Hello.

I'm Mouse. Smile

We are a Bus load of posters with various relationships with the demon booze. Some are sober, some are not and some are inbetween.

So come say hi and meet the rest of The Babes, there's always plenty of room on the Bus, the doors are ALWAYS open.

No judgy pants are worn on this journey, pants yes and even the odd Tena Lady but always of the non judging variety. Grin

Ok here goes, I'm going to pluck up my courage and jump on the bus before I change my minds. I'm upsylazy and I need to stop drinking - not cut down for a little bit and convince myself it's under control and then watch it creep up and up again until I end up with constant blackovers and hangovers. I drink aroung 90 units a week I reckon.
This morning I woke up feeling Ok and, when I went to wash my hair, found a huge lump the size of a golf ball on the back of my head which was really sore and definitely wasn't there last night. DH is not talking to me and it's too humiliating to ask him what I did.
I've got to sort this out but I'm so scared. Have to go now as at work but will be back this evening to say hello to you all.

dementedma · 05/04/2011 13:18

just read back a bit and realised isindie is driving!! LET ME OUT!!!

"Btw, does anyone else find they've replaced the alcohol with something else they now find hard not to do too much of? In my case it's work, which is quite positive but I'm a bit worried I don't seem to 'switch off'! Any tips?"

I think that happens a lot and there's only so much you can do about it. The longer you stay sober, the more spare time and focus you will have for other things and you will be able to sort them out then.

Also, I drink far too much coffee and i'm only now starting to cut down on that. But I've never been barred from Caffe Nero ...

JaneS · 05/04/2011 13:21

Hello upsylazy. Great name! Grin

Will be good to see you when you're back from work.

MIFLAW · 05/04/2011 13:22

Upsylazy

You've just done the hardest part. You won't believe me but it's true.

From here on it it just gets easier, if you'll let it.

Welcome.

JaneS · 05/04/2011 13:23

Oops, sorry MIF, didn't see your post. Grin at the idea of being barred from Cafe Nero (though their coffee is truly foul!). Is coffee not quite bad for the liver too? I'm asking because I too am drinking shedloads ... not sure if it's something else I should worry about.

It's good to know this is something that you're saying will gradually sort itself out, though. It just feels very strange atm.

MIFLAW · 05/04/2011 14:07

"Is coffee not quite bad for the liver too? I'm asking because I too am drinking shedloads ... not sure if it's something else I should worry about." Yeah, probably it is.

But it doesn't cause many mental illnesses, road accidents, divorces, sections under the Mental Health Act, incidents of choking on own vomit, mortgage defaults ...

An excellent piece of advice I was given very early on (at the time I was worried about my smoking) was "address your problems in the order they're going to kill you." Unless you are cross addicted to heroin or coke, that's probably always going to mean putting alcohol first and focussing on that until you're confident it's sorted - not that you can drink again, but that, if you think about drinking again, you're going to know you're being silly and have strategies in place not to act on the thought.

Incidentally i stopped smoking about a year after I stopped drinking and have never touched it since.

CailinBainne · 05/04/2011 14:22

MIFLAW that's sound advice... I like that and may use it at some point

Thanks for the welcome, you're a pretty damn inspiring bunch of people waves to you all

Yes it's an Irish name (I'm not Irish, I'm Yorkshire but live in Ireland where drinking heavily is a way of life)

Ironically I used to work in addiction counselling helping people addicted to prescription meds to reduce and come off them...then go home and open a can of lager...hypocritical in the extreme !!!

I drink less than I used to (getting old catching up with me) but still do it more out of need than out of choice.

Afternoon Babes. Smile

Well, Nemo is still not great, not great at all infact. His nurse is coming out to see him tomorrow so may have some suggestions as to what I can try to ease his breathing. I really don't want to have to site an NPA (breathing tube) but if he needs it he needs it.

He had physio this morning and they want to keep him on the books so to speak, until his education assessment in Autumn.

So, a few new/returning faces to The Bus. Hello Cailin, lovely to meet you. Smile

Nice to see you back witchity

Welcome upsylazy well done on posting.

Been out in the blustery wind fresh air and decided to come back for a nice cuppa tea. Grin

IsinDe - nice to hear you actually got some sleep last night, well done you! Do you feel better for it sweets?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ZANY!!!! Hope you are having a fab day.

Having a bit of a wobbly day. Does anyone else get the urge to just get totally wasted and switch your head off for a day? Just that way out I think.

"Yes it's an Irish name (I'm not Irish, I'm Yorkshire but live in Ireland where drinking heavily is a way of life)"

It's important to remember that it might be A way of life but it's not THE way of life. Not only is AA, in Britian and in Ireland, full of Irish, meaning at least some of them abstain; it's very easy to kid oneself on these matters. I used to be a TEFL teacher. For years I knew that TEFL teaching - lots of young, single people paid in cash - was a big drinking culture.

Then I got sober and worked in TEFL again. I started actually watching what others did, rather than simply checking if I was alone in the pub at last orders. I found that, even on payday, many staff went nowhere near the pub; and that, of the rest, most would leave after a couple of drinks. The "big drinking culture" turned out to have be just me and two other blokes drinking to excess on a daily basis while everyone else got on with real life.
