Thank you, @PseudoBadger, for kicking off this long, long series of Archers threads.

Archers All views on The Archers welcome here! New blood welcomed, and of course we are always delighted to welcome back former or occasional listeners/posters. We don't all agree on all points, although we do mostly try to be civil about it. Most of us are posting tongue in cheek a lot of the time, so don't worry about revealing that you'd love to spend time with Martyn Gibson, or other unusual views. Grin

Archers Spoilers: not on this thread, please! We don't wait for the omnibus to discuss the weeknight episodes, but we do try our best to avoid cross-contamination from https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/radio_addicts/4636789-the-archers-spoilers-thread-7-cant-wait-for-702pm-join-us-here, where spoilers are positively welcomed!

Archers For newer listeners, lurkers or those who just have no idea what we're talking about, @DadDadDad has created this useful thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/radio_addicts/3557323-For-Archers-fans-a-guide-to-acronyms-on-the-long-running-discussion-threads-and-any-other-meta-thread-questions-you-may-have - BOOP point for him! (See thread for explanation.)

In some haste as we are going out for the day. I was asked weeks ago to put I've Killed the Vicar in as the new title but I agree with more recent comments that Peggy's funeral feels like old news now. Great line, though. Sorry not to have used Markie Malarkey, though. I've settled on something that will only make sense to people who were also youngish in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Here's a clue. If a certain person appears in tomorrow's episode the title will be relevant.

Over to you!

Patrick Troughton (second Doctor Who) had two actor sons, David and Michael.

David Troughton is Tony Archer.

David has two actor sons, Sam and William. William is Tom Archer.

Patrick had a daughter, Joanna, and her son Harry Melling is also now a successful actor. He played Dudley Dursley in the Harry Potter films but seems to have made the transition to being a good actor as an adult, which not many child actors do. He was in Wolf Hall. It might be a step too far if he turned up in TA too. I raised both eyebrows when William Troughton was cast not long after his father. To be fair, he's doing a very good job as Tom, but really? The best actor to play David Troughton's Archer son was his own son?

(Yes, I did google. Patrick made an absolute pig's ear of his private life, from the sound of it. )

David Troughton is Tony Archer.

Mind blown! Shock

Thank you @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g . I'm surprised there are only two actor sons, I thought there were at least four. They must have had a lot of work and managed to look slightly different to confuse me so Grin

Buxusmortus · 04/08/2025 13:10

Talking of the actors, I watched the drama Unforgiveable ( horrible subject, excellent acting) and was a bit disconcerted to hear Kirsty's voice coming out of the actor playing a GP. I always forget that Archers actors may do other work alongside TA.

Will is Mike Tucker's RL son, and IRL Justin and Miranda are married, Ruth's partner is Matt Crawford, and Brian and Shula are married.

I watch a couple of soap operas, and in one a mother and daughter act mother and daughter, and in another one woman is in a RL relationship with her screen ex-husband's screen son, and her RL daughter plays her screen ex-partner's daughter.

JanetheObscure · 04/08/2025 14:41

Ruth's real-life partner is Matt Crawford? I had no idea and somehow my mind is blown.

CrashThere · 04/08/2025 15:06

It's not a connection I would have made either. I think I read it on here.
Keri Davies's son used to play Fat Dan decades ago.
And Tracey Horrobin now, used to be Kate Aldridge. The in-between Kate went to run a pub in Walford, and Gavin and Harrison are having an affair in Corrie.
Kirsty's mother was a traffic warden in Brookside, and the woman who bought Bartleby was married to a drug dealer in Brookside and worked behind the bar in the Rovers .
Nigel and Lizzie were in Crossroads.

NebulousSadTimes · 04/08/2025 16:11

There's my mind blown again, I didn't realise Todd from Corrie was in TA. I wonder if that's how the Harrison actor got the gig in Corrie. Poor Fallon, although I'm getting the impression things are cooling off a bit so maybe she'll be relieved.

Was Lizzie not married to Alan Turner in Emmerdale? Or maybe she was his daughter.

I googled Tracy Horrobin, she looks nothing like I imagined her.

I missed Kirsty's voice in Unforgivable @Buxusmortus , well heard.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 04/08/2025 16:18

This has utterly frazzled my brain.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g Completely irrelevant but Guess the soap | Mumsnet

ExitPursuedByABare · 04/08/2025 18:29

Todd was in TA?????

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 04/08/2025 19:24

There is absolutely no way Archers residents would be queuing for The Shoppe At the Village Hall for their emergency supplies - they’d be ordering from their local supermarket via Deliveroo - like sensible people.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 04/08/2025 19:29

I would put money on Ruth being entirely happy to stab Brian in the back, just as Stella is and has been before. Ruth was the one who supported Kate about selling Home Farm house, as I recall. And she has had it in for Brian for a very long time, going back to her student days.

Gonners · 04/08/2025 21:03

This evening I mainly enjoyed Kate's bizarre attempt to bully Jakob into moving in with Kirsty - something neither of them wanted - being thwarted by Chris's absolute lack of interest in living next-door to Alice.

TottersBlanklyIntoThePhysicGarden · 04/08/2025 21:14

Niiiiiiiiiice!

That is one of the greatest posts evah. Thank you.

Abra1t · 04/08/2025 22:02

I feel as if I’m on something psychedelic reading these real-life relationship posts.

JudyCoolibar · 04/08/2025 22:54

So Chris turns out to be illiterate. Who knew?

CrashThere · 04/08/2025 23:07

Nigel Pargetter was a headteacher in Brookside, and I once saw a Pebble Mill play where Elizabeth and David were romantically involved. That was a bit 'Yeuurgh!'. I think a narrowboat featured in it. They are brother and sister!

Leonard has turned up in many, many places. Egg's dad in This Life and lots of other things.

Horrible cricket man was in Harry Potter and Heartbeat, and Michael Troughton, Tony Archer's RL brother was in The New Statesman.

Eastie77Returns · 04/08/2025 23:18

Tim Bentinck seems to have led a very interesting life.

On a seperate note, this evening was the first time I’ve heard David refer to Brian as family. The two branches of the Archers never seem to acknowledge they are related (I know Brian isn’t actually an Archer).

CrashThere · 04/08/2025 23:26

His grace the 12th Earl of Portland.

Back in prehistoric times (1977) Tony Archer and the sainted Oliver Sterling were fellow-WW1 pilots in a BBC TV series called 'Wings', about the Royal Flying Corps, so they certainly go back a long way.

CrashThere · 04/08/2025 23:50

Crikey! Anthony Andrews was in that, and he's almost my mother's age. He was also in Upstairs Downstairs, as was Justin Elliott, who played James Bellamy, but not the one who is Lillian Bellamy's son James.
😕

RegimentalSturgeon · 05/08/2025 00:20

Don’t judge: there’s really not a lot of room to turn round on one of those.

MinnieBaldock · 05/08/2025 06:40

The Leonard actor has been in loads of stuff always a northener. Last time I saw him he was in All Creatures Great and Small as a man who had fleas. Im watching the whole ACGAS 1978- 1990 on season 3 just before Linda Bellingham takes over the Helen role. I love it, it is so dated and they treat women really as second class characters but I still really enjoy it and love Thomas Hardy as Sigfried Farnon, but I also love Sam West as Sigfried in the newer version. Lots of farms and farm animals in that. It's hard to believe that I was 23 when the first ACGAS was shown ( bit depressing really).

MinnieBaldock · 05/08/2025 06:43

Sorry I meant Robert Hardy not the writer Thomas.🫣
