. The gadgets sound fairly standard and, dare I say it, with their humour and tech knowledge they sound rather good, instead of demonic (but obviously all teenagers have their demon moments, it's a teenage right of passage).

bronze · 14/05/2011 22:45

I would just like to point out I asked Quattro to adopt me first so I am at the front of the queue but only if shes giving out gadgets

TheFlyingOnion · 15/05/2011 08:43

"teachers can be emailed for advice"

crumbs curiouselle I can't be the only teacher who doesn't fancy being on-call 24hrs?? Confused
