Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to administer Bert's mucus medicine, or other unusual views.

One of the many lovely things about the Calmac breakfast which I will no longer be eating on my way home to London is that it is piping hot. Surely a fried breakfast has to be to be appetising. However, I've been on MN and other nooks and crannies of the internet too long so have seen some extraordinary claims about the way the general public can behave when they feel they have a grievance. One of my favourites was from a woman who said she owned a holiday cottage which was right on the beach. A family complained that they had booked it because of the lovely pictures which showed the waves lapping on the sand pretty near the cottage but once they arrived they found that the sea was sometimes further away. They felt they should have been warned about this in advance.

Agreed! Can you imagine the AIBU now?

AIBU to feel that I should report my DD's school to Ofsted and complain to my MP? We live in the same road as an abattoir, please don't judge, I know it's not ideal but it was cheap and it's really not too bad, though I don't often tell anybody where we live for obvious reasons. DD's biology teacher somehow found out our address and instructed her to go in and collect a bag of eyes - yes, you read that rightly - and bring them with her on the bus so that the class could dissect them. I don't even know where to start with how many things are wrong with this ...

To be very slightly fair to the Maliks, it must be extremely hard not to be over- protective of a child who had leukaemia. I know that Azra will know logically and professionally that an emotional trauma is not going to bring it back, but having that fear hanging over you must be awful.

I remember a couple of years ago when a vehicle parked on the beach was washed away when the tide came in. There was a thread about it on MN and, although most people thought it was stupid to have parked there, several posters claimed they did not know about tides. How is this even possible?

I think there are (and always have been) people who feel no curiosity about the world, don't notice what's going on around them and feel aggrieved when this causes problems, which of course are other people's fault for not making sure they knew these obvious, important things.

There was a chap who drove a 4x4 on to the beach at Margate to pick up a jet-ski. A bit of water got into the electrics, and so a mate of his drove a van down to tow him out and that got stuck in the sand. A large crowd watched with interest as a very high tide came in.

There was nothing the coastguard or RNLI could do but roll their eyes and tell them to wait for the tide to go out. I don't know what happened to the jet-ski!

Maybe it's to do with generations who have never had a UK seaside holiday but have akways gone to the Med. I don't remember ever not knowing about the tide.

Yes, but they are tiny little tides ... hardly noticeable really!

According to Google only 20-40cm, which is nothing like the UK where again according to Google can be up to 14metres at max location.

That's interesting- I have only been to the Mediterranean Sea about twice (Barcelona and Ceuta,) so I don't really know. Is it shielded by the straits of Gibraltar or because it's further from the poles or what?

I can see if you're used to that, then British tides would be a shock.

Google says:

The Mediterranean Sea has tiny tides (20–40 centimetres) because it is a nearly landlocked, enclosed basin connected to the Atlantic by the narrow, shallow , which blocks large tidal bulges from entering

Yes, it's because the Med pretty much landlocked and the Strait of Gibraltar is narrow. If you sawed off Spain and Portugal and floated them into mid-Atlantic, that would make a difference.

I don't think they are as strong. I have no other explanation for people's ignorance though.

Because they have not explicitly been told about them at a point when they needed to know. Something needs 'human interest' for something to resonate with them.

People generally don't read much, don't look up things they don't understand or don't know much about.
At least I know enough to know I don't really know much at all.

And they are a vegetarian family.
So extra shocking to see the photos, but definitely not an excuse for Kalhil to act as he did. Except he's a teenager and still learning about life etc

Are they vegetarian? I recall Lynda cooking something vegetarian for them, but that was IIRC to avoid inadvertently put something haram in it.

I grew up by the sea, and have travelled a fair bit, so can bore for England on the matter of how tides are affected by the relative positions of the sun and moon if the episodes don’t improve!

The Snells’ guest was ODD. So odd, that it must surely have been written this way for a reason. The “you are both old and a Doberman isn’t suitable for old people like you”: Was that just plain rude or is it to prepare us for the Snells selling up and moving to London with their geriatric hound? In the weirdness that is Ambridge, they could pay Fallon to manage the place until they sell the business.

George still annoys me, but I’ve been enjoying his scenes for quite a while and think he and Amber act well together.

I was wondering was Diane long practiced at getting a B&B host to kick her out after she'd enjoyed bed and breakfast and without paying.
