Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd have liked to hear more of Pip's and Stella's wedding vows, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-12-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Several people on the previous thread, and probably the spoilers thread, have rhymed Vince with mince, so credit to all of you! As I start this thread, we don't know what's going to happen to Vince, and it's looking as if Sunday night is going to last all week, or a good chunk of it. Ah well. We have to put up with this kind of thing every few years. I cling to my belief that the SWs aren't going to kill off another of Elizabeth's partners in a horrific accident - but of course they could be toying with us!

Josh has returned from Patagonia sounding strangely changed by his time abroad. Hmm (Angus Imrie is presumably too busy, or perhaps fed up with the limited storylines given to Josh up to now, so the part has been re-cast.)

Will the Brookfield inheritance row start up again now? I do hope so. Josh has been very badly short-changed by his parents' decision to leave the farm to Pip (and Stella). Surely they could have taken the same approach as Pat and Tony and involved both children (with separate provision for Ben, who's not interested in a farming career)?

Over to you!

@EBearhug , God no! The unconvincing TWFL SL was bad enough.

42 days. Baby Grundy was born on 25 Sept IIRC.

Personally I’d welcome a well-written, well researched, trans storyline.

I wouldn't. As @TeenToTwenties pp, too hot a topic.

Edited

I wouldn't either. Not because I think it's too hot a topic, but simply on a practical level.

As so much of trans people's feelings seem to be about how much they try to make themselves look like their idea of the opposite sex, how on earth does that work on radio? There would have to be lots of ridiculous comments about their hair and dress etc. Plus the huge problem that radio drama is based on the voice, and there would be a man with a man's voice playing a trans woman, it's all just too silly, and simply wouldn't work.

I rather like Storm. It's not perhaps as unusual as Amber thinks though. There was a Storm - and a Tyger - (both male) in my son's class at school and he's now in his 30s.

I wouldn't worry about Vince's feelings. After his appalling behaviour when Chelsea was pregnant, I'm surprised anyone has ever worried about his feelings again. Plus, if the poor man has lost the ability to walk, he's hardly going to forget about the storm whatever George and Amber's baby is called.

I was listening to TA when Shula and Kenton were born but I was only 4 at the time and wasn't paying as much attention as I might have been. Do we know why Jill chose such odd names? Hardly typical names in the 1950s.

I do know someone who was born in 1958 who has Kenton as his middle name, but his mother always swore it was nothing to do with TA and she chose it because it means "Man of Kent" (where they lived). That can't have been Jill's reason for choosing it though, can it?

It's a locality in London next to Harrow. I don't think the name is connected with Kent.

The letters were alphabet blocks, I think. The BBC would not have broadcast a brand name.

the stereotypes I find the 'gender neutral' modern names suggest parents of a lower socio-economic background.
Predictive nomenclature?

EBearhug · Today 12:29

Isn't there some novel written about the different lives someone leads, reliving time with his different possible names?

Every1ElseInKnowsley · Today 12:46

Virginia Woolf's Orlando, wasn't it?

LaMarschallin · Today 12:53

I've only come across Storm as a girl's name (both in books).
Plus "Stormy" as in Daniels, as DH has just reminded me.

Only if a sheep wants to live as a cow.

LaMarschallin · Today 13:11

That book looks really interesting, @TottersBlankly

LillianGish · Today 13:14

I think Storm is exactly the sort of name Amber would choose - personally I only know female Storms which might have put the old George off. Obviously he’s a new man now. I’m looking forward to Storm eventually getting a job in the tearoom so we can say Storm’s brewing or even taking over the Terum and renaming it Storm in a Teacup. . In any case it sound like it will be an excellent name for future thread titles. I should add I’m also impressed TA managed to coordinate their fictional storm with an actual storm.

Sidebeforeself · Today 13:23

Or when he eventually leaves Ambridge “Storm’s out or Storms’ off”?

ExitPursuedByABare · Today 13:27

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · Today 11:32

I wouldn't.

Hell me neither.

ExitPursuedByABare · Today 13:30

I quite like Storm for Baby Grundy. But I speak as someone who would have needed some dissuading from calling my DD October had I known she would have been a week overdue.

RegimentalSturgeon · Today 16:30

Gonners · Today 11:44

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g For what it's worth I think the baby will end up being called Joe.[

Or Bartleby.

“I’d rather they didn’t.”

JudyCoolibar · Today 16:31

Darker · Today 07:17

‘Storm’ feels a bit tactless. The baby was presumably safe at home with Amber and George while traumatic and damaging things happened to others, including their close Grundy relatives. The name will be a reminder to many of a day when a lot went wrong.

Well, exactly. I know this was a fictional storm, but we know from the experience of the last few days that storms can and do kill and maim people, to say nothing of destroying their livelihoods.

JudyCoolibar · Today 16:35

So is George going to go seamlessly back to driving now? Surely his insurance would be prohibitively expensive?

Madcats · Today 16:57

If the baby is called Storm, I do hope he becomes a feisty toddler so that we can have some rather fabulous thread titles. I'm not sure I'll still be Mumsnetting by the time he reaches adulthood.

BTW Storm Jameson was born Margaret Ethel Jameson (daughter of William Storm Jameson and his wife, Hannah Margaret Galilee). She has a Hall of Residence at Leeds Uni named after her.
