Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you think 19 is an ideal age to have a baby with a convict, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

Emma spoke sense to George and Amber tonight. Goodness only knows where this storyline is going. I can't see George being Father of the Year. Oh dear.

Over to you!

He already tried to pitch that idea to Amber and she was having none of it. God knows why as doesn't seem like she has anything to keep her there either (except Brad).

DadDadDad · 28/01/2026 13:05

Except, @BrightYellowDaffodil , George appears to also be falling out with his family too - Eddie is still not speaking to him, I believe, and even Emma sounds like she's reaching the end of what she is prepared to do for him.

Well yes, but I still can't see George having the gumption to leave. Although maybe the plotline is going to be him slowly falling out with/being ostracised by everyone around him, at which point he'll decide there's nothing left for him in Ambridge.

TheUsualChaos · 28/01/2026 13:14

I wonder if the SW plan for this to be the turning point for George. Getting a job he can do well in and be confident with, the family all come round to the idea of the baby and support them (hopefully not just Emma doing all the childcare), Amber and George turn out to be devoted parents. The wedding goes ahead next year with baby Grundy as a mini flower girl/page boy. They manage to afford to find their own place to rent in Ambridge, I'm sure somewhere will be going spare. All is well.

Until Amber is pregnant with baby number two and Brad is the father.

SlenderRations · 28/01/2026 14:21

I find the the idea of a baby that was accidentally conceived to a young not really quite a couple who have both not yet launched on adult life, have no home or income or stable relationship should be the “making” of the father actually quite repugnant.

I realise that Neil and Susan want a way back, but to gush that G and A will be great parents is so irresponsible - they have already failed on the basic requirements. It is all very unfair on Emma.

Whilst its rarely the making of the father, it's so often the un-making of the mother who's left as a single parent, desperately chasing child maintenance (which never materialises) and wishing she'd made very different choices.

The baby was not accidentally conceived. They decided to try for a baby, it just happened very quickly.

I wonder why Amber didn't stay on in education. She comes from an affluent home, so money was probably not a barrier.

My friend's son met a girl at a festival and she was pregnant within 3 months. My friend was mortified but they have two grown up children now and are still married. It can happen.

Is there a degree in Influencer Studies? If not, there's your answer!

This meal to heal passing plates etc stuff, reminds me of when Im at my sister in laws, they have an enormous dining table and I can't reach the food unless I stand up and lean over everything. So when I ask my husband can you reach this for me he usually gets a little tiny bit peeved with me as he wants to eat his food. So I don't think passing plates etc is healing.🤣🤣🤣
Before anyone says LTB, my DH is lovely but I think he wishes I had longer arms.

Perhaps Amber and George will get on so well with Esme , if she hires him, that they might move in with her.
Sorry I put Sen instead of Zen and Home farm, earlier post, I get the farms mixed up as I have only been listening to TA about 7 years and not taking in Farm names.

Sidebeforeself · 28/01/2026 17:25

@Nos4r2 That wouldnt work for me either, being big of boob.

BeatriceBatchelor · 28/01/2026 18:08

Welcome back Dad3

Language evolves though, doesn't it, so writing to the manor born is fine because we all know what is meant. It's not a typo or malapropism.

Ruth was mean tonight but she often is.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/01/2026 19:32

DadDadDad
just so he's not constantly butting up against people who hate him and getting provoked to lash out in response.

Or butting up against people who love him, like Ed, and lashing out physically just because, well, because he's George really. I would be a little worried by that if I were Esme and knew about it. Doing George a favour doesn't necessarily turn out well.

I don't think that moving away from Ambridge will magically make him better able to cope with people. Not people who hate him, not people who love him, just people he has to spend any time with if he happens not to feel like it at the time.

muddyford · 28/01/2026 20:01

Another poor episode. Has Azra never heard of professional boundaries? And I am amazed that neither she nor Susan wondered what had caused George's funny turn.

AnneWhittle · 28/01/2026 20:08

yes, something must have caused it!

Gonners · 28/01/2026 20:19

Panic attack at the prospect of being a deadbeat father?

echt · 28/01/2026 20:44

Mick's very obvious prevarication about New Year's Eve and "We had a smashing time after The Bull"....

Are we to think he clouted George? If so, he's implicated Joy.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 28/01/2026 20:46

Or he didn't want to say they went home and had mind-blowing sex....

Ambridge · 28/01/2026 11:08

Also pleased to see @DadDadDad resurfacing, even if only briefly.

There's currently a positive rash of novels swamping my kindle suggestions all based around 'The Little Cake-Shop in Pyongyang' or ‘Comfort Food in the Shinagawa Bake-Shop' or similar (repeat ad nauseam, with variations on the Japanese/Korean theme). Akram's plumber ➡️ Zen Master shift is giving me horribly strong vibes in that direction, finally cemented by the Meal to Heal. 🤮, is all I can say.

(I haven’t read any of those books, I hasten to add)

He's like ambridge's answer to chatgpt 'you must provide foods that cater to the tastes of both parties'

echt · 28/01/2026 20:54

I'd like it to be Mick, as his overweening concern about Emma's suitability for I forgot what role was OTT and marked him as a beady-eyed, sanctimonious git. Can you tell I don't like the character?

Just to add, the scene following Mick's account of NYE had George's funny spell. Just the SWs way of telling us thick listeners that He'd Got Bottled On NYE And To Join The Dots.

I thought that was heavily hinted at.

Doesn't The Bull serve real ale? There seems to be plenty of changing of barrels.
