@Gonners , you are married to my spiritual twin..

Gosh, do you want him? We're not married, and I can just pop him in the post - or maybe on the train. No charge!

FatRosie · 18/09/2026 22:20

Would love to but where would I put him?

Treetreetreetree · 19/09/2026 07:10

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime Everytime I visit the motorway services I think of Heather.

I remember her dying was very convenient given the chaos she was about to cause.

I am pretty minimalist in terms of hoarded crap but I really wouldn't mind if someone came round and said "Do you actually need this?" Right next to where I'm sitting there is a small bookshelf which contains approximately 60 foreign language dictionaries/phrasebooks. One of them is called "Reading menus in Japanese restaurants". This must be blamed on MrG, as I have never been to Japan. As for the French/Italian - Italian/French dictionary ... why? Just why? I cannot imagine an occasion where that might be useful in this house.

I think I would quietly bin at least some of those.

I'm sort of trying to do my descendants a favour by working through my bookshelves, and donating books I know I won't read again to charity shops, National Trust bookshops, and occasionally friends. The trouble is, it's a very slow process as I keep coming across old treasures and stopping to re-read them.

There are also some books that I know no-one will want, e.g. children's encyclopaedias my kids had pre-internet which I am sure are now badly out of date. I'm wondering whether schools might like them for children to cut out the pictures. Any teachers around who can tell me whether that's likely?

FatRosie · 19/09/2026 11:23

@JudyCoolibar , try GET. Can't get into their website right now but Global Educational Trust opens 'books for free' unit | Bucks Free Press

They have shops in various towns but that's my nearest, I think. There was a nearer one and it was great. Basically, it was run by volunteers and you could have up to three books for a donation.
It would take magazines, colour supplements and DVDS too.
They'd probably let someone take the encyclopaedias as a job lot.
Now all I need to do is load the car and go to Hi Wyc. Smile

I think I have about 20 books on my bed, and about 15 next to it. Two are in the process of being read, about 5 referred to.
I have a terrible habit of not quite finishing books to avoid passing the mon.

If there isn't a GET shop, try Oxfam Books shops or bins, or specialist charity bookshops. Or offer on Freecycle. Some people want to have a wall of books as decor.

New 'books for free' unit opens offering three complimentary titles

Global Educational Trust has opened its first 'books for free' unit in High Wycombe, which is also its first space in Buckinghamshire.

Does anyone in Ambridge read apart from when they had the book club?
If they do, do they spot similarities to their own lives?

What would they be reading?
I'll start with Jolene and Kenton reading Treasure Island.

TottersBlankly · 19/09/2026 11:41

Recently I think I heard one character say of another (maybe David / Leonard, or Pat / Tony) that they were listening to the radio. And I laughed inwardly, as I have done every time it’s mentioned, for the better part of sixty years.

I would know I’d arrived in Heaven if I ever heard an answer to that question …

Edited

That is really useful; thank you.

FatRosie · 19/09/2026 19:42

Thanks. Charity shops generally will take books but may struggle to sell them, so I try to not take many (2 or 3 quite sellable ones) at the same time. It's a bit sad to see a book I thoroughly enjoyed still there for weeks when they're only expecting 50p for it.

The GET shop is great. Lots of books you wouldn't normally see and all sorts of subjects - novels, classics, academic/educational, cookbooks, crafts, sports/fitness, children's books. They're run by volunteers so might have strange opening hours. The main volunteer said magazines/colour supplements are popular with places that have waiting rooms - the people waiting may have limited literacy.

Some supermarkets have 'honesty' bookshelves where you can leave or take a book. The ones I can think of are in large supermarkets (the one starting with T) in 'naice' nearby towns.

Didn't the village green phone box get made into a library?

HewasH2O · 19/09/2026 20:20

I have a book swap box at work which I keep filled. I ask that books are read, borrowed, swapped, passed on or donated.

It wasn’t a great advert for NHS geriatric wards (or wherever she was).

Why? She was comfortable, not in pain and told Alan she felt well cared for. She wasn't alone she was with a visitor.

Yeah to be fair the risk of dying after a hip fracture is a known one for the older adult population so not a dig at the NHS or care provided. RIP Carol

Apologies for my typos earlier. Blush
Next week looks a bit less of a hard listen (but does have Pip). Hope none of you were upset by Friday's episode. Flowers

Radio Times Ambridge Diary 20-25 September
There's nothing quite like a pregnancy to remind you of The Archers' real-time recording schedule. After an eventful nine months, it looks like Amber will go into labour any day now. With family tensions and money concerns now ironed out, will it be plain sailing for her and George? Pip and Stella's wedding plans hit a snag, as a mix-up involving Natasha sparks delicate family negotiations. Over at the Horrobins, Brad becomes a bone of contention, and when Ruth frets over a friend in need, Alan has to save the day.

TV Times 19th to 25th September
There are further wedding woes for Pip and Stella this week, after Natasha throws a spanner in the works. Elsewhere, it looks like Amber has gone into labour… but will it all go to plan? And when Ruth is worried about a friend, it may be Alan who saves the day. Also this week, Helen gets caught in the crossfire at the Horrobins’, Robert is under pressure and Kate embarks on a mission.

Total TV Guide 19th to 25th September
Crossed wires with Natasha throw Pip and Stella’s wedding plans into disarray this week, and the brides must decide whether compromise or negotiation can avoid putting noses out of joint. After a couple of false starts, it looks as if life is about to change forever for Amber and George when she goes into labour. Elsewhere in the Grundy family, Eddie is moved by an announcement. Ruth is worried about a friend’s potentially misguided actions. Step forward Alan… Meanwhile, the unassuming Brad finds himself at the centre of a heated debate into which Helen herself is reluctantly drawn. And while Kirsty finds herself getting cosseted, Kate’s latest undertaking causes misgivings for some.

9/10 - Helen attempts to keep the peace.

That will end in carnage, I tell you!

TottersBlankly · 20/09/2026 13:30

Thanks @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g!

Well, at least KD knows who the characters are …

And I see in following weeks Brian, and then Paul are to be revived. Such fun! 🤔

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/09/2026 08:45

Called this right, by the way. I expect many others did too, but I posted this a few days ago: Baby Jo(e) must surely have arrived. My money's on a girl called Josie Grundy because it would be confusing to have people keep talking about Joe Grundy (or Jo Grundy).

OP posts:
JudyCoolibar · 21/09/2026 08:52

National Trust second hand bookshops will also take books, but they told me politely that they only want naice ones that NT visitors might buy. So no Fifty Shades or graphic novels, I'm guessing.

Gonners · 21/09/2026 09:24

I hope Amber has a moment of sanity and registers the baby with her surname, Gordon. It will save time when they split up.

TottersBlankly · 21/09/2026 12:31

I predicted a Baby Grundy name so long ago I’ve forgotten what I said!

But Josie does sound likely.

FatRosie · 21/09/2026 12:47

Thanks @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g .
@Gonners , maybe Gordon-Grundy but definitely a Grundy.

It doesn't say where they are. The nearest one to me is at a stately home. Would I need to pay the entrance fee to the stately home to donate?

TherapistInATabard · 21/09/2026 16:54

On the Cider Shed podcast they mentioned Tim Bentinck almost dropping a clanger at some event - one of the archers at 75 things possibly. There was a question about the Brookfield ‘children’ and he said something like ‘of course, we’re getting a new…..’ then cut himself off. A new Pop is (unfortunately) unlikely, but I wonder if Josh will return with a new voice. An Argentinian one would be tremendous 😂. Son of whatsername does seem to be busy.

HewasH2O · 21/09/2026 17:13

We had Ben at our Live at 75 event who seemed very happily settled. Josh is feasible

Ooh! I suppose his mind couldn't have been on tractors.

Angus Imrie is in a Danny Boyle film due to be released in January. Maybe he's just too busy now.

I was told I could just drop the books in at the reception area/ticket office.

I've remembered to look for the new Radio Times...Celebrity Traitors starts Thursday week, if that is your sort of thing.

Ambridge Diary 27 September - 2 October
The latest Grundy has now arrived - and reality has set in for Amber, who has that new parent feeling of being out of her depth. Help may arrive from an unexpected source with their own complicated emotions about the situation. "Dirty Harry" Harrison has an awkward encounter and receives a few home truths from a mate, while Lynda spots an opening that could lead to a surprising new arrangement, which doesn't impress Brian- but then what does these days?
David Crawford

QN Did Brian sort out his caravan secure storage site? I remember gravel arriving at Bridge Farm, but must have skipped a few episodes.

NT bookshops are the best bit about visiting a property (though I concede that some are better than others).
