Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd like to marry Pip, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

So now we know who bonked George on the head. Will the stunning revelation Hmm lead to anything interesting or credible happening? Answers on a postcard, please!

Will Alice and Rex become an item? Will Amber come to her senses? Has Adam's constant languor and fatigue now removed his ability to speak on air?

Over to you!

@LightningMode , so we can recognise the voice? Isn't Stella's voice slightly estuary? Stella-actor was born in Croydon and has appeared in EastEnders.

What to wear to a rewilding wedding? That will be on Style and Beauty before you know it…

Definitely don't wear your beaver skin hat!

FatRosie · 19/02/2026 14:45

I'd be going as Kate in a hemp toe-dyed pair of dungarees and vegan rope-soled flip-flops.
Would we hear Kirsty wailing from an oxen-drawn haycart?

I meant tie-dyed but am leaving the typo there.

Will Lilian be in a fur coat?

He doesn't need to have a fake estuary accent to be recognisable. He sounds like a total yob whereas Stella's voice is much more neutral. Their accents are totally different, as if they weren't brought up together at all.

To be fair to Zach, it' s not quite correct to say that prenups are unknown in British law - https://www.goodwinsfamilylaw.co.uk/family-law-services/prenuptial-agreements/

Bit of a leap to go straight to xenophobia when a name is consistently mis-spelled. Dyslexia could be a factor. Any name with several common spellings is going to be a problem. I wish Brian had persuaded Siobhan to settle for Rory.

My first name and surname are extremely common and have no other spellings and I've still frequently had them both mis-spelled. The surname is mispronounced all the time. My maiden name was a Scottish surname and less common. Not many people managed both to spell it and pronounce it right at the first attempt. That's life.

I guess so, but you'd expect their accents to match more.

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/02/2026 15:38

The shortened form of my name that I use all the time could end in an ie or a y. I use the y but lots of people use the ie. I don't take it personally but it causes a problem if they spell it that way in my email address.

Ruairi has more vowels together than most English speaking people are used to. It's a genuine mistake and how would you know the right way anyway unless you see it in the Radio Times cast list?

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/02/2026 15:39

My sister doesn't have the same accent as me.

BeatriceBatchelor · 19/02/2026 15:42

*It matters because it looks like it might be being misspelt because it isn't a standard "English" name. Even if you don't intend it to be, it could be interpreted as xenophobic.

Oh do give over 😂

And welcome back @Bruisername !

FatRosie · 19/02/2026 16:04

Bit of a leap to go straight to xenophobia when a name is consistently mis-spelled.
Not when the name is from a minority language.

My first name and surname are both unusual and get misspelt regularly.
One of them is very similar to a common British surname so is often spelt that way and it doesn't bother me if they get it wrong - it's fairly easy to correct if it matters. The other one is more complicated. The misspellings vary from what looks like a straightforward typo to downright weird. Administratively, it can be a nightmare.

I've had comments said to my face that could not be taken as anything other than bigotry. One example is a colleague repeatedly making spitting and phlegm-clearing noises when saying my name. There was no reason for it as I use a different known as name professionally but the full version was on my security badge. It is not the only time it's happened. It's laughed off as banter by them.

As for dyslexia, I don't know much about it. I can think about 5 people who are dyslexic and they are very obviously dyslexic.
We're not talking 'DD's not very good at spelling, I think she's a bit dyslexic' level.

My typing is pretty rubbish and often mistype words that the spellchecker doesn't correct. I check that I've spelt Ruairi correctly just like I try to check that I've spelt Lilian or Tracy correctly. (I probably don't get them right very often)

It matters because it looks like it might be being misspelt because it isn't a standard "English" name. Even if you don't intend it to be, it could be interpreted as xenophobic.
Oh do give over

Am I not allowed to have an opinion?

My sister doesn't have the same accent as me.

My accent is quite different to my sisters' but our voices are very alike.
I don't have any brothers.
My mother's accent is different but our voices are alike.

My mother's handwriting and mine are very similar, but my siblings' aren't.

FatRosie · 19/02/2026 16:11

ExitPursuedByABare · 19/02/2026 16:06

Can we give it a rest?

Of course.

Not sure why
"Not picking you up on it particularly because I appreciate some people just don't 'get' names, but in general it does come across as 'can't be arsed because it is Irish'."
caused a pile up.

I’m thinking that the difficult one to spell could be given a good nickname. I can’t think of any that aren’t rude atm but I’m sure someone can come up with a good one

he’s basically the Shein Brian

FatRosie · 19/02/2026 16:24

he’s basically the Shein Brian - Brilliant!

He is Baspofald.

Bruisername · 19/02/2026 16:25

Ha ha! I had to google that

WombatCowgirl · 19/02/2026 16:59

Ooh I've just thought of a parallel parable Brian is remastering: the prodigal son (murderous gigolo) has squandered his inheritance and is earning husks with the swine, the taken for granted son (devoted dad and farm labourer )will be providing the fatted pizza against his return!

FatRosie · 19/02/2026 17:07

It will be a fatted fawn.

WitcheryDivine · 19/02/2026 18:47

I think we’re supposed to assume that Zach (I missed what his job is but you all said finance) is feeling that Stella will get a poor deal from marrying a multimillion pound farm due to one day having to pay tax on it. Eh? Maybe he’s going to try to sell them some dodgy tax avoidance scheme, I presume that’s what Keri meant with his extremely natural and subtle script last night.

Or he’s implying that his and Stella’s family are absolutely minted and her personal property is worth a lot more than Brookfield, which I just don’t think can be the case as she’s said about not having her own farm (or I presume money to buy one) before.

He should have stuck to plumbing for so many reasons. Now he's just turning into Frank Spencer.
